YOUR VOICE MUSIC REVIEW ON WALK THE MOON By Whitney Delaney

Summer is always a great time for new music, and Walk the Moons
self-titled album was my summer favorite.

After I heard Anna Sun, I was hooked on Walk the Moons fresh
indie rock sound, and the rest of the album is equally addicting. Energetic vocals combined with a lively rhythm make this album shine.
The bands style is fun to dance and sing to but mellow enough to
play as background music.

Each song has its own uniqueness; however, the album flows
smoothly from the fun flirty beat of Quesadilla and concludes with
a more laid-back song called I Can Lift a Car. I applaud bands
when their sound is more upbeat but they can also compose
slower, heartfelt music as well. Walk the Moon does this with Iscariot.

Instruments are used sparingly, letting vocals convey all the beauty
in this song. One of my favorites, Jenny, has more of a dance beat
integrated into the bands signature sound making it really fun to listen to. I highly recommend listening to this great album and adding
Walk the Moon to Spotify playlists, ipods, and for the old-fashioned
at heart, maybe a mix CD or two.

YOUR VOICE NO PLANS... NO PROBLEM

You ever have one of those spur-of-the-moment events in your life whereas you just decide to wing it and go? Thats exactly what
my friend Patrick and I decided to in early
August. Well, not exactly; we knew were destined for a Saturday night Coldplay concert in
downtown St. Paul, but thats about it.

I stayed at his place Friday night while we

spent all night trying to bargain with folks
over Craigs List for ideal tickets. Problem is,
both of us can be fairly indecisive and even
just miles outside of Minneapolis, we were
still vying for tickets until we just decided
lets just wing it. We put hundreds of miles
and an entire weekend in jeopardy in hopes
that the Coldplay show, one of the most popular in the world, was in fact not sold out.

But this only marked a taste of things to

come. While we got in the show (way up in
the rafters along with several other procrastinators), other important decisions were soon
to follow: where do we stay for the evening?
What do we do on Sunday?
So after the concert, we must have spent an
hour and a half of calling various hotels in

Minneapolis and St. Paul to no avail. Finally,

I ran into an extremely convenient Orbitz app
on my phone, and was able to book the Millennium hotel in downtown Minneapolis. Alright!

Problem was, when we got there, the upfront service manager (who was fanastic the
whole night through) notified us that our hotel
was booked for 12AM Sunday to Monday. I
sure hope at least a few readers sympathize
with me on this because after all, I booked it
at 11:48PM Saturday. Oh, and the manager
also kindly let us know that virtually every
hotel in a five mile radius were booked as
well.

So for the next three hours were spent arguing, philosophizing and debating about
what to do with our miserable lives. Finally,
after pizza and conversation at 3am with the
parking ramp attendant from Congo named
Jean Claude (who also interestingly enough
shared our views on the world), one individual who reserved hotel rooms DID NOT
show up, they gave us the room at Millenium
Hotel, which we finally parked for the night at
4AM.

I also would like to mention, we had my car

parked in the loading/unloading zone at the
hotel for four hours; but they didnt seem to
mind. Besides, the most important thing was
to get save $2.00 off by parking in their ramp
at the discounted times- which began at
4.A.M.

It was all worth it though- a Twins game the

next day and having pizza outside the parking ramp at 3.A.M. with the dude from Congo
made it all worth it in the end.

GRAND
FORKS:
THIS
IS
OUR
LAND
YOUR VOICE
If youre like me (a naive, Dreamer/Romanticist), you do believe you can change the world. Problem is, you get older and grow up, that is,
until somebody invents the time machine. We all heard the saying, be the change you want to see in the world and of course, that couldnt be more truer. The issue is that society has so many creative ways of keeping you chained to that new black leather loveseat with
speakers you bought from Best Buy (or K-Mart).

Televison, in many ways, is sort of a new prison, Its a world a fiction that hooks all of us, causes us to be emotionally attached to stories
that never actually happened and characters who we develop artificial friendships with. Im guilty as much as anyone on this one, however; I do love the show House, M.D.and found myself emotionally bonding with the characters.

