Queridos Lectores:
El llamado a ser jvenes discpulos de Jess hoy
La Quinceaera es una de las celebraciones ms polmicas den-
tro de la pastoral hispana. Por un lado, algunos fruncen el ceo
y preguntan: Por qu se tiene que celebrar una Misa para la
Quinceaera, casi como si fuera un octavo sacramento? Por otro
lado, los pastoralistas ven en la Quinceaera una gran oportunidad
para acercar a la celebrada y a sus amigos a la vida de la Iglesia: es
una oportunidad para catequizar a la quinceaera y a sus amigos.
Pero qu significa la celebracin de la Quinceaera, cul es
su valor intrnseco y por qu es tan importante que las familias
se armen de valor y pidan al prroco o al vicario parroquial que
presida la Misa?
A pesar de la polmica y el misterio que rodea la celebracin
de la Quinceaera, se puede sealar que esta celebracin: 1) Tiene
races profundas en la tradicin indgena de los pueblos latino-
americanos, sobre todo en el mexicano. 2) Tiene que ver con la
familia y su deseo de presentar a su hija ante la comunidad. 3)
Conecta a la familia con la Iglesia de un modo natural que surge
de la religiosidad catlica popular.
A la luz de estas tres realidades, y de la visin misionera del
Papa Francisco, se puede ver la celebracin de la Quinceaera
como una accin misionera que busca fortalecer la fe catlica de
las familias y su pertenencia a la Iglesia. Tambin se puede asumir
que el valor de presentar a su hija a la comunidad no depende del
lujo o del gasto que se realice, sino del amor y respeto que los
padres, padrinos y amigos tienen por la celebrada y por el don de
la fe que han heredado de sus antepasados.
Esperamos que los artculos sobre la familia y la quinceaera,
adems de las recomendaciones musicales incluidas en este ejem-
plar, les ayuden a enfrentar ciertos retos como un verdadero acto
de cario pastoral misionero que fortalece a las familias en la
fe, incluyendo a la quinceaera y sus amigos en el llamado a ser
jvenes discpulos de Jess hoy.

Dear friends,
The call to be young disciples of Jesus in todays world
The quinceaera celebration is one of the most
controversial in Hispanic ministry. On the one
hand, many priests ask the question: why should
the quinceaera include the celebration of the
Mass, as though it were a sort of eighth sacra-
ment? On the other hand, many see it as a great
opportunity to bring the celebrated young woman
and her friends closer to Christ and the faith
community; it as an opportunity to catechize the
quinceaera and her friends.
But what is the real meaning of this celebration;
where does its intrinsic value lay; why is it so impor-
tant for families to have the courage to ask the
pastor or the parish vicar to celebrate the Mass?
With all the controversy and mystery surround-
ing the celebration of the quinceaera, three things
can be said with certainty: 1) it has profound roots
in the indigenous tradition of Latin America, par-
ticularly in Mexico; 2) it involves the family and their
desire to present their daughter to the community;
3) it connects the family to the Church in a natural
way that arises from popular Catholic practices.
In light of these three factors as well as the mis-
sionary spirit of Pope Francis, it can be said that
the quinceaera celebration is a pastoral practice
that seeks to strengthen the Catholic identity of
families and their belonging in the Church. One
might add that the value of a family presenting
their daughter to the community does not depend
on the extravagance of the celebration or the
expenses incurred, but in the love and respect that
the parents, godparents, and friends have for the
young woman being celebrated and for the gift of
faith they inherited from their ancestors.
This issue of Liturgia y Cancin includes articles
on the family and the celebration of the quincea-
era. Our hope is that you find them helpful in
viewing the celebration of the quinceaera as a
missionary work of love that strengthens the faith of
families and invites the quinceaera and her friends
to a closer relationship with Christ and his Church.

