education for the Health Sciences under a new administrative structure - The Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. This consists of the Faculty of Medicine and the School of Nursing. The administrative and academic programs are overseen by the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. New curriculum programs are now established for both the Faculty of Medicine and the School of Nursing.
FACULTY OF MEDICINE
Starting in the academic year 2007/2008, the Faculty of Medicine at Universitas Pelita Harapan developed new academic programs for education of Health care personnel and delivery of health care to the population of Indonesia. In response to National directives, the Faculty of Medicine is engaged in a process of curriculum renewal and development based on sound educational principles and social responsibility. The curriculum follows the National guidelines for a Competency Based Curriculum and international guidelines published under the SPICES guidelines for curriculum renewal. The key principles guiding these changes include: Student centered self directed learning, Problem Based Learning Integrated instruction, small group learning, Community based instruction, early clinical exposure to patients, Systematic clinical education and Applied Assessments of learning. The goals of the program are to produce primary health care physicians who have excellent knowledge, skills and competencies and behaviors to serve society as a competent medical practitioner or the ability to proceed to further education.
The Program for Medical Doctor consists of two components:
The Bachelor of Medicine Program
Following study at UPH for three and a half years (7 semesters), students will graduate as a Bachelor of Medicine. The key principles of learning will follow traditional or authentic Problem Based Learning supplemented by more traditional instruction. Longitudinal courses for practical laboratory experience, clinical skills instruction, early exposure to patients, instruction and opportunities for learning their professional roles with patients, and society. Beginning in the third semester, medical students will be exposed to ambulatory clinics in public institutions as well as in Siloam and other hospitals. They will learn communications skills focused on patients as well as working with other health professionals in the health care system. Assessments will consist of applied knowledge, clinical skills and clinical performance examinations
The Medical Doctor Program
After graduation from the Bachelor of Medicine program, students will engage in 18 months of clinical clerkship at collaborating Teaching Hospitals (Siloam Hospitals, Central Army Hospital; Cilandak Marine Hospital; Police Hospital; Mental Health Hospital (Sanatorium Dharmawangsa) and numerous Puskesmas (Primary Health Care Center). The content and framework of the clerkship will follow the guidelines established by Forum Kommunikasi of private universities. Assessments will consist of applied knowledge, clinical skills and clinical performance assessments. Satisfactory completion will allow them to sit the National Examinations for graduation as a Medical Doctor.
The essential features of this new program include:
A five-year program leading to the degree of Medical Doctor. Movement towards English as a medium of instruction. An innovative curriculum that focuses on integration of basic and clinical sciences, small group learning and opportunities of authentic Problem Based Learning where students learn basic sciences in context of clinical cases. From the second year, students will engage with patients in a community setting and will 213 learn basic and practical clinical skills including critical thinking and clinical reasoning skills. Clinical clerkship will take place over 18 months in teaching hospitals. Presently seven different hospitals are used for clinical teaching and it is anticipated that more will be recruited from the surrounding communities.
The focus of instruction is practical application of knowledge and skills in the clinical setting. The instruction and learning will be experiential and based on patients and patient care activities.