But my question is, for this generation growing up nowadays and those in school, where do we head from here? Do we still have ambition
and a drive for life?A determination to achieve goals and live the dreams? Surely, this has been my philosophy most of my life. To chase
dreams, and than live them. Most importantly though, is whether or not they benefit the lives of others and go beyond self-servitude.

Grand Forks is our land for better or worse. You might love this town, but if you dont, how do you think GF can improve? And if, you do
believe that Grand Forks can improve, why dont you be the agent for change?

I dont care what your story is, you have unlimited potential as a human being. And there are vehicles to help you achieve those Dreams
as well as making a difference in the lives of others. One such vehicle is Grand Forks Young Professionals. They are a group of individuals dedicated to bettering Grand Forks through a variety of means- community involvement, the arts and more. By joining one of their
many committees (such as Marketing and Community Involvement of which Im members of both), you can both walk towards your own
dreams as well as improve our land.

One of their latest projects is GF VOTE, which is self-explanitory. They are leading the trend away from apathy and towards well, community involvement.

You might find it a bit ironic, being After5 is primarily an entertainment and events magazine, that Im being critical of entertainment. But
the truth is, Im all for it; I just would like to see more people decide to be the change they want to see in the world as well. In short, we
constantly recieve information through images, messages, sensuality and the like. It is time to hit the send button with messages that
make an impact.
Check out the Grand Forks Young Professionals and find out how you can make a difference today at www.ggfyp.org

LESS TACO... ONE LESS BUFFALO WING

FOOD ONE
By Mike Peterson, Editor

May in Grand Forks should go down in the history books as the end of an era. An era, which involved the invention of a new type of projectile (the Taco Bell sauce packet which would splatter on impact) and the discovery of my own faith (true story; more in a bit). Taco Bell on
32nd Avenue has closed and it appears Buffalo Wild Wings on Columbia has shut down as well, evidenced by the lack of signage.
Ive worked at Taco Bell in my high school years back in the day. Every year they said they were going to remodel the thing, but that never
came and I guess, now we know why apparently. It always was stuck in the 1990s, which in its own way was kind of cool itself. The pink and
purple plastic seats and the ugly orange tiles in the back were a flashback to childhood and memories of the ever-immortalized Taco Bell dog
reigned supreme. I was always up front as cashier and I enjoyed it very much because you met so many kinds of interesting people; I didnt
just take peoples orders; I made it an experience worthy of its own primetime reality show (move over, Real World- this is Real Tacos). I wore
the name Rudy on my nickname as it was what everybody called me from high school football (dont laugh). Every weekend through the
5pm to 3am shifts, students from UND would come in, already wasted and would just order an uncomprehensible amount of food, slam
down Mountain Dews and chant RUDY, RUDY, RUDY while I mop up their pop spills. Really. So Im going to miss that place, so many memories. They ought to make it into a fast food museum. Add that to my bucket list.
Buffalo Wild Wings, as I mentioned, has also appeared to have closed. Thats so horrible, whos behind shutting down the two most hip
restaurants in Grand Forks during the same month? I blame the government. But anyways, as a die-hard Steelers fan, this served as my replace ment to the closing of Players (those of you who werent born in the 90s know what Im talking about!). Every Sunday, me and my
good friend Shannon, who was my fifth grade teacher) would load up on wings and enjoy the Steelers destroy teams with its nasty defenses
and irritate the rest of the NFL because they... hit too hard for their own good. But the reason Im sad BWW shut down is because I literally
discovered my faith here. Just happened to be the most ideal place to discuss theology. I mean beer, football and theology; only natural.
If you would like to weep with me over the loss of the 1990s Taco Bell
time-capsule and Buffalo Wild Wings, send me a letter at
After5GF@gmail.com and well post the funniest memories in next
months issue.

