The spread of the desert The spread of the desert The spread of the desert The spread of the desert
DesertiIication, which is the process in which productive land changes into desert, is an

DesertiIication usually occurs in dry areas where there is no rain and where the climate is
harsh. In these places, the top layer oI soil is destroyed so that the land can no longer be
used Ior growing crops or grazing animals. This means that people who depend on the land
Ior Iood have to move to greener areas in order to survive. A proportion oI the population
may survive by moving, but others may die because oI shortages oI Iood and water.

Although natural changes in the climate oIten start the process, the activities oI human
beings are oIten the real cause oI desertiIication. Because there are growing numbers oI
people to Ieed, Iarmers tend to overcultivate their land, with the result that the soil
becomes poor and unproductive. Other Iarmers overgraze their land and this permanently
kills oII grass and other plants. In addition to the eIIects oI Iarming, deIorestation the
cutting down oI trees also erodes the soil.

Trees are usually cut down to make more agricultural land, but once there are no longer

Our Visit to Wadi Rum Our Visit to Wadi Rum Our Visit to Wadi Rum Our Visit to Wadi Rum
Hisham and I have just got home Irom a three-day visit to Wadi Rum. It was only a
short visit but I will remember it Iorever. Wadi Rum is an open space between high
rocks and mountains. Tourists visit the area to see the beautiIul scenery.
We arrived on Tuesday evening and the Iirst thing we did was set up our camp. The
sky was very clear and at night we could see millions oI stars. The next morning was
very hot but we had to walk up to the top oI the valley. We saw cave paintings and
ancient buildings made by the Nabataeans, who also built Petra. The huge rocks there
were amazing some were hundreds oI metres high.
The next day was another scorching hot day and we went to Jabal Rum, the second
highest point in Jordan. It was incredible to be able to see all across Jordan. As the sun
went down over the desert, we saw the rocks slowly change colour, Irom a dark red to
pink and purple. It was an amazing sight I will never Iorget.

that, in , road accidents were ninth on the list oI causes oI death worldwide. Sadly, the
report might get even worse.
The number oI rod deaths and serious injuries among car users has Iallen by twenty- three
percent in recent years thanks to the increased use oI seatbelts. At the same time, the number oI
slight injuries has risen by IiIty percent, which indicates that the number oI road accidents in
general is in Iact going up. The main reason Ior the rise in road deaths is that more people are
choosing to travel by car rather than risk cycling or walking along busy roads. Because people
in cars are more protected Irom the Iorce oI any impact, they are less likely to be seriously
injured than people on Ioot. It seems, then, that as long as drivers continue to be careless, selI-
protection is the key to surviving todays traIIic.
- A trip to the funfair
We have been planning Ior a long time to go to the IunIair Ior brothers birthday, so on the big
day we all piled up into the car and set oII. The traIIic was so bad that day that it took us nearly
two hours to get there. Then we discovered that halI the people in town had had the same idea.
The place was so packed that you could hardly move. My brother wanted to go on the roller
coaster, so we joined the queue- which it seemed to be about a mile long- and waited Ior our
turn. By the time we got to the Iront oI the queue, my sister was complaining that she was so
aIraid to go on the ride, and even my brother looked a bit apprehensive. Just then a man
announced that there was a technical problem and the ride was closed. With a sign oI relieI we
went to get something to eat, had a go on the bumper cars, played cars, played a Iew games-my
brother won a huge teddy bear- and then we went home.
- Why studying abroad
Studying abroad oIIers students many advantages. The students live in a new culture, so they
can learn in and out oI the classroom. They learn to be Ilexible, because they have to adapt to
diIIicult ways oI living. They are Iar away Irom home. ThereIore, they have to become
responsible and selI-reliant. They have an experience they will remember all their lives.
However, there are several problems that might Iace students who go to study abroad. First oI
all, living away Irom home is much more expensive than living at home. In addition, most
teenagers are not mature enough to live Iar away Irom their Iamilies. ThereIore, they oIten get
into trouble. Also, many students Ieel lonely and homesick, so they are unable to study. Finally,
and most importantly, students who go away to go away to study may lose contact with their
Iamilies. Many oI them might marry Ioreigners and never return to their countries.
- Money in our life
Money is considered a very important thing in our liIe. It provides us with all necessities oI liIe
such as Iood, rent, clothing, school Ieesetc. It is also needed in illness to pay Ior the doctors
and to buy the necessary medicines. With money, you can obtain the necessities oI liIe, but also
many comIorts and luxuries.
However, money may be sometimes dangerous when it causes people to do the wrong Ior its
sake. Some people love money to the extent they are aIraid oI spending it. So, they deprive
themselves oI the pleasures oI liIe. Money may also make people hate each other, quarrel with

our liIe cant be denied, but we have to think oI it as a means rather than a Iinal aim.
- How harmful smoking is
BeIore you have your own cigarette, please think how harmIul smoking is. Smokers say
that smoking is a pleasant thing which helps them to think over diIIicult matters, to solve
diIIerent problems, and to overcome the obstacles they meet in their liIe. Others smoke to Iorget
about their pains, troubles and cares. Even some lazy people, who have nothing to do, smoke to
pass their time and amuse themselves.
This is may be true according to them, but we should know that the relaxing eIIect oI
smoking will soon become the source oI illness. Some people smoke so much that they ruin
their health. These people are exposed to many health problems such as lung cancer, heart
attacks, stomachaches and blood vessels problems. We should also bear in mind that smoking
does not only aIIect your health, but also wastes your money.
Very Iew people can get rid oI the smoking habit because bad habits are diIIicult to be given up
easily. So, to avoid smoking or any bad habit, you should keep busy with useIul hobbies and
things. Think oI how many more steps you will climb iI you stop smoking. Think oI what you
may buy with the money you waste on cigarettes. And Iinally iI you still want to smoke, think
about the others who will get harmed by your cigarette smoke.
- Participating in Voluntary Work
Last summer, I participated in voluntary activity in my school. We Iormed a voluntary group to
look aIter the school property and Iacilities. We were guided and supported by adult volunteers
experts in their particular Iields. We painted the school and cleaned it. We cleaned out its
reservoirs and marked out the volleyball and Iootball pitches. We planted some trees in the
schools garden. We did some repair work Ior our school. It took us two weeks to do those
voluntary works. The school provided us with all the necessary materials and tools. We had