Qu tena de extraordinario el primo hermano de Jess?
Que era una persona sumamente sencilla aun cuando su
historia personal no tena nada de ordinario: naci de unos
padres muy ancianos. Su padre, por dudar de la promesa
de Dios qued mudo hasta el da en que naci su hijo y, al
recuperar el habla, se puso a proclamar un cntico de ben-
dicin al Dios de Israel, por haber visitado y redimido a su
pueblo. La gente seguramente conoca esa historia y per-
maneci atenta a Juan Bautista, esperando el momento en
que se manifestara como el enviado de Dios.
Juan fue un hombre nico en su tiempo, despus de todo,
haban pasado 400 aos en los que el pueblo de Israel no
haba reconocido un profeta autntico en medio de ellos.
Juan, como los profetas de Israel, es elegido por Dios desde
el vientre de su madre y es enviado con una misin especial:
preparar el camino del Mesas.
Lo radical de Juan no slo fue el hecho de que vesta una
piel de camello y coma plantas silvestres, sino que l mis-
mo se dej transformar por Dios a fn de profetizar no slo
con su vida, sino con su palabra. Ambas fueron una crtica
fuerte a las autoridades religiosas, pues a stas les record la
necesidad de enderezar los caminos de su propia vida. Ante
el poder poltico, Juan impuso el valor moral, pues le dijo a
Herodes que no era lcito tener por esposa a su cuada. Por
tal denuncia, Juan enfrent la muerte y con ella certifc que
en realidad era un profeta enviado de Dios, pues todos los
profetas mueren por su propio mensaje.
Juan tena bien claro quin era, por tal motivo no le im-
port vestir la piel de camello o vivir en el desierto, sin nada.
Llam discpulos para invitar a la gente a la conversin, pero
al encuentro con Jess l mismo les dice que vayan tras l,
pues es l a quien esperan.
Juan fue extraordinario no slo por haber presentado a
Jess como lo que era quien habra de quitar el pecado del
mundo, sino por haber reconocido el momento de hacerse
a un lado y dejar que se realizara plenamente el plan de Dios
y no convertirse en un estorbo para l.

Refection
What was so extraordinary about Jesus cousin? His
extraordinariness lay precisely in the fact that he was
such an ordinary person, even though he came from a
background that was far from ordinary. His parents were
quite old when he was born. Because his father doubted
Gods promise (to give them a child), he remained mute
until the day his son was born. When he was finally able
to speak again, he sang a canticle of blessing to the God
of Israel, for he [had] visited and brought redemption to
his people. The people of the time were most likely aware
of this account and kept a close eye on John the Baptist,
waiting for the moment when he would be made known
as the messenger of God.
For his time, John was a unique man. After all, it had
been four hundred years since the people of Israel had
recognized a true prophet in their midst. In the same way
as most of the prophets of Israel, John is chosen by God
from his mothers womb and is sent with a special mis-
sion: to prepare the way of the Lord.
John was radical, not only because he wore camel
skins and ate wild plants, but because he allowed himself
to be transformed by God in order to prophesy. He testi-
fied through his words and his life. And both were severely
criticized by the religious authorities. John imposed moral
values on the political powers of his day, even going so
far as to tell Herod that it was unlawful to marry his sister-
in-law. For this reprimand. John faced death and, thus,
substantiated the claims that he truly was a prophet sent
by God.
Since John knew exactly who he was, he did not worry
about where he lived or how he dressed. He called disci-
ples and invited people to convert but when Jesus came,
John himself said that they must follow him because he
was the one for whom they had waited.
John was extraordinary not only for introducing Jesus
the lamb that would take away the sins of the worldbut
for realizing when it was time to step aside.

Actualmente, se oyen muchas voces que gritan en el de-
sierto, invitndonos a imponer una nueva moda, la de ser
nicos, pues Dios no nos ha creado en serie. No tendremos
que vestir pieles de camello, como Juan, pero s tendremos
que asumir una postura proftica ante cosas que son comunes,
aunque no por eso, sean justas. Nuestra vida cristiana debe
ser en s misma una denuncia a todo aquello que nos aparta
de Dios, pues tambin nos separa de la familia y de quienes
nos acompaan en nuestro caminar en la fe.
Preguntas para refexionar
Cules seran los profetas de nuestro tiempo?
Por qu ya no nos maravillamos tanto ante una vida que
viene al mundo?
El nombre que damos a nuestros hijos dice mucho de no-
sotros, por qu?
Oracin
Dios nuestro, te pedimos que nos concedas la valenta de
un apstol para que, siguiendo el ejemplo de Juan Bautista,
vivamos tu palabra y la prediquemos con nuestra vida dia-
ria. T que vives y reinas por los siglos de los siglos. Amn.