2012 is here and one might be able to theorize that, while the rest of the country goes
in its own crazy direction, were sitting pretty
good here in Grand Forks, although it seems
as if Fargo gets first dibs on alot of things. A
few examples, Fargo was the first to get its
own exclusive national events center in the
Fargodome. Also, the NDSU Buffal-er, Bison
were the first to go NCAA Division 1-AA, or
whatever they call it now.
But thats not true anymore. The fantastic
food establishments (among other institutions)of Fargo had come to our town to make
themselves a home. Having lived in Fargo for
a year, I always wished they would come
here anyways. Perhaps Im kind of a nerd in
that way. The moment I found out Pizza
Ranch was staking a flag here, I swear my
eyes watered a tad bit, for a few reasons:one)
I love buffets, two) I love pizza and three)I
love their dessert pizza.
I lost track of all the new restuants coming
to town but we should make them feel welcome in our community anyways, because
its the only way were going to pull in Dave
& Busters and HuHot Mongolian Gril.. But I
will salute those whom I remember and who
has food and goodies in the A+ column.
Five Guys Burgers and Fries. I have never
seen so many potato bags in 500 square feet
or less(note, not actual size of resturaunt). I
remember before that place opened up, thats
all there was. But seriously, their burgers are
huge, juicy and full of energy. Delicious,
none the less and worthy of your federal reserve notes.
Cherry Berry. Ah, Fargos super-sensation
has made it north. Self-serve yogurt bars all
the rage and I was there on their grand-opening when they had free yogurt the entire day.
Unfortunately for me, I was not educated in
cooking or did not have the expertise as to
how to put together a fine piece of dessert because I dumped virtually every ingredient on
my yogurt. Chocolate, passion-fruit, kiwis...
yeah. I was like a kid in a candy shop and just
couldnt keep my hands to myself. I guess
thats exactly what it was. Next time around
wasnt so bad. All the goodies are there, and
Im sure if you spend a few hours prior to
showing up you really could put together a
mean dessert worthy of exposure on The
Food Network.

A Christmas Wish List

for Grand Forks

by Mike Peterson

ormally, I love to discuss relationships and bring awareness

to the reality of abusive situations but I would like to be
one step ahead of Ol Man Winter and and get
on the snowflakes and mistletoes before he
does.
So! Id like to bring up some thoughts Ive
always had on what would make Grand Forks
a better town and a cooler place to live, especially for our youth.
This article is twenty-six years in the making, and a lot more if you add up every moment of my ancestors and parents lives to get

me to this point :D. At this stage, I would like

you to simulate a drum-roll in your head. No?
Fine. Ill start. I do hope Mr. Mayor and the
good ol folks at City Hall might take a look.
Grand Forks has too much of: bars, drinking, banks, and auto dealerships. Ive always
felt this town has been weak on serious recreation and after-school activities for our youth,
albeit were getting there and Id like to highlight our towns progress in that avenue.
Weve definitely started to get some real
options in the past five years or so, beginning
with a real water park at the Canad Inns. I
mean, no ones ever experienced what its
like to get flushed down a toilet until they
came along, so cheers!
We got a super recreation and fitness center coming here in the Choice Wellness Fitness Center and word is they will have their
own water park. Fantastic! But put in a request for speed-slides that are so vertical they
are literally perpendicular to the ground. And
add a seven-foot wave pool too, those things
are fun. I once rescued a snapping turtle from
the wave pool in Sioux Falls. True story.
And of course, the current Center Court
Fitness building will become the Northern

Air Family Entertainment Center. Could not

be more excited. Theres going to be laser-tag
and, from what I hear, paintball as well.
Score. What I would really like to see though,
and I feel strongly about considering this is
truly a hockey town, is year-round/fullfledged competitive roller hockey. No, the
summer stuff at Blue Line Club doesnt
count. We need to get hardcore with the sport.
I havent a clue how to skate on ice, but I can
sure play inline hockey. Its big on the east
coast, Minneapolis has it but for some reason
North Dakota has virtually nothing to offer
of the sport. I can see sponsors (perhaps
Scheels?) tagging on and endorsing the sport
as well. If the folks at Northern Air can provide that, I will hand them a $500 check. Tomorrow.
We also need some local millionare to step
forward and start a semi-pro football team in
town. Grand Forks is growing thanks to Olive
Garden and we have to give all the construction folks something to do other than smashing concrete and give the skinny guys who
work in office settings something real to daydream about. I mean, the women have their
rock-em, sock-em roller derby, right?

