Impresionante catedral.

dez.
Mel rose Abbey

http://www.aboutscotland.com/mel.html

Culzean is a romantic 18
th
century Castle built by Robert Adam for David Kennedy, 10th Earl
of Cassillis. It perches on the cliff edge above the Firth of Clyde with ever-changing views of Arran
and the Ailsa Craig - sometimes they're hiding in the mist, at others, they seem so close that you feel
you could reach out and touch them!
Culzean is set in a Country Park of over 500 acres. This offers something for everyone with its
wooded walks, the Swan Pond, a new (1999) Adventure Playground, Walled Gardens, shoreline, Visi-
tor Centre, shops and restaurants. Exciting new projects to improve facilities are ongoing.
The aim of this page is to share information about a very special place with the world. Internal
and external links are provided to associated sites and a bibliography of relevant reading material is in-
7
cluded.

Like a storybook castle, this fantastic example of Robert Adam's genius stands dramatically on
a cliff with superb views across the sea to the mountains of the Island of Arran.
Between 1777 and 1792 Adam converted an old fortified towercastle for David Kennedy, the
10th Earl of Cassillis, creating at Culzean (pronounced "Cullane") probably the finest Georgian castle
in Scotland. Its Circular Saloon and Oval Staircase are acknowledged as Adam's final masterpiece.
When the Kennedy family donated the castle to the National Trust for Scotland in 1945 they
asked that the top floor be given to General Eisenhower as a thank you from the people of Scotland.
Ike first came to Culzean in 1946 and was clearly touched to accept this gift. He visited the cas-
tle three more times, once as President when, for a short while, Culzean was his Scottish White House.
His longest stay was during his retirement when he enjoyed painting and walking in the peace
and quiet of Culzean's beautiful gardens, woodland and shore, as well as playing golf nearby.
He wrote of Culzean, "This is a place I can relax."

zona de The Trossachs.
Loch Lomond
Loch Lomond is a Scottish loch located in both the western lowlands of Central Scotland and
the southern Highlands. It is located in the council areas of Stirling, Argyll and Bute, and West
Dunbartonshire, and its southern shores lie approximately 14 miles (23 km) north of Glasgow, the
country's largest city.
This freshwater loch is approximately 37 kilometres long, and up to 8 kilometres wide, with an
average depth of about 37 metres, and a maximum depth of about 190 metres. It has a surface area of
approximately 71 square kilometres, and a volume of about 2.6 km
3
. Its surface area is the largest of
the lochs, and is second biggest after Loch Ness in terms of water volume in Great Britain, although it
is not the largest in the British Isles - this distinction belongs to Lough Neagh in Northern Ireland.

Loch Lomond Shores is a principal gateway to Scotlands first National Park. It is Scotlands
most spectacular visitor destination combining the beautiful environment with an outstanding mixture
of leisure and shopping experiences overlooking the majesty of Loch Lomond at Balloch.
The National Park feels worlds apart from the bustle of city life. Yet its less than an hour from
Glasgow and not much more from Edinburgh. A place of contrasts, it covers four distinctly different
and special areas:
Ben Lomond standing guard over Loch Lomond, the largest expanse of freshwater in Great
Britain
The Trossachs, wild glens and sparkling lochs between Callander and Aberfoyle
9
Breadalbane, the high country of the north, with some of Scotlands finest munros, Ben Lui,
Ben Challum, Ben More and Ben Vorlich
The Argyll Forest of the Cowal peninsula watched over by the Arrochar Alps and bordered by
sea lochs.