A la pregunta, quin es Jess? Pedro y Pablo respondie-
ron con la propia vida. Dos hombres con un contexto muy
diferente dieron una respuesta singular a Dios: ambos cam-
biaron su vida radicalmente y se entregaron a una misin
que les fue encomendada por Jess. Pedro neg conocerlo,
y Pablo crea dar gloria a Dios matando a sus seguidores.
Ambos cambiaron su vida a partir de un encuentro personal
con Jess. Este encuentro tan personal los llev a vivir un
encuentro muy intenso con su comunidad de fe y as reini-
ciaron la misin que les haba sido encomendada.
Todos somos Pedro en el sentido de que todos amamos
a Dios y decimos que nada nos har negar su santo nom-
bre. No obstante, en ciertas experiencias de la vida, cuando
nuestras mismas convicciones nos piden dar testimonio de
que conocemos a Jess, de que celebramos su presencia, de
que lo recibimos en la Eucarista, negamos conocer a Jess,
o bien, nos negamos a seguirlo. Pedro reconoci a Jess
mucho antes de la resurreccin; fue precisamente en el mo-
mento de su negacin. Los relatos de la Pasin nos sealan
que Pedro se da cuenta de lo que haba dicho Jess con re-
specto a la negacin y, al reconocer que eso haba sucedido,
Pedro mismo llora, no slo su traicin, sino porque en el
cumplimiento de la palabra de Jess se da cuenta de que
Nowadays we hear many voices calling in the desert,
inviting us to begin a new way of life, to be unique, since,
after all, God didnt create us all from the same mold.
This doesnt mean that we need to walk around wearing
animal skins like John, but we would do well to develop
a more prophetic attitude. The way we live as Christians
should clearly show that we want no part in anything that
might separate us from God, our family, or those who
accompany us on our faith journey.

Who might be considered prophets of our time?
Why doesnt a new life coming into the world amaze as
much as it once did?
Why do the names we give our children say so much
about who we are?
Prayer
Our God, we ask that you grant us the courage of an
apostle so that, following John the Baptists example, we
might live your word and preach it with our everyday lives.

When asked Who is Jesus? Peter and Paul responded
with their lives. Two men from very different backgrounds
responded in the same way to Gods callboth radically
changed their lives and gave themselves to the mission
to which Jesus had called them. Peter denied knowing
him and Paul believed that he was giving glory to God
by killing his followers. Both changed their lives after hav-
ing a personal encounter with Jesus. This very personal
encounter led them to have a very intense interaction with
their faith community and, thus, they resumed the mission
with which they had been entrusted.
We are all a little like Peter in the sense that we all
profess our love to God and claim that nothing could
ever cause us to deny his holy name. Yet there are times
in life when our convictions require us to affirm that we
know Jesus, but we deny knowing him, or maybe we
just decide not to follow him. Peter recognized Jesus
long before the resurrectionin the very moment that
he denied knowing him. The accounts of the Passion
reveal that Peter realized what Jesus had said concern-
ing Peters denial was true, and he immediately wept over
his betrayal. In this fulfillment of Jesus words, Peter real-
ized that Jesus truly was God and that everything Jesus

A Pedro, el ngel le dice que se cia la tnica, que se

or. A Pablo, una voz de lo alto le pregunta: Por qu me
persigues? La respuesta de ambos es contundente. La
tradicin cuenta que Pedro muri crucifcado, pero se senta
tan indigno de morir como su maestro que pidi ser cru-
cifcado cabeza abajo. Pablo, muri degollado, despus de
haber formado comunidades y de haber animado a los pas-
tores a ser feles a Jesucristo.
Despus de una misin tan plenamente vivida, ambos es-
peraban este encuentro con Jess, con el Mesas que haban
esperado. Slo as podemos entender la serenidad y la hu-
mildad de Pablo al reconocer que est listo para recibir la
corona, no slo la del martirio, sino la del reino celestial.
La vida de estos grandes apstoles debe motivarnos a
abrazar la misin que Jess nos ha encomendado, aun cuan-
do nos hayamos negado en ms de una ocasin a realizarla
o bien, hayamos sido un obstculo para quienes desean ser
feles al Seor Jess.