t was a warm summer day as the little

girl went out to play. The little girl
was about eight years of age. She had
long red hair that was wavy and always messy. She was known for getting into
trouble, as well as having her little sister imitate her on everything she did. Her father
knew this so he warned her to stay away from
the old well, as well as to not wander far. He
told her there was a storm coming and there
was suppose to be heavy rain and he didnt
want her getting soaked. She only smiled at
her father and then ran out the door. She
played in the fields and wandered far away
from the house. She wandered over to the
well that she was suppose to stay away from,
for it was her favorite place to play.
The old well had been dried up for years.

All that was in the well was dirt and stone lining the bottom. Her father had put boards covering the top so that nothing could get in. It
was so they didnt have stray animals falling
in and rotting causing a putrid smell. But the
boards had become weak and brittle from the
passing of time. The boards were green with
mold and moss growing free.
This gave the little girl a thrill to play on
the boards. She could hear them squeaking
and crack under her feet. It only made her
want to play around the well even more. She
hoped she would see a ghost, thinking that if
she danced on the boards enough they would
show up and take her away with them.
As she stepped on to the boards they bent
a little more than usual this time. The little girl
ignored it as she listened to the rumble of

thunder in the distance. The lighting lit up the

sky like her flash light in the night. It made
her feel like a baby to be thinking about a
night light. In order to get the thought out of
her head she walked back and forth on the
boards even more. Stepping out further onto
the boards, one foot in front of the other; getting closer and closer to the center.
The boards finally snapped and let the girl
fall into the dark well. She hit the bottom on
the well breaking her leg on one of the rocks.
Blood ran down her leg as she looked around
at her new surroundings. It was dark and cold
down there. The rumbling of thunder grew
louder and echoed against the stone walls of
the well. She covered her ears to drowned out
the noise, but it didnt help.
Her screams for help and tears of sadness
could not be heard out of her stony prison.
Tears rolled down her face as the rain began
to fall. The combination of her tears and the
rain started to fill the well. Water kept rising
up and up consuming the little girl at the bottom of the well.

Lastly, as has been a dream since childhood, we need a multi-level go kart complex,
complete with competitive leagues. Otherwise all of us guys are sitting on the couch
watching NASCAR all day. At least this way
we could get a real chance at growing our
own Dale Earnhardt mustaches and catch
draft.
So, this is a calling for all the millionares
and billionares of Grand Forks to get together
and help Grand Forks grow for real. I know
all of you have been vilified lately by protestors, the media and democrats so this is your
chance to prove youre worth to society. Im
pretty sure if you granted all the wishes mentioned here that the entire Occupy Wall Street
force would go away.
Finally, I want to say that, although it feels
like summer wasnt too long ago and lake
season still exists, that I do not feel sorry for
jumping the gun on Christmas and Winter
because one of my friends brags about his
snowmobile year-round and is constantly
praying for pounds of snow to dump on us
and for the nasty blizzards that follow suit.
So Merry Christmas.

She was not able to swim with her broken

leg. She drowned in the rain and her tears. Her
body floated up to the top of the well once the
storm had passed. Her father found her floating in the well. He was so heartbroken by the
death that he fished her out of the well. The
body lay lifeless in his arms dripping wet. He
looked back at her little sister and showed her,
her older sister in his arms. The youngest
daughter didnt move. She only looked at her
sisters body not really sure what had happened. Her father turned away from the
younger sister with only his back facing her.
He laid her body on the ground and tied a
rope around her waist; attaching a rock to the
other end. Once secured he placed both the
rock and his daughters body back into the
well. She sank back down to the bottom
where she shall remain forever. The father resealed the well with new boards. The
youngest daughter watched as her father
sealed up the well yet again. He hoped that
she would not make the same mistake that her
sister made.