The Trossachs (Scottish Gaelic, Na Trosaichean) itself is a small woodland glen in the Stirling
council area of Scotland. It lies between Ben An to the north and Ben Venue to the south, with Loch
Katrine to the west and Loch Achray to the east. However, the name is used generally to refer to the
wider area of wooded glens and braes with quiet lochs, lying to the east of Ben Lomond.
The scenic charms of this area came to popularity when Walter Scott extended his romantic
portrayal of Scotland's past from border ballads to poems of a medieval past rich in chivalry and
symbolism, with his 1810 poem Lady of the Lake giving a roll call of Trossachs place names, the lady
herself being found on Loch Katrine. This was followed up by his 1817 historical novel Rob Roy
romanticising the outlaw cattle thief Raibert Ruadh born by Loch Katrine and buried at nearby
Balquhidder. Perhaps ironically, Scotland's only lake, the Lake of Menteith, lies about 6 miles (10 km)
to the south east of the glen, on the edge of the Trossachs area.

The island is an island of peninsulas giving it a long and varied coastline that offers visitors
endless days of exploration and discovery. The mountains that stretch across the middle of the island
rise to over 900 metres and are particularly popular with hillwalkers. Mountain ranges in the south and
the east are pierced by glens and waterfalls.
Mull is home to a wide range of wildlife and is one of best places in Europe to see the Golden
Eagle ( Aquila chrysaetos ) and White Tailed Sea Eagle. It also offers a home to the elusive European
Otter (Lutra Lutra).
Organised Whale and Dolphin watching trips on which Minke Whales and Dolphins among
others can be seen, are available on the Island.

This excursion is one of the best day tours in Britain, providing a scenic route through the beau-
tiful isle of Mull and a visit to the Isle of Iona to see the famous abbey, but the highlight of this tour is
the awe-inspiring visit to the unique Isle of Staffa to see Fingal's Cave.
This tour departs rom the Ferry Terminal, Railway Pier, Oban on Caledonian Macbrayne's MV
Isle of Mull, crossing the Firth of Lorne to Craignure on Mull where you join our private coach. The
scenic route through the Island is via Glen More to Fionnphort where you board the ferry for Staffa.
After landing on Staffa and visiting Fingal's Cave, you sail south to Iona. There is now an opportunity
to have a late lunch or snack at Martyr's Bay Restaurant, which is conveniently situated near Iona pier.

Three Isles Early Bird Excursin
Salida a las 07:45. Regreso a las 17:45. Precio adulto 37 libras. Precio nio 18,50 libras.
This tour to Mull, Iona and Staffa is similar to the Three Isles Excursion. It leaves Oban earlier

Iona for lunch and to explore the island. You also save with the 'Early Bird' Special Fare.
Treshnish Isles Tour
Salida a las 10:00. Regreso a las 19:45. Precio adulto 42 libras. Precio nio 21 libras.
This is the ultimate choice in tours for those interested in ornithology and the natural history of
these beautiful unspoilt islands.
We spend over two hours ashore on Lunga, the largest of the Treshnish Isles to visit the large
colony of puffins nesting there.
Lunga was inhabited until the 1850's- the islanders leaving their isolated homes as a monument
to their hardy existence which is now envied by those of us whose lifestyles are spoiled by the
disadvantages of modern times. The views from their ruined homes are superb with spectacular
scenery, seals off the shore, puffins on the doorstep and many thousands of guillemots perched
precariously on the Harp Rock nearby. The silence is broken by the calls of the seabirds as they come
ashore to their nesting sites.
After Lunga we sail sail to Staffa to visit Fingal's Cave. This tour provides a chance to view
seals and occassionally dolphins, basking sharks and whales in their habitat in the seas around the
Treshnish Isles and Staffa.
Oban, el Dunst af f nage Cast l e y l a I r on Fur nace
torres defensivas cuadradas tambin.

http://www.duartcastle.com/
of Mull.
This castle dates from the 13th century and was probably built for the MacDougalls. In the late
14th century, it became the seat of the MacLean Clan when the tower house was added. The family left
the castle in the latter part of the 17th century when they retreated to the Treshnish Isles. Subsequently,
Government troops took the castle and held it for some years.
For over a hundred years it lay in ruin until it was bought and restored in 1911/12 by Sir
Fitzroy MacLean. Duart Castle now houses much MacLean memorabilia. You can visit the
Banqueting Hall, the Sea Room and various state rooms. Upstairs is the story of the MacLean chiefs.