Por qu crees que Pedro se siente indigno de morir como
su maestro?
Qu palabras te gustara decir cuando llegue tu encuentro
con Dios?
Oracin
Seor, te pedimos que nos ayudes a ser apstoles de tu rei-
no, que prediquemos tu palabra con nuestra vida y que ella
sea un ejemplo para que cada da haya ms personas deci-
didas a seguirte o ms an, a consagrar su vida a la evange-
lizacin de los pueblos. T que vives y reinas por los siglos
de los siglos. Amn.

El padre Horacio Camarena fue un gran maestro para m. Sus
clases de flosofa eran muy buenas y cuando escriba poesa,
lo haca muy bien. Una de sus frases, respecto al Apocalipsis,
con referencia a Mara, deca: Dentro de ti, ya amaneci.

In Acts of the Apostles, an angel of the Lord tells Peter
to put on his belt and sandals. Then he instructs him to
put on his cloak and follow him. Paul, on the other hand,
hears a voice from heaven asking him, Why do you per-
secute me? Both of their responses were quite convinc-
ing. Tradition claims that Peter was crucified, but because
he felt unworthy to die in the same way as his teacher, he
asked that he be crucified upside down. And Paul, after
building up various communities and encouraging the
people to be faithful to Jesus, was beheaded.
After living their mission to the fullest, both men awaited
this final encounter with Jesus, with the Messiah for whom
they had hoped for so long. And this is the key to under-
standing Pauls serenity and humility when he realized he
was ready to receive his crown, not only the crown of
martyrdom but also that of the heavenly kingdom.
The lives of these great apostles should motivate us to
embrace the mission with which Jesus has entrusted us,
even though we sometimes neglect to do our part.

Lord, we ask that you help us become apostles that

Father Horacio Camarena was one of my favorite teach-
ers. His philosophy classes were always very interesting
and he was quite talented at writing poetry. Referring to
Mary in the book of Revelation, he used to say, God has
already arisen inside you.
Anytime new life is created, God is therewhether it
be in Marys womb, with the life of the Savior, or in the

que para Dios, toda vida es bendita, no hay vida sana y enfer-
ma, o hijos legtimos o ilegtimos. Para Dios hay hijos y punto.
Nuestra cultura, a pesar de todo su machismo, tiene en
alta estima a la mujer madre. La mam es sagrada y na-
die la ofende. La mam merece el cielo, sin importar cmo
nos haya trado al mundo o los errores que haya cometido.
Si nuestra madre sufri por nosotros lo indecible, nosotros
haremos lo mismo por ella. Amor con amor se paga. Si
mam no tuvo lo necesario en esta vida, pues pedimos a
Dios que le conceda el cielo en la otra, porque era una je-
fecita linda. La mam no slo nos habl de Dios con sus
palabras, sino que tambin lo hizo con su vida, sus velado-
ras, sus altares, sus novenas, sus rosarios, sus bendiciones,
sus caricias. Mam, por el slo hecho de habernos trado al
mundo, merece ir al cielo.
Mara e Isabel son dos mujeres de fe, valientes, decididas
y con un amor de madre extremo. Isabel, ya en su vejez,
engendra a Juan Bautista. Asume el riesgo de ser madre y
lo hace muy bien, porque sabe que Dios no la dejar sola.
Mara, que tambin lleva un nio en su vientre, sabe a quin
recurrir para evitar que una cultura machista y ciega al valor
de la maternidad, le echara en cara que estaba embarazada
aun sin casarse con Jos. Qu maravilloso encuentro de dos
grandes madres!
Mara, madre de Jess y madre nuestra, fue llevada al
cielo. La tradicin oriental cuenta que no muri, sino que
simplemente se durmi. La Iglesia declar que Mara fue
llevada en cuerpo y alma al cielo. Esto nos garantiza la resu-
rreccin y un lugar en la plenitud del reino de Dios. Mara,
como la primera discpula que encarn en su vida y en su
vientre a Dios, es la primera en gozar la plenitud del reino
y en ser coronada con las estrellas, porque dentro de ella ya
amaneci y en su gloria han renacido los pueblos de la tierra.