commercials where they build a third of a full

sentence on one screen, then add onto it
word-by-word from there is downright confusing and way too fast. Even children cartoons like SpongeBob SquarePants have
plots that make you feel like youve been
drinking the past five hours and dont have a
clue to whats actually going on. Everythings
got to be faster, and instant. Forget comprehending, just give me the product now and
Ill figure it out later.
Despite my passionate pleas for the world
to slow down; I know it wont. However, we
as people can. And it couldnt ring truer in
my ears in regards to relationships. I long to
see a day where relationships return to the
old-school, classical version. Because what
we see today is a version so warped and so
disoriented from the real thing.
Yes, dating today consists of, well, several
aspects, but one of them being going online

and clicking hot or not based on the subjects photograph. And of course our warped
culture and media endorses superficiality and
ultra sexually-charged themes 24/7. No wonder why we see so much abuse today, so
much rape and so much neglect. People just
dont get it, and our culture trains them not
to.
Im calling for guys to return to something
called chivalry. This is a word that is both
very special to me and holds a tremendous
amount of mystique attached to it. In relationships it means to be the honorable man and
truly and totally respect your loved one. The
beginning paragraph on Wikipedia about the
word reads this:
Chivalry is a term related to the medieval
(Middle Ages) institution of knighthood
which has an aristocratic military origin of individual training and service to others.
Chivalry was also the term used to refer to

a group of mounted men-at-arms as well as

to martial valour. It is often associated with
ideals of knightly virtues, honor and courtly
love: "the source of the chivalrous idea," remarked Johan Huizinga, who devoted several
chapters of The Waning of the Middle Ages
to chivalry and its effects on the medieval
character, "is pride aspiring to beauty, and
formalized pride gives rise to a conception of
honour, which is the pole of noble life."
Thats what its all about, right there.
Todays version of romance is much like
high-fructose corn syrup and pretty much all
the toxic foods we eat today that were genetically modified in some soulless, white laboratory. This is a call to return to the real deal,
and a call for men to be chivalrous once
again. God loves you and so do I.

E
Who turned on the TV?
I

verything seems so warped, fast

and confusing today. I cant
even understand commercials
on television anymore. Perhaps
its just me getting old (Im only 26 by the
way) and finally beginning to be on the losing
end of a generational gap. But seriously those

always thought I would kind of like

to see a ghost. That is until what I
thought was a ghost took a bottle of
contact lens solution and placed it on
the bathroom sink for me to find. After
spending several minutes looking for my
bottle of Bausch and Lomb Contact Solution,
the bottle was no where to be found, and I
jokingly asked the ghost that lived with my
family (or so we thought) to kindly return the
bottle of saline at his convenience.
Wearing my glasses instead of my contacts, I returned to my bedroom and finished
getting dressed for the day. It took maybe
two minutes to finish putting the rest of my
clothes on. I then returned to the bathroom
for a reason I dont remember now, only to
find the bottle of saline staring at me from
the top of the bathroom sink.
In my mind, the ghost had heard my request and was kind enough to leave the bottle
right where I could not miss looking. The
horror I felt was so intense and so real I can
vividly remember losing my breath and
quickly ran down the stairs to the living
room to where my mom was. It was shear
panic and fear.
THE GHOST PUT THE BOTTLE OF
SALINE OUT! THE GHOST PUT THE
BOTTLE OF SALINE OUT! I was mumbling and talking and jabbering and scared to
death. My mom, flabbergasted at my behavior, laughed out loud and told me that she
found the saline and put it on the sink for me
to find.
A great wave of relief passed over my
body. I calmed down and regained my
senses. All my life growing up I had been
interested in all things paranormal and I
thought it would be cool to see a ghost one
day. I can tell you, the day that bottle of
saline was delivered to me by a ghost had

October 2011

me terrified to no end. Or so I thought.

