Most students are able to recognise typical American features in Films and series. A flag, New Yorks skyline or its Yellow Cabs can be obvious American clues. Certain Holidays, celebrations and sporting events can also be a distinguishing factor. E.g. the celebration of Halloween and American football features are commonly known.
This lesson is about triggering pre-knowledge, recognizing the movie genres and building up to something that matters to them. The homework assignment is to compose their personal movie and series top 5 lists. By making an effort to distinguish the American elements in their top fives, they learn about the American legacy and its effect on them.
Lesson 2 The American Dream
All people dream their dreams and are full of hopes. Americas notion of being the land of opportunity is rooted in its historical beginnings and still prevails. In this lesson pupils explore its meaning, its roots and its imperfection. This exploration is also taken on the level of comprehensive reading tactics. They need to search for the gist of a text. By doing so they can increase their confidence in reading outside their comfort zone.
Lesson 3 High school This lesson builds up to a comparison between a typical American high school and their own school. The American extra curricular activity examples and other features including labeling common American stereotypes (e.g. jocks, nerds) in their own environment, provide pupils with material to contemplate on. Its about finding out how they perceive things and what they find important.
Lesson 4 Reflection Reflection on the American legacy is one of the goals of this project. On the site a combined theory element is provided for with A) examples on how to express your opinion in English and B) a brief reflection explanation.
As reflection can be perceived as a hard and intangible task for the students, guiding questions are provided in each lesson. These enhance their understanding by exploring the American influences in things that matter to them. Furthermore, reflecting is incorporated in the output components making a digital timeline and scrapbook.
In this lesson an overview of the project and expected output and rubric is given. This is when they first sign up for both WEB based application and start their group work on the scrapbook. The timeline assignment is individual, since this reflects on their personal encounters and events in life. (E.g. when they had their first Big Mac or saw their favorite movies of all times.)