womb of any other mother. The biblical text doesnt make
any reference to the spouse of the pregnant woman.
This just shows that where God is concerned, all life is
blessed regardless of whether the baby is healthy or sick,
legitimate or illegitimate. In Gods eyes, all are his children.
In spite of machismo tendencies, our culture holds
mothers in high esteem. Mothers are sacred and deserve
heavenit doesnt matter what mistakes they have made.
If our mother suffered the indescribable for us, we should
do the same for her. Love begets love. If our mother lacked
necessities in this life, we would ask God to fulfill her every
need in the next. A mother uses not only words; she also
shows us God with her life, her candles and altars, her
novenas, her rosaries, her blessings, and her caresses.
Our mother deserves to go to heaven, if only for the simple
act of bringing us into this world.
Mary and Elizabeth are two very strong, determined
women of faith. They are true examples of just how much a
mother loves her child. In her old age, Elizabeth conceives
John the Baptist. Despite the risks of such a pregnancy,
she trusts in God. Mary, who is also with child, knows who
to turn to in order to avoid the shame and ridicule of a chau-
vinistic society that is blind to the marvels of motherhood.
Sadly, all they see is someone who got pregnant before
she was married to Joseph. What an amazing encounter
between two great mothers that must have been!
Mary, the mother of Jesus and our Mother, was taken
up to heaven. Eastern tradition believes that she didnt
die but that she simply fell asleep. The Catholic Church
declared that Mary was taken up, body and soul, into
heavenly glory. As the first disciple that embodied God,
in her life and her womb, she is the first to enter in to the
fullness of the kingdom and to be crowned with the stars.
God arose in her life and all the peoples of the earth have
been reborn in her glory.
How is it significant for you that Mary is in heaven?
How can you show more appreciation for the gift of
motherhood?
When was the last time you prayed for your mother?
Prayer
Lord, we ask that, just as you took Mary, your mother, up
to heaven, so you would also take us with you, to rejoice
fully in you, who reign for ever and ever. Amen.