The truth is, there was a reason myself
and others in my household spoke out to the
thin air on occasion. We really did believe
the house we lived in was haunted, but it
wasnt because ghosts were taking bottles of
saline and hiding them. It was, in fact, for
the very definitive sound of loud footsteps
and bangs that would come from unoccupied
rooms; it was for the sound of heavy footsteps slowly plodding up stairs where no one
was walking; TVs would suddenly turn off
and on; voices could be heard whispering in
the basement; people would get a strange
feeling like they were being watched -- all
these things combined make for interesting
living, especially while growing up a
teenager that spent much time alone in the
dwelling.
Looking back, I dont feel like me or my
family was in any danger. Being a fan of
shows like Ghost Hunters and Ghost Adventures have reassured me that most ghosts (if
you believe in that sort of thing) are just people who were alive at one point and now
have failed to move on. There is nothing terribly disturbing about banging, knocking, or
footsteps when it comes down to it, but the
idea of something unknown causing such
phenomena can be quite unsettling. There is
a sense that your personal and private space
is being invaded by an unwanted guest, and
I can liken it to a feeling of being violated in
some ways. Much like the family that comes
home and finds their home in disarray because it has been ransacked in a burglary,
much the same is the feeling that some
creepy dead person may be the culprit who
has been hiding your socks or drinking your
beer (not that ghosts can drink beer, but
havent you ever opened your fridge expecting to pop cold a one only to find its gone?

You swear up and down there was one beer

in there when you opened the fridge this
morning! More than likely, common sense
dictates your roommate or spouse drank it,
but what if you had no roommate or no
spouse?)
The banging was always scary to hear and
the footsteps, too, but one particular moment
occurred that still lives with me and creeps
me out to this day. Not that it was much of
anything, I guess (I never did see anything
that looked like an apparition in the traditional sense) but it was enough to weird me
out to this day. The story, as it goes, is told
from my mothers point of view, and she related it to me when I was much older. During the summer of 1986, she was awoken to
the sound of my TV blaring from my room.
It was on and it was loud enough to wake her
up from a dead sleep and it was disturbing
her enough that she felt she needed to go and
check on me (or at least tell me to turn the
damn TV volume down). When she opened
my door, I was sleeping soundly (almost unconscious) on my stomach. The television,
not even ten feet away from my bed, was
blasting white noise at full volume on a
channel that was playing nothing but white
snow. Walking into my room, she checked
on me briefly, made sure I was asleep, and
turned the knob off to the television. The TV
went dark, all was quiet, and she went back
to bed. To my dismay, which I discovered
later, the TV was unplugged.
Two things bother me about that
story. The TV was unplugged, which to this
day makes the hair stand up on my arms just
thinking about it, and the fact that I was
oblivious to what was taking place in my
room. The reason, I surmise, this has always
stuck in my head, had something to do with
Ronald Defeo, who on November 13, 1974,

went through his home at 112 Ocean Avenue

in Amityville, NY, with a .35 caliber rifle and
murdered his family. The end circumstances
eventually culminated in a book by author
Jay Anson called The Amityville Horror.
Descriptions of the crime scene indicated the
victims were in their beds, all on their stomachs, and none had been awakened by the
sound of a .35 caliber rifle being fired multiple times. Coincidence? Yes, but it always
sticks out in my mind that maybe some
creepy spook had subdued me in ordered to
blast the volume on my unplugged television.
We didnt live in the home much
longer after that and when we moved away,
thank goodness, nothing followed us (as it is
my understanding sometimes spooks follow
you). No one was ever hurt, but we were
weirded-out quite often and it always made
for good conversation. Please note, this is
just one of my experiences with the paranormal, as there were several others that happened in our home that I have failed to
mention. The house is still there (I drive by
it occasionally) and I always wonder if the
current tenants have experienced any of the
same phenomena. I would never disclose the
address, but I will say that it is on the north
side of town in the Valley Middle School district.
In the end, I think my curiosity was
satisfied enough that I have absolutely no interest in seeing a ghost. Im not sure, now
that Im much older, how I would deal with
things if I did see something spooky. The interest in the paranormal still interests me, but
I am quite happy to feed my appetite with
shows like Ghost Adventures. Let the ghosts
follow THEM home instead.

outine, noun: commonplace tasks that must be

completed at regular intervals. I doubt theres a better
word that describes most of our lives, lol
(permit me this one time to defame the
English language). For some of us, that
routine is nothing more than wake up,
work, eat, sleep, repeat. Something like
robots, more or less.

