Lab Report 1: Core Dimensions, Liquid Density, and Acid Test.

The purpose of this lab was to get us familiarized with some of the instruments used for making
measurements that are important for petroleum engineers.
The first part of the lab consisted in measuring two to three core samples provided in the lab. For
this part of the lab, a caliper was used. Each member of the team took different measurements for
length and diameter. After the measurements were done, an average was calculated.
The second part of the lab was the density measurement, which was divided into two different
parts. The first parts consisted on using the density meter and with it, calculate the density of tap
water at room temperature. Again, several measurements were made and an average was
calculated. The second part involved the use of a pycnometer. The process consisted in
measuring the weight of a 50 mL pycnometer, then fill it up with water and measure its weight
again once it was full of water. After obtaining the required measurements, we used the
following equation to calculate the density of water:

The results for the core measurement section of the experiment are presented in Table 1.

For the density measurement using a density meter, the results are shown in Table 2.

As for the pycnometer part of the density measurement, the values obtained for the mass of the
container when it was full was 72.8g and when it was empty, its weight was 23.0g. Then
plugging in these values into equation (1) we obtained the density of the water to have a value of
0.996 g/mL.
From performing this experiment, I have learned that there are various methods for calculating
the densities of different fluids and that each one will yield a different answer from the other
method but the answer wont vary by much. The answers are pretty close to each other in value.
Using the density measurement was more accurate than using the pycnometer simply because in
the pycnometer there are many factors that affect the calculation. Another thing learned in the lab
was to accurately use and read a caliper to the nearest thousandth of an inch. This will prove
useful when we are required to use a caliper in the future.