Like Olive Shoots
Reflexionar sobre la familia es un ejercicio que no deja
cansancio alguno, por el contrario, recrea y genera una
sensacin de descanso que, al mismo tiempo, revitaliza
el espritu, la mente y el cuerpo. Este resultado no slo se
obtiene cuando se tiene una familia, tambin lo logra quien
lamentablemente no naci en el seno de una familia consti-
tuida pero que desea formar una familia. Este ejercicio
debe ser tambin una prctica frecuente que se traduce en
oracin personal, la cual va fortaleciendo nuestro ser inte-
gral y, al mismo tiempo, va reafirmando nuestra relacin
con nuestro Dios Creador. Cuando pensamos que Dios cre
la familia para tener un refugio donde hospedarse con toda
su majestad, con todo su poder, no podemos menos que
sentir el corazn saltar dentro de nuestro pecho al punto de
casi llorar, pero de agradecimiento por tener una familia.
No slo es una reaccin emocional sino una respuesta a
esa relacin de vida que se desarrolla entre la criatura y su
creador, consciente de nuestros errores y sus consecuencias.
Tambin vemos a otros que han sufrido la mala decisin de
sus progenitores de romper o no construir ese espacio para
que Dios resida con toda su majestad.
Dios todopoderoso calific la creacin del hombre y
la mujer como muy buena porque mir en la unin de
estas criaturas poco inferior a los ngeles (Salmo 8, 6) el
potencial de su presencia permanente en el mundo creado.
Dios puede estar presente en una manada de leones u otros
animales como vigilante de su creacin, gozndose de su
obra y viendo que cumplen con lo que les fue encargado
a cada especie por el mismo Creador. Pero la presencia
de Dios es diferente en el hogar que est diseado para el
amor de los esposos, para la creacin de nueva vida y la
formacin posterior de los hijos. Esta presencia en el hogar,
a diferencia de la presencia en las otras criaturas, es inte-
ractiva: Dios habla y escucha; sus hijos oyen su voz; elevan
su clamor y tienen la libertad de elegir seguirlo o dejarlo.
Reflecting on family is an exercise that shouldnt leave
us feeling tired; on the contrary, it should renew us and
generate a sense of rest and, at the same time, revitalize
our spirit, mind, and body. This happens not only to those
with families; it is also true for those who do not have the
good fortune to be born in the heart of a well-settled fam-
ily, but who hope to have a family of their own eventually.
This exercise should also be a frequent practice that leads
to personal prayer, enriching our very being while reaf-
firming our relationship with our creator God. When we
remember that God created the family so that we might
have a refuge where he can dwell in all his majesty, with all
his power, we can do no less than allow our hearts to leap
within our chest, to the point of shedding tears, tears of
joy for having a family. It is not merely an emotional reac-
tion but a response to the life relationship that develops
between a creator and his creation, fully conscious of our
mistakes and their consequences. We also see others
who have suffered their parents poor decisions to tear
down or neglect to build such a space where God can
reside in all his majesty.
God Almighty considered the creation of man and
woman very good because he had the possibility of
remaining permanently in his newly created world through
the union of these two beings who were little less than
the angels (Psalm 8:6). God may be present in a pride of
lions or other group of animals, watching over his creation,
rejoicing in his works, and ensuring that they are doing that
to which they have been called by their Creator. But the
presence of God is different in a home that is designed for
the love of spouses, for the creation of new life, and, later,
for the formation of children. His presence in the home,
unlike among other creatures, is interactive: God speaks
and listens; his children hear his voice; they cry out to him;
and they have the freedom to choose to follow him or to

su voz, ni leer su palabra, Dios sigue buscando refugiarse
en ese hogar.
El amor de los esposos en cada espacio donde se
encuentra, en cada tiempo que existe, construye un Arca de
Alianza donde Dios reside para ser adorado en espritu y
verdad. El Seor se manifiesta en ese amor que ha prometi-
do fidelidad, lealtad, continuidad y opta por estar abierto a
la vida hasta el fin de su existencia. El amor conyugal que
genera el amor filial de la misma intensidad, unido al amor
perfecto de Dios por sus hijos, es el inicio de la felicidad
eterna que nos ha garantizado nuestro Seor Jesucristo.
Cuando se tiene conciencia de esta realidad en los hogares,
no hay tormenta ni fuego que pueda destruirlo, a pesar de
las vicisitudes de la vida diaria que nos hacen sentir des-
protegidos, abandonados, angustiados, ansiosos, con ganas
de abandonar y buscar soluciones alejadas del auxilio de
nuestro Dios.
La promesa de Dios de proteger a la pareja y su descen-
dencia por generaciones son recordadas, citadas y recitadas
en su palabra la cual leemos en la Santa Biblia. Y por qu
no reunirnos como familia a escuchar a Dios hablndonos,
gozndose en nuestra unin y quedndose con nosotros en
el hogar? Leemos en el Salmo 128, 14:
Feliz t que honras al Seor y le eres obediente.
Comers del fruto de tu trabajo. Sers feliz y te ir bien.
En la intimidad de tu hogar, tu mujer ser como una vid
cargada de uvas;
tus hijos, alrededor de tu mesa, sern como brotes de olivo.
As bendecir el Seor al hombre que le honra.
Nos preguntamos por qu como brotes de olivo? El
olivo es un rbol propio de las cuencas mediterrneas que se
conoce desde pocas primitivas. Es un rbol desapercibido,
comparado con la esbeltez de otros rboles, representando
humildad y modestia, con hojas persistentes. El olivo re-
presenta bblicamente un signo de renovacin de la alianza
primitiva. Los brotes de olivo en torno a la mesa del Seor
significan la esperanza y la paz, levantadas en medio de los
desiertos de esta tierra. Esa es la promesa para aquellos que
obedecen y siguen al Seor. Al mismo tiempo, la promesa
de esperanza y paz nos adhiere como familia a la gran
familia de Dios, la Iglesia, a la cual pertenecemos y en la
cual tambin, como ramas de olivo, mantenemos la fidelidad
permanentemente. En palabras de San Agustn: Ningn
hombre cuerdo opinar contra la razn; ningn cristiano
contra la Escritura; nadie que ame la paz opinar contra la
Iglesia. Y esta fidelidad a la Palabra de Dios y a su Iglesia
trae la felicidad, la abundancia de nuestras empresas (cfr.