Named because of it's appearance, which really does look like a carefully pleated kilt, this rock
formation on the Isle of Skye was quite popular the day we stopped, even if it was raining a bit. There
are those who say that Skye is the most beautiful part of Scotland, and I'm inclined to agree with them
-- it is breathtakingly gorgeous. The mist was coming in from the sea, and rolling over the mountains

that this sacred banner, believed to date from the 7th century, will bring success to the chief or his clan
if unfurled in an emergency. However, the charm will only work on three occasions and it has already
been used twice to secure MacLeod victories in battle. Nancy MacCorkill covers this story in her
article.
The castle is open daily from mid March to end October daily 10am - 5pm. Also open winter
time 11am - 4pm. Tickets can be purchase for admission to the castle and gardens combined, or just
for the gardens. Restaurant and souvenir shop located in the car park. Guided tours lasting 45 minutes
can be arranged by appointment and it may be possible to meet the owner.
Boat trips in the loch are run in a motor vessel from the castle jetty near which there are picnic
tables. On the peninsula opposite are two flat-topped peaks, each 500 metres high, known as Macleod's
Tables.
Follow the shoreline path north of the castle to Claigan. Near there is the so-called Coral Bay.
In fact it is calcified seaweed with some small shells and tiny pebbles which makes it this pale yellow

The Eilean Donan Castle has been voted the only thing in Britain you must see before you die,
according to a recent BBC publication!!!

One Hour Cruise
This cruise is aimed at all ages. With a little bit of history about the area, this trip gives you the
chance to get close to common and grey seals in their natural habitat and learn a little about them too.
You may encounter porpoise, minke whales and occasionally dolphins.

Two Hour Cruise
A slightly longer cruise, giving us more time to visit the many bird colonies where we find a
huge variety of seabirds nesting side by side. You may see porpoise, seals, dolphins and whales along
the way. Plus of course the wonderful scenery, and the magic of it all.
If time allows we may deploy the underwater camera to view , starfish, crabs, sea urchins, soft
corals and jellyfish or if we are lucky enough to be in the company of a pod of porpoise or dolphins we
may deploy the hydrophone to hear communication between them.
For the real enthusiast why not join us on an 'Early Bird' Cruise. A chance to get out on the
water at a quieter time just as the wildlife begins to waken.

Handa Island is internationally famous for its sea-bird colonies, including the largest breeding
colony of guillemots in Britain and there are estimated to be around 120,000 pairs of breeding on Han-
da! There are also puffin, fulmar, shag, razorbill, skuas (both arctic and great), kittiwake, gulls and
23
terns.
Handa is renowned for its magnificent Torridonian Sandstone cliffs, which rise to a height of
400 feet along the dramatic northern edge of the island. Thousands of years of weathering of the sands-
tone has formed horizontal layers which provide ideal disturbance free places for seabirds to breed.
The moorland of the interior is home to arctic and great skuas. It is worth pausing for a moment
to watch their spectacular flying displays. The great skua, or bonxie, is a powerful bird which will
often bully other seabirds and make them disgorge their fish. They also rob kittiwake eggs and chicks
and will regularly kill other species. Great Skua will attack and sometimes drown a bird as large as a
gannet. They can be aggressive in defence of their eggs and young, and may swoop low enough to
strike an intruders head with their feet.
The arctic skua is noisy and demonstrative. During their graceful flying displays they show a
complete mastery of the air. Much of their food is obtained by chasing other seabirds and forcing them
to drop or disgorge their catch. On the breeding ground this species can be even more aggressive than
the great skua, dive-bombing at human or animal intruders as well as other skuas.
The Great Stack is the best place to experience the excitement and clamour of Handas 180,000
seabirds. Over 9,000 guillemots alone breed on the ledges on the stacks east face. Puffins nest in
burrows on top of the stack where they probably retreated to avoid predation by the introduced brown
rats. Following the successful eradication of rats in 1997, puffins are just beginning to recolonise the
main island.
As you walk along the cliff watch the graceful fulmars in flight. They are superb flyers and can
hang almost motionless as they ride the air currents on straight narrow wings. Fulmars nest on narrow
ledges near the top of the cliffs. For about eight weeks male and female take turn to brood the single
egg, usually for spells of two to five days.
Guillemots and razorbill are generally found below the fulmars. Razorbill lay their single egg
in crevices. Guillemots nest in packed communities and often share eggs, chicks and mates. Kittiwakes
build their nests even lower down on narrow ledges. Their nests are made of grass cemented together
by droppings. Kittiwake are true ocean gulls and only come ashore to breed, spending the long winter
months at sea.
As you walk along the cliffs you may also see many of the areas marine wildlife such as
dolphins, porpoises, seals and the occasional whale. Minke whales, which are the whales most
commonly seen from Handa, have a small dorsal fin two thirds of the way down their back.

