FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
CARRIE THEALL

We are so pleased to welcome Katie Tang to the Alamance Partnership for Children. Katie was born and raised in
southern California and graduated from Bryman College in 1995. She worked as a youth minister for 18 years in
California and also at Our Lady of Grace in Greensboro. Katie and her husband Derek were married in August 2006
which brought her to North Carolina. They have four chil-
dren: Marisa, aged six, Shayna and Joseph, aged four and
Simone, aged two.
Katies hobbies include cooking and baking to keep her forev-
er hungry husband and son fed, sewing, letterboxing, travel-
ing with her family, and spending way too many late nights
on Pinterest looking for recipes and sewing projects.
Katies responsibilities include managing the office, assisting
the executive director and finance director, program support
for all of the Partnerships many activities and keeping the
staff smiling with her sunny disposition!
Happy New Year!
Another fiscal year is about to come
to an end for the Alamance Part-
nership for Children. For us, this
feels like the end of a year and
the beginning of one with the
prospect of new funding and dif-
ferent projects. When I look
back and reflect on 2013-2014, I
am pleased to know that we are
serving more children and fami-
lies than ever in the history of
this partnership. More children
are showing up ready to begin
their school years and more par-
ents are realizing the importance
of the first years in their chil-
drens lives.
In the coming year, we are plan-
ning to increase our collaborative
efforts within the community as
well as with other Smart Start
partnerships. Knowing that our
Smart Start dollars stand little
chance of increasing in the near
future, it is imperative that we
continue to look for alternative
funding streams and new and
creative ways to partner around
our mission. Thankfully, the
staff and board members of the
Partnership are incredibly dedi-
cated to this goal. In addition,
we are working on better ways of
tracking the progress of our chil-
dren here in Alamance County.
We want to make sure that every

dollar spent is getting our com-
munity the return on the invest-
ment to early childhood develop-
ment.
So in the next few months, stay
tuned to learn how we are going
to continue to grow and serve our
youngest citizens. And as al-
ways, we welcome involvement
from our community in the way
of board or committee service.
Please contact the Partnership if
you want to become more in-
volved in the services we pro-
vide.

Dolly Partons Imaginaton Library
In 1996, Dolly Parton launched a reading program to beneft the children of her home county in east Tennessee. Dolly wanted to foster a love of
reading among her countys preschool children and their families. She wanted children to be excited about books and to feel the magic that
books can create. In Alamance County, eligible children receive a free book in the mail per month untl they reach their ffh birthday. The
books, distributed by the Dolly Parton Foundaton, are carefully selected to be age-appropriate and to deliver positve, developmentally im-
portant skill opportunites for children. Alamance Partnership for Children is currently providing this service to the Eastlawn, Newlin, Andrews,
Haw River, Grove Park, Pleasant Grove, and North Graham school zones. To be eligible, a child between the ages of birth to fve years of age
needs to reside within one of these districts.
Please mail in the completed enrollment form above, if you are interested in enrolling your child.

Early Experiences
In Life Mater

Over the past year the Alliance has made a conscious
efort to focus on trainings and actvites that raise
awareness of the impact of trauma on the development
of young children. Experiences that occur in childhood,
whether positve or adverse, afect every aspect of a
childs development and can set them on a life trajectory
towards positve mental and physical health or the devel-
opment of mental and physical health difcultes.

In young children trauma may be any incident that over-
whelms the childs ability to cope. Children are more
vulnerable to trauma because of their size, age and de-
pendence. Extremely high stress environments such as
those caused by domestc violence, homelessness, abuse
and neglect, caregiver substance abuse or untreated
mental illness, community violence, etc. can be toxic to
the developing brain. These experiences increase the
risk for poor outcomes for young children. There are,
however, protectve factors that can bufer and protect
the brain from these damaging insults. The most im-
portant of these is a safe, stable and supportve relaton-
ship with a caring adult. For more informaton on ad-
verse childhood experiences and their afect on a childs
development visit the Harvard Center on the Developing
Child at htp://developingchild.harvard.edu/

Got Health Insurance?
Do you and your staf have health insurance? Are you concerned with the
cost of insurance? Confused by what you hear about the Afordable Care
Act (Obamacare) and the Marketplace? You are not alone! The Early Edu-
cators and ACA CONNECT Project can help.
If your child care center/organizaton has staf or families that stll have not
acquired insurance, have them visit the health insurance Marketplace web-
site, www.healthcare.gov, or contact our ofce for free one-on-one guidance. Our counselors are available to
educate and raise awareness about the insurance optons available on the Marketplace. Additonally, we can
help consumers fnd out if they qualify for insurance afordability programs including a premium tax credit, cost
sharing reductons, Medicaid and/or the Childrens Health Insurance Program. We also conduct outreach and
training sessions, some of which may count toward contnuing educaton units (CEUs).
Some may think that they cannot aford health coverage or believe its cheaper to do without. Yet studies have
shown that the uninsured generally put of medical treatment untl its too late to treat their ailments, which can
result in more serious and costly medical issues. Having insurance means getng that tckle in your throat
checked out before it turns into something worse that may be hard to treat and require several days out of work.
Health coverage not only helps protect your physical well being, but also keeps the contnuity of care in your
classrooms as well.
November 15, 2014 marks the beginning of the second open enrollment period, which allows consumers to se-
lect insurance plans for 2015. Now is the tme to prepare yourself. Contact the Early Educators and ACA CON-
NECT Program if you have questons, 919-967-3272 or cac@childcareservices.org. Or, if you are interested in
atending a training on the ACA, please let the staf at Alamance Partnership for Children know at 336-513-0063.
