Niryana Shoola Dasa

According to Dr. B. V. Raman's book "Studies in Jaimini

Astrology" from 19!" considerable im#ortance is gi$en to
Niryana Shoola Dasa by Jaimini%Sc&olars. 'o(e$er" t&e
e)#lanations by commentators regarding t&e met&od and sco#e
of calculating (ere $ague" and Dr. B. V. Raman t&erefore
decided to gi$e t&e most #o#ular met&od*

+uote*
"If the Lagna is an odd sign, the Dasa must start from the
Lagna. If the Lagna is an even sign, the Dasa starts from the
7th house. The order is direct or converse according as the
Lagna is odd or even. The duration of each Dasa is 9 years".

, used t&is met&od of calculating -iryana S&oola Dasa for
many years" and , got some good results from it. Also ,
obser$ed t&at t&is Dasa%system can be #rofitably used for all
kinds of #redictions bot& good and bad" and since it (as also
$ery easy and fast to use , soon became $ery fond of it.

.&ere (as &o(e$er a little doubt in my mind t&at somet&ing
im#ortant (as missing some(&ere" and t&is feeling moti$ated
me to take a close look into t&e JaiminiSutras myself to see
if #er&a#s , could find out somet&ing more about t&is.

, found out t&at t&ere are really many sutras dealing (it&
different kinds of Shoola Dasas in Jaimini%Sutras. ,n some
cases t&ey (ere calculated from t&e different /araka%#laces
and sometimes from t&e 0araka%#lanets. But t&ey all &ad t(o
t&ings in common*

11 .&ey (ere of t&e duration of 9 years eac&.
21 .&ey mo$ed fore(ards and back(ards in case of odd and e$en
signs.

3# to t&is #oint my findings $ery muc& confirmed t&e met&od
gi$en by t&e late Dr. B. V. Raman. ,t (as only (&en , found
t(o sutras one%by%one dealing e)clusi$ely (it& -iryana S&oola
Dasa t&at all my doubts (ere cleared.

Suddenly , reali4ed &o( -iryana S&oola Dasa s&ould be
calculated and not only t&at. .&ere (as also an im#ortant
&int about a #eculiar (ay of using it for #redicti$e #ur#ose.

/; -<.=S*
,n sutra 17 (e are being told t&at in case of odd signs t&e
dasas are direct and eac& dasa gets 9 years. But (e are not
being told anyt&ing about counting t&e dasas from t&e 7t&
&ouse in case of e$en signs. <nly in t&e translators o(n
#ersonal notes on t&is sutra (e are being told to do so*

+uote*
If the commencing Dasa falls in a feminine sign then the
Dasas have to !e counted from the 7th sign from it. In
masculine horosco"es the $ram!ha Dasa commences from Lagna.
In feminine horosco"es it commences from the 7th.

/; -<.=S*
.&is may be eit&er t&e translators o(n o#inion or it may
#er&a#s come from some oral tradition t&at &e kno(s about. ,
don't kno( about t&at. , am &o(e$er not con$inced t&at it &as
anyt&ing to do (it& Jaimini.

.&en sutra 16 informs us t&at t&e 7t& &ouse s&ould be taken
first into account in case of -iryana S&oola Dasa. But still
not&ing s#ecial &as been said about t&e 7t& &ouse in relation
to t&e e$en signs.

Turning the table

>er&a#s t&ere is a muc& sim#ler solution to t&ese t(o sutras.
?&at if t&is 7t&%&ouse%business &as not&ing to do (it& odd
and e$en signs@ Aould it be" t&at Jaimini is really
suggesting t&e #ossibility of turning t&e table" so to s#eak"
by Budging t&e &orosco#e from bot& t&e Cagna and from t&e 7t&
in case of -iryana S&oola Dasa@

Aould it be a s#eciality of -iryana S&oola Dasa to Budge t&e
effect of t&e dasa not only from t&e D%ara &asi or running
Dasa itself" but also from t&e 7t& &ouse t&erefrom to get a
:ualified second o#inion@

, t&ink t&is is a $ery logical solution" and , &a$e sometimes
by mistake calculated t&e -iryana S&oola Dasa "(rongly" in
case of e$en signs by starting from t&e Cagna itself. , got
$ery nice results from t&is any(ay. .&en , &a$e also seen
some cases of t&e Ascendant being in an odd sign" (&ere t&e
#icture became e$en clearer (&en Budged from t&e 7t& &ouse.

Calculating Niryana Shoola Dasa

Based on t&is inter#retation of sutra 16 and 17 and by
ignoring t&e idea of counting t&e dasas from t&e 7t& &ouse in
case of e$en signs" , &a$e concluded t&e follo(ing t(o sim#le
rules about -iryana S&oola Dasa*

11 -iryana S&oola Dasa al%ays starts from t&e Ascendant
running fore(ards in case t&e Ascendant is an odd sign and
back(ards in case of an e$en sign.

21 =ac& dasa%#eriod runs for 9 years only.

No sub-periods

, &a$e ne$er seen anyt&ing indicating Jaimini using sub%
#eriods for t&e Dasa%systems &a$ing fi)ed #eriods like St&ira
Dasa and -iryana S&oola Dasa. , t&ink sub%#eriods (ere only
calculated in case of 'hara Dasa and t&e ot&er Dasa%systems
based on t&at #articular met&od of counting t&e years.