The picturesque ruins of Urquhart Castle are situated 2 miles from Drumnadrochit on a rocky
peninsula on the banks of Loch Ness. After a chequered history, the building was blown up in 1692 to
prevent it becoming a Jacobite stronghold. The castle was purchased by a Mr Chewett in the 1930s and
in 2003 was gifted by his widow to The National Trust for Scotland.

Castle Urquhart stands on a rocky promontary on the north shore of Loch Ness. As soon as you
get here you cant help thinking, "Well, if I were going to build a castle to survey this wide glen, and
the loch itself, this is where I'd build it!" In fact people were almost certainly here at least 4000 years
ago. At nearby Corrimony is a burial cairn dating from about 2000 BC. However, although some evi-
dence has been found of a fort on this promontory dating from the Iron Age, and also remains from
Pictish times, earliest written records for the existence of a castle date from the 1200's.

http://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/inverness/caledoniancanal/index.html
The Caledonian Canal runs for 60 miles along the Great Glen from Corpach near Fort William
in the South West to Inverness in the North East.
The canal was started in 1803 to plans produced by Thomas Telford following survey work by
James Watt thirty years earlier. It was the biggest of the building schemes undertaken by the
Government to provide work and stem the flood of emigration from the Highlands. The huge scale of
the work and the shortage of skilled engineers meant that the seven year schedule and 350,000 budget
always looked optimistic. It was: by the time the canal finally opened in 1822 it had taken 17 years and
cost 840,000. And instead of the 20 foot depth in Telford's plans, the canal when it initially opened
was only 14 feet deep, too shallow for many of the increasingly large ships being built at the time.
Unsurprisingly, the canal did not initially prove successful. A second phase of construction was
undertaken between 1844 and 1847. What emerged from this was, finally, the canal originally
proposed by Telford.
Once finished, the Caledonian Canal provided the long hoped-for route between eastern and
western Scotland. This allowed mariners to avoid the long and often hazardous route round the west of
Scotland and through the Pentland Firth. The irony was that by the time the canal was finally
complete, steam ships could make the passage around Scotland much more easily than the sailing ships
in whose era it was designed. Nonetheless, until the railway reached Inverness the quickest way from
there to Glasgow was by steamer via the Caledonian and Crinan Canals, probably calling at Oban en
route.
Of its 60 mile length, 38 miles are along Loch Lochy, Loch Oich and Loch Ness, with the
remaining 22 miles being through canals proper. The biggest problem faced by the designers and
builders was one of level; and along the length of the canal there are no fewer than 29 locks.