what his children decide. In other words, if, in their free will,
they choose not to listen to his voice or read his word, God
continues to seek refuge in their home.
The love that a married couple shares, in every place,
in every time, builds an ark of the covenant where God
dwells, where he can be worshipped in spirit and truth.
The Lord manifests himself in this love that has prom-
ised to be faithful, loyal, and never-ending, this love that
chooses to accept life until the end of their lives. Conjugal
love that produces brotherly love of the same intensity,
along with Gods perfect love for his children, is the begin-
ning of the eternal happiness that our Lord Jesus Christ
has guaranteed for us. When we are aware of this reality,
there is no storm or fire that can destroy it, despite the
difficulties of daily life that might make us feel unprotected,
abandoned, anguished, anxious, and on the verge of
giving up or looking for solutions that are separated from
Gods help.
Gods promise of protection for the couple and its
future descendants is remembered and recorded in his
wordthe Holy Bible. Why wouldnt we join as a family
to hear God speaking to us, rejoicing in our unity, and
abiding with us in our home? In Psalm 128:14 we read:
Happy are all who fear the Lord, who walk in the ways of God.
What your hands provide you will enjoy; you will be happy
and prosper:
Like a fruitful vine your wife within your home,
Like olive plants your children around your table.
Just so will they be blessed who fear the Lord.
We might ask, why olive plants? The olive tree is native
to the Mediterranean region and has been around since
primitive times. It is easily overlooked when compared with
the grandeur of other trees, thus demonstrating its humility
and modesty, yet its leaves are persistent. Biblically, olive
plants are a sign of the renewal of the ancient covenant.
Olive plants around the Lords table signify hope and peace
rising from the deserts of this earth. They represent the
promise of hope and peace for those who obey and fol-
low the Lord and bind us as a family to Gods familythe
Churchto which we belong and in which we also, as olive
plants, remain faithful. In the words of Saint Augustine no
sane man shall opine against reason, no Christian against
Scripture; no one who loves peace shall opine against the
Church (cf. Las Parbolas de la Iglesia. Antonio Trobajo
Daz. Madrid, Spain: Editorial Biblioteca Autores Cristianos,
1997). And this faithfulness to Gods word and his Church
brings joy and abundance to all our endeavors.
Reading these truths confirms and reaffirms our
adherence to Gods plan for the world and assures us
of the meaning of family unity. When our children grow

rencia al plan de Dios para este mundo, y nos da la seguri-
dad del sentido de la unin familiar. Cuando nuestros hijos
crecen conociendo la verdad de Dios se alejan los temores
de ruptura familiar, de separacin de los padres, disminuy-
en las hostilidades que pueden surgir en toda convivencia
humana o, por lo menos, se entienden como reacciones
transitorias en las que siempre vence la verdad. Mantener
develado el sentido de familia a la luz de la Palabra de
Dios nos aleja de las mentiras que nos presentan a diario la