,n connection to St&ira Dasa and -iryana S&oola Dasa , am of
t&e im#ression t&at Jaimini used NavamsaDasa for #recise
timings. , t&ink t&e $ery (ord -a$amsa &as a double meaning
&ere by indicating t&e di$iding of not only t&e Ras&i but
also its S&oola%dasa%#eriod by 9. .&erefore t&e #eriod of
eac& -a$amsa%dasa (ill be <-= ;=AR only.

'o(e$er" t&e Sthira Dasa starts from t&e S,D- occu#ied by t&e
Bra&ma%#lanet" and (&en used in connection to St&ira Dasa t&e
-a$amsa Dasa s&ould start from t&e -AVA/SA occu#ied by t&e
Bra&ma%#lanet.

Navamsa Dasa

,n case of -iryana S&oola Dasa on t&e ot&er &and , belie$e
t&ere may be an additional solution. ,t seems logical to
assume t&at t&e -a$amsa Dasa could also start from t&e
Navamsa occu#ied by t&e Ascendant itself. .&is means (e get
t(o different kinds of -a$amsa Dasa. But t&en of course t&is
(&ole t&ing becomes a $ery delicate matter" since a minor
error in t&e birt&time of only a fe( minutes may gi$e a
com#letely different -a$amsa%Cagna.

Any(ay" t&is o#ens a $ery interesting area of researc&
regarding rectification of t&e birt&time" since -a$amsa%Dasa
seems to be a $ery effecti$e tool. ,t is &o(e$er a diffecult
subBect for researc&" since muc& de#ends on $ery accurate
birt&%data. ,t is $ery easy to go (rong" and it can be $ery
time%consuming if one &as to $erify not only t&e sign of t&e
Ascendant itself but also eac& one of t&e nine #ossible
na$amsas of t&e ascending sign.

,n case of doubt it may be a good idea to #lay it safe by
counting t&e -a$amsa Dasas from t&e -a$amsa occu#ied by t&e
Bra&ma%#lanet" as , &a$e described earlier in connection to
St&ira Dasa.

Transit Saturn

.&ere seems to be a $ery interesting relations&i# bet(een
transit Saturn and t&e -iryana S&oola Dasa. At first , didn't
belie$e t&is" but t&en little by little , came to reali4e t&e
ob$iousness of t&e trut& in t&is. >lease obser$e t&e
follo(ing sutra $ery closely*

#ada 59 may also be #redicted (it& reference to Sani and &is
#osition".

/; -<.=S*
, far as , &a$e seen" nobody &as e$er gi$en any kind of
serious consideration to t&e im#ortance of t&is sutra. ,t is
one of t&e $ery last sutras in a c&a#ter e)clusi$ely dealing
(it& different Dasa%systems including t&e -iryana S&oola
Dasa.

, t&ink t&is sutra is about transit Saturn" and , t&ink
Jaimini is &inting at t&e #ossibility of using transit Saturn
in connection to at least one of t&e Dasa%Systems in
#articular mentioned in t&at c&a#ter. , belie$e t&e -iryana
S&oola Dasa to be e)actly t&at Dasa%system" and , &a$e got
some $ery nice results from t&is.

Rules of judgment

?&en dealing (it& -iryana S&oola Dasa one &as to be a(are of
a fe( #eculiar rules of Jaimini regarding t&e #lanets Eand

Predicting marriage and children

, like to illustrate t&e so#&isticated use of transit Saturn
in combination (it& -iryana S&oola Dasa by (ay of an e)am#le"
and , like to em#loy t&e same e)am#le%&orosco#e as , &a$e
used earlier in case of A&ara Dasa" St&ira Dasa and -a$amsa

Leo-Dasa

.&e #erson (as born in t&e Demini%Ascendant Eodd sign1 and
counting fore(ards t&e #eriod of 9 years for eac& sign (e get
t&e running Niryana Shoola Dasa at t&at time as Leo.

?&en #eo#le are being married or starting im#ortant
relations&i#s t&en , &a$e often obser$ed transit Saturn being
trinal E1st%t&%9t&1 from eit&er t&e 1st or t&e 7t& &ouse
from t&e running -iryana S&oola Dasa. >lease obser$e t&at in
t&is &orosco#e Saturn by transitting in Cibra is actually
trinal from t&e 7t& &ouse of A:uarius.

,ndications like t&is s&ould &o(e$er al(ays be double%c&ecked
by ot&er met&ods suc& as A&ara Dasa and its sub%#eriods or
combined St&ira Dasa and -a$amsa Dasa. Also #lease remember
ne$er to go against t&e indication of t&e natal c&art. ,f it
is clearly t&e c&art of a bac&elor t&en #er&a#s one s&ould
not be too entusiastic about #redicting marriageH

,n case of c&ildbirt& , &a$e often obser$ed Saturn to be
eit&er transiting t&e t&%lord or as#ecting t&e t&%lord from
t&e running -iryana S&oola Dasa by t&e s#ecial Jaimini%
as#ects. >lease obser$e t&at in t&is case Saturn is
transitting in Cibra occu#ied by Ju#iter" being t&e t&%lord
from Ceo" t&e running -iryana S&oola Dasa.

.&e #redictions about c&ildren s&ould also be double%c&ecked
(it& t&e ot&er Dasa%systems" and &ere again one s&ould not go
against t&e indication of t&e natal c&art.
