Walker made one start with the Rainiers over that stretch, posting a 9.0-inning shutout in Tacomas 2-0 win over Oklahoma City on Tuesday, J une 24. He limited the RedHawks to 4 hits, issued 1 walk and struck out a season-high 8 batters on the way to collecting his first career shutout. The outing marked the second complete game of Walkers career and first since tossing 9.0 innings with Single-A Clinton in a win against Great Lakes on J une 13, 2011. In 6 starts at Tacoma this season, Walker has compiled a 2-1 record and a 4.11 ERA (14 ER, 30.2 IP). He has struck out 29 batters, walked 10 and held opposing hitters to .190 average in his second season with the Rainiers. Walker originally joined Tacomas roster on May 28 as part of a Major League rehab assignment before he was officially optioned to the Rainiers on J une 10.
SMOAK ON REHAB ASSIGNMENT: 1B Justin Smoak began his rehab assignment with AAA Tacoma on J une 18. In 12 rehab starts with the Rainiers is he batting .200 (9x45) with 5 runs scored 3 doubles, 1 home run, 3 RBI and 5 walks. He was placed on 15-day disabled list with a strained left quad J une 11 (retro to 6/10). Smoak had appeared in Seattles first 63 games of the season prior to missing the game on J une 10. In 63 games, he is hitting .208 (45x216) with 26 runs, 12 doubles, 7 home runs and 29 RBI this season.
HART ON REHAB ASSIGNMENT: OF Corey Hart began his rehab assignment with AAA Tacoma on J une 21. In 10 rehab starts with Tacoma, he is batting .297 (11x37) with 2 runs scored, 3 doubles, 1 triple, 1 home run, 4 RBI and 4 walks. Hart, 32, was removed from May 18 vs. the Minnesota Twins with a strained left hamstring. He was evaluated by Mariners Medical Director Dr. Edward Khalfayan the following day in Seattle, where he was diagnosed with a grade 2 hamstring strain. In 37 games this season Hart was batting .209 (29x139) with 5 doubles, 5 home runs and 17 RBI. He missed the entire 2013 season after undergoing a pair of knee surgeries.
COACHING STAFF: Roy Howell is the 29th manager in Tacoma franchise history. Howell is in his third season coaching in the Mariners organization after two seasons as the hitting coach at Class-A Advanced High Desert. His managerial resume includes 3 seasons at short- season Eugene (2003-05), 3 seasons with San Luis of the California Collegiate League (2007-10) and one season leading the field staff for the Road Warriors of the independent Atlantic League (2011). A former first-round selection by Texas in the 1972 draft, Howell logged time in the PCL as a player with Spokane (1974) and Portland (1985), as well as three seasons as a hitting coach with Portland (2000-02). MLB FUTURES ALL-STAR GAME
Seattle Mariners minor league infielder D.J. Peterson has been selected to play for the U.S. squad, while outfielder Gabby Guerrero will represent the World team in the 16th annual SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game to be played Sunday, J uly 13 at Target Field in Minnepolis as part of All-Star weekend.
The Mariners have had 31 selections to the Futures Game since its first began in 1999. Seven players on the current 25-man roster (+DL) played in the Futures Game in the past: John Buck (2002), Robinson Cano (2003-04), Corey Hart (2002), Felix Hernandez (2004), Logan Morrison (2010), James Paxton (2011) and Michael Saunders (2007). Brad Miller was selected to the 2013 U.S. Team, but was unable to play due to his promotion to the Major League squad. Buck (All-Star: 2010, Futures Game: 2002), Cano (All-Star: 2006, 2010-13, Futures Game: 2003 & 2004), Hart (All-Star: 2008 & 2010, Futures Game: 2002) and Hernandez (All- Star: 2009, 2011-13; Futures Game: 2004) are each one of 115 players to have competed n both the SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game and the Major League Baseball All-Star Game.
The SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game, which is now in its 16th year, features the top Minor League prospects competing in a nine-inning contest as part of Taco Bell All-Star Sunday. The U.S. Team, which has won each of the last four contests, leads the all-time series, 9-6. The game will begin at 5:00 p.m. (ET)/4:00 p.m. (CT) and can be viewed live on MLB Network and MLB.com. Featured on MLB Network for the first time, the SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game will be called by Matt Vasgersian, Sean Casey and Heidi Watney, along with MLB.coms J onathan Mayo.
Major League Baseball, in conjunction with the Major League Baseball Scouting Bureau, MLB.com, Baseball America and the 30 Major League Clubs, selected the 25 players currently on each team.