To an extent, routine is a system Id

like to install a motherload virus onto and
crash the whole thing. Because theres
something way deep down in me, way
deep down in you, that yearns for anything but. Everyday theres this crave for
adventure, a longing to be wild. Wild
at heart. What lies within us are the
dreams and desires to be a hero; to be a
warrior, to live a life of adventure and
risk.
Its come to my realization recently
that, theres one question we all need to
ask ourselves in order to truly be adventurous and get the most out of life: why
not? Because, indeed it is possible to become fully alive and experience everything you can imagine but its rather
aimlessly if its without love.
Ah, love! The guidance of all that is
good. All our days ought to be crafted by
it, all our goals designed in its spirit.
Why not your adventure be to lift up
those around you, to put a smile on that
waitresss face which has been a frown

HUGS and, yes, getting hugs! The most

dramatic experience was when I hugged
this little frail lady who after hugging me
told me her story. She represented a
Widows support group. Apparently I
hugged her before, and she told her group
about it. They all felt loved because, it
was a sign to them that someone cared;
someone understood what theyre going
through even if it was a stranger. One act
of kindness goes a long away. By the
way, the man who started the free hugs
thing, is named Juan Mann (pronounced
ONE MAN).
All it takes is one man. One person,
one individual to make a real difference
in this world. Dont believe society; dont
believe the lie they say and what you say
within yourself that you cant make a difference or that you dont matter. Because
YOU DO. You have no idea what youre
capable of. Find yourself. People are and
will be so thankful they found you.
God loves you and so do I.

all day? Why not buy several packs of

post-its, placing them all over town, on
trees, on products and otherwise, simply
reminding people to smile, you are loved,
or God loves you. Although you may not
ever see the impact you are causing, peoples lives change. A certain movie in this
kind of spirit is recalled in my memory:
Pay it Forward.
Id like to share a quick story if you
mind. A heck of an adventure in its own
right (to my petty mind at least)- One day
I stumbled upon a youtube video called
Free Hugs. All it was, was a music
video where this guy stands around in
public and holds up a sign that reads,
FREE HUGS. After standing around
for awhile, somebody hugs him. And
then another, and another. The video
moved me to tears and prompted me to
begin doing the same. So for some odd
number of weekends, I spent time Saturday mornings at the Grand Cities Mall
holding up a sign that read FREE

t wasnt until the past few months

that Ive completely awoken to
the reality of just how rampant
abuse and neglect is in our society. How rampant it is even in our local
safe community of Grand Forks. How
lucky I feel to be able to come from a
family with two parents, yet alone loving
ones. Today, many of us only have a single parent and often, one might not even
get deserving love from that one.
I began to make new friends who, one

by one, are experiencing abuse and neglect whether it is from parents or bad relationships. Many girl friends of mine,
who are incredibly beautiful with tender
hearts, are going through bad relationships. Still other friends of mine are single parents and dont know a single thing
about parenting. I also hear from local
teachers who have students who simply
cant communicate, cant see things from
others perspectives, resulting in serious
ignorance and living a culture of superficiality.
Why? Wheres the love? Why is the
modern family so broken? It breaks my
heart. I feel like Im a North Dakota in
the US, meaning ND is in a well-off
bubble from the rest of the countrys financial distraught, so too am I in a welloff bubble from a lot of my friends.
No, I cant just walk up to people and
say your wounds are healed, get up and
walk! Im not Jesus. But what I can do,
what you can do, is point them in the direction of healing. And theres A LOT of
people who are hurting, believe me. I bet
anything several of YOUR friends are
hurting, but you dont even realize it be-

cause we all wear the masks, the masks

that portray some sunshine-type happiness that was never really there to begin
with. Theres a secret life of cutting behind that beautiful face, there are bruises
underneath that sweater. I just want to
make people aware of these realities so
when something does come up, you can
be of console and of course lead people
in the direction of healing.
Heres how you can do that. Be of ears.
Listen to their story. If somethings involving abuse, we have an organization
in town thats highly recognized for its
effort in this cause. Community Violence
Intervention Center or CVIC is who
youd want to talk to. Their 24-hour CRISIS lines are available at 701-746-8900
and Toll Free at 1-866-746-8900. They
can do a number of things so dont be shy.
Their website is www.CVIConline.org .
You can also volunteer for them.
If youre someone whos struggling,
then please know that youre not alone. I
dont know who you are beyond these
words, but I love you. Theres a God out
there who knows every single struggle
you go through, and He loves you too.

