STRUCTURAL SAFETY AND SERVICES

The National Building Code (NBC) is a national instrument that will guide the
regulations for construction activity in the country. The code encompasses all the
aspects vital for safe and orderly building development. The building that does not
satisfy the requirements put forward by the NBC or violates it is bound to suffer penalty,
cancellation of sanction or demolition. plumbing or sanitation code is a set of rules and
regulations imposed by cities or counties. nyone doing wor! on drin!ing water and
sewer or toilet facilities systems are responsible to ma!e the wor! in a specific, safe
manner to avoid accidents and spread of disease. "ater conservation and the health
aspects of plumbing have become important in the construction sector now.
#lumbing has to be attuned to the general design of the building. $any technical
aspects such as water pressure, venting and concepts of wet and dry areas in toilets
have to be loo!ed into in any structure. %ecently, the International Association of
Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO) developed a #lumbing Code for &ndia.
The &ndian #lumbing ssociation (&#), country's ape( body of plumbing professionals,
has launched )*niform #lumbing Code' (*#C).The "orld #lumbing Council's uniform
plumbing code was mended as per &ndian needs and created the code for &ndia.
5.0 STRUCTURAL DESIGN
The structural design of foundation, masonry, timber, plain concrete, reinforced concrete,
pre-stressed concrete and structural steel shall be carried out in accordance with Part-VI
structural design, section-1 loads, section-2 foundation, section-3 wood, section-4 masonry,
section- concrete and section-! steel of "ational #uilding $ode of India ta%ing into
consideration all rele&ant Indian 'tandards prescribed by #ureau of Indian 'tandards

any such alternati&e has been appro&ed, The building materials appro&ed by #,I,', or
any statutory body will form part of the appro&ed building material and technology as

5.&. 'UILDING SERVICES
5.&.1. The Planning design and installation of electrical installations, air
conditioning installation of lifts and escalators can be carried out in accordance with
Part-VIII #uilding 'er&ices, section32 electrical installation, section33 air
conditioning and heating, section- installation of lifts and escalators of "ational
#uilding $ode of India, 4owe&er de&iations from "ational #uilding $ode may be
done as per good 5ngineering practices,

pro&ision for continuous water supply to the solar water heating system, The
building should also ha&e open space on the rooftop, which recei&es direct sun
light, The load bearing capacity of the roof should at least be * %g, per s. m,
-ll new buildings of abo&e said categories must complete installation of solar
water heating systems before obtaining necessary license to commence their
business,
b< 9/isting 'uildings: Installation of 'olar -ssisted /ater 4eating 'ystems in the
e6isting building shall be made mandatory at the time of change of use to abo&e
said category pro&ided there is a system or installation for supplying hot water,
iii< 1apacit: The capacity of solar water heating system to be installed on the building
of different categories shall be decided in consultation with the local bodies, The
recommended minimum capacity shall not be less than 2 litres per day for each
bathroom and %itchen subFect to the condition that ma6imum of *I of the total roof
area is pro&ided with the system,
i&< Specifications: Installation of 'olar -ssisted /ater 4eating 'ystems shall
conform to #I' specification I' 12)33, The solar collectors used in the system shall
ha&e the #I' certification mar%,