Strathisla Distillery was founded in 1786 by Alexander Milne and George Taylor, which makes
it the oldest distillery in Speyside. Although the illicit distillery was built in the valley (strath) by the
river Isla, it was not initially named Strathisla but instead went under the name of Milltown because of
its proximity to Miltown Castle. The whisky produced was however called Strahisla-Glenlivet.
The distillery was sold to William Longmorne in 1828. Longmorne successfully ran the
distillery for many years and greatly expanded the capacity by replacing the original 500 litre stills
with two stills holding 10.000 and 20.000 litres each. In the mid-1880s much of the distillery was lost
to a fire and was replaced with the beautiful buildings we see today. The twin pagoda roof is likely to
be one of the very first in Scotland. Strathisla was one of the first distilleries in Scotland to launch their
whisky as a single malt besides supplying the blended industry. In 1880 it also became the first
distillery in northern Scotland to be included in a limited company.
The distillery changed names between Strathisla and Milton or Milltown a few times in the late
19th century, but ended up being called Milton (or Milltown) Distillery until 1950 when it was sold to
Chivas Brothers who renamed it Strathisla Distillery. In 1965 the number if stills were expanded from

Strathisla Distillery takes its water from a spring right across the road called Fons Bullion (the
bubbling spring). Their malt is bought lightly peated from local suppliers (Pauls of Buckie). For a short
period of time Strathisla made a more peated whisky, the Craigduff, in order to take some market share
from tthe Islay whiskies. The attempt was unsuccessful and production of Craigduff was soon

Strathisla has a copper top mash tun, which holds five tons. The ten washbacks are made from
Oregon pine, each with a capacity of 22.500 litres. The distillery uses four copper stills; two lantern-
model wash stills which hold 12.500 litres each, and two wide-necked boiling ball spirit stills with a
capacity of 8.500 litres each. Since there is no room for warehouses on site, Strathisla store their
whisky in the town of Keith. The whisky is matured in sherry and bourbon casks. Bottling is done in
Newbridge outside of Edinbur
In 1999 Strathisla produced close to two million litres of whisky. Strathisla is an important
component of the blended whisky Chivas Regal.
Visitors: Visitors are welcome between April and October Monday-Friday 10am-4pm, Sunday
12.30am-4pm. The modern visitor centre was built in 1995. Guided tours are held as demand dictates,
admission is 5. Strathisla also has a tour book, which is much appreciated by visitors. Upon advance

Cri eff Hi ghl and Games

There can be little doubt that traditional Games of agility and strength have been practised in
the Highlands from very early times. Formalisation and annual gatherings began around 1820 as part
of the revival of Tartan and Highland Culture encouraged by Sir Walter Scott. In 1848 the Braemar
Highland Games was attended by Queen Victoria. By this time the competitions were much as they are
today with traditional stone and hammer throwing, tossing the caber, piping and dancing along with
running and jumping events.

Crieff Games - 1935
The first Crieff Highland Gathering was in 1870 and has occured every year since with the two
exceptions of 1914-18 and 1939-49 when no gatherings took place.

A visit to Stirling Castle is an essential part of any visit to central Scotland. Its location rivals
even Edinburgh Castle's for sheer magnificence as it sits on its high volcanic rock, visible for many
miles in every direction.
The Castle is in the care of Historic Scotland and is open to the public all year round and seven
days a week. This page provides a brief glimpse of what the castle has to offer; you can find out more
about particular parts of it via the clickable map to the right.
A site as important as the castle rock at Stirling, guarding as it does the lowest crossing point of
the River Forth, would have been of strategic interest to anyone wanting to control central Scotland.

Boat trips begin in the basin outside The Falkirk Wheel Visitor Centre, by boarding one of a
fleet of special boats. The boat starts its journey by sailing into the bottom caisson of The Wheel,
which then makes a graceful sweep, lifting the boat up to join the Union Canal 35m above. The ascent
takes approximately 15 minutes, allowing plenty of time to enjoy the stunning views of the spectacular
surrounding scenery.
Once lifted, the boat sails smoothly from The Wheel straight onto the Union Canal. This passes
along the aqueduct, through the 180 metre Roughcastle Tunnel and under the historic Antonine Wall.
The boat will then return for an effortless descent that gently carries the boat down over the Visitor
Centre, and back into the basin by the boardwalk.

Rossl yn Chapel