Some people might know that I also promote concerts in the area. Last month one
of the artists that came to town from San
Jose, California called I AM EMPIRE,
sang songs that are entirely focused on
parental abandonment and healing. The
songs from the album KINGS, a rock
album with a dash of classic rock inspiration. I highly recommend it and music
overall, as a means of healing. Its a call
to unite all those whove gone through
abandonment and abuse. The lyrics are as
follows,
We are the sons and daughters of broken homes
Kings of great peace couldn't compare
to us
Because we are the light wherever
darkness breeds
And we will never bow to them.
You can make this the last night feeling like this; feeling alone, feeling down.
God will wrap you in His arms. If you
need a friend to talk to, I volunteer. My
name is Mike and you can find me on

elieve it or not, the youth of our

generation crave to find an escape that doesn't involve drugs
or alcohol. Unfortunately, with
amassing peer pressure and the constant culture bombardments of media and corporations, this proves very difficult to resist at
times. It can become overbearing just to find
the right friends who are involved in all the
right things.
I would like to share with you an answer,
a solution, an escape to our cold society, and
your so-called friends. Music.
Music is powerful. It can lift you up, or it
can wreck you. You celebrate with it, and you
join in sadness with it. It can heal and yet lead
to the utter destruction of lives. Everyone
seems to be able to find music they can relate
to, a message that seemingly corresponds
with their lives and emotions. But I'm asking
you a question, why settle just for music you

The sound and

power of music
can relate to? To me, music should be much
more. In consideration of the fact it is as powerful as anything else in our world, it should
inspire you to live a better life and to impact
your surroundings in a positive way. We already have too much destruction, too many
cold hearts and hurt in this world; why add to
it?
I've been promoting local positive and
Christian shows in the area since October of
last year. And I must say, it's heartbreaking to
see all of the hurt in such young audiences.
It's like there's this large hole in hearts that
cannot ever be filled with things like drugs,
sex and alcohol. But there is someplace you
can go. Some place you can find like-minded
people with the same hurts and passions.
Check out a local show and celebrate life
with your friends and meet new ones. Become inspired by local artists, as they carve
out this region's unique identity. Music is
about you; it is about me. Concerts are about

us and our struggles. You can do more with

your life; all you have to do is dream big and
never give up. I've witnessed some amazing
things myself simply by finding and not giving up on my dreams; you can too. This I
promise, so long as you don't give up.
So with that, I dare you to find music not
just that you can relate to. Not just music that
prompts several more tears than you can handle. But music that pushes you to look to the
sky. To breathe in the fresh air and close your
eyes. That, is the meaning of music. The talent is out there, and the talent is here.
Whether your taste is in acoustic and piano
sounds like UND's Emily Doll, upbeat rock
like The Valiant Nomads or intense hardcore
and punk like The Suit, your music is right
here in town. And your new friends are waiting.
Downtown Grand Forks' FreedomChurch
has become a go-to destination for local culture celebrated through music. Every other

Friday you'll find acoustic acts (very diverse

in style) like Emily. January 7th is the next
show. FreedomChurch takes on the name
The Ember for these events. Once a month,
I put on live rock concerts featuring some of
the region's top acts. My website,
www.CrossHub.net has a local show calendar
where local bands can add their own shows
to it. You can also become a friend of
CrossHub shows on Facebook at www.facebook.com/crosshub.net.
Come join us. Join us in the celebration of
our lives and its struggles. The celebration of
local music and the power thereof. Let us believe in each other, even if for just one night.
We are always looking for a permanent
venue in Grand Forks to consistently host
local and positive all-age shows. If your
venue is interested, contact me, Mike Peterson, at rudys_fire@hotmail.com