en el nacimiento de un nuevo miembro, en la muerte terre-
nal de otro, la palabra nos acompaa y habita entre nosotros
de manera activa, viva, no para consolarnos sino para
impulsarnos a seguir el camino de la vida en la presencia
del Seor. Jess es la Palabra de Dios hecha carne, pero no
deja de ser Palabra o verbo, de manera que al leer la palabra
traemos a nuestra vista, a nuestros odos y a nuestra con-
ciencia la presencia real de Jess, para alejar de nosotros la
soledad, el temor de que Dios no me oye, que est ocupado
en otras cosas ms importantes. Traer a Jess a nuestros
hogares, a travs de las lecturas bblicas, es garanta de su
presencia que es sanacin, liberacin, proteccin y certeza
de su atencin exclusiva, sin apuros, sin interrupciones. La
tierra seca no es fecunda, debe ser regada para recibir los
nutrientes de manera adecuada, as nuestro espritu debe ser
regado con la Palabra de Dios, que nos permitir descubrir
lo fecundo de nuestras vidas a la luz de su palabra.
Hemos heredado la tendencia a tener la Biblia en los
hogares como un adorno sobre una mesa, abierta en una
ilustracin artstica que de vez en cuando se desempolva;
sin embargo, el hbito de leerla como familia no ha pe-

Amigo lector, tengamos el propsito de empezar a leer la

Se puede comenzar con los salmos, o con los Evangelios,
con la certeza que Dios cumple sus promesas, especial-
mente cuando dice el Salmo 33: Gusten y vean que bueno

up knowing these truths, fear of families breaking up or
parents divorcing is diminished. The animosity that often
arises whenever two (or more) people live together is
reduced, or, at least, there is better understanding when
conflicts do occur and awareness that the truth always
wins. Unveiling the meaning of family in light of the word
of God shields us from the lies with which we are daily
confronted through television, movies, and so many other
means. Such interferences portray new alternatives to
the family model that are distinct from the family model
designed by God.
At all times in our family life, the good, the bad, in times
of abundance or necessity, in the birth of a new member
of the family, in the earthly passing of another, the word of
God accompanies us and dwells among us. It is active,
alive, not intended to console us but to compel us to
seek a way of life in the shadow of the Lords presence.
Jesus is the Word of God made flesh, but he is also the
Word present in the Scriptures, so that when we read the
word, we bring to our eyes, ears, and conscience the
real presence of Jesus. It is a presence that casts out our
loneliness, our fears that God does not hear us, that he
may be occupied with more important matters. Bringing
Jesus into our homes through reading the Bible is a guar-
antee of his healing, freeing, and protecting presence; it
gives us certainty of his exclusive attention, without haste
or interruptions. Unfruitful dry land requires watering and
fertilization in order to properly absorb nutrients. Similarly,
our spirit must be nourished with the word of God that
enables us to discover the fruitfulness of our lives in light
of his word.
We have a tendency to display a Bible in our homes
as a decoration, open to a page with an artistic illustration,
something that we dust off once in a while. But the habit
of reading together as a family has yet to be adopted in
everyones home.
Dear reader, lets make it a goal to start reading the
Bible in our homes, together with our family around the
table, before or after dinner or before going to bed. The
psalms would be a good place to start, or the Gospels.
And remember that God is true to his promises, especially
when he says in Psalm 33: Taste and see the goodness
of the Lord. Tell one another I believe God and once
we are convinced of this statement, we will begin to see
miracles and transformation in our families.

Las cuatro tmporas del ao son los das en que la Iglesia
oraba insistentemente a Dios, dndole gracias y pidindole
por las varias necesidades de la humanidad, por los frutos
del campo y el trabajo de los hombres. Al comienzo de las
cuatro estaciones (de ah las cuatro tmporas o tiempos),
se dedicaban los tres das ms penitenciales de la semana
mircoles, viernes y sbado al ayuno y a la oracin, con
esas intenciones. Parece ser una institucin de origen clara-
mente romano, tal vez ya desde el siglo V, en conexin con
la vida agrcola y el ritmo de las estaciones del ao. Caan
en la primera semana de Cuaresma, la semana siguiente
a Pentecosts, los das siguientes al 14 de septiembre (la
Exaltacin de la Santa Cruz) y en Adviento.
En la ltima reforma del calendario se ha dejado que
cada conferencia episcopal, si le parece oportuno, adapte
fechas y contenidos de estas tmporas a las circunstancias
del propio pueblo (Normas Universales sobre el Ao
Litrgico y el Nuevo Calendario Romano General [NU]

TIEMPO ORDINARIO
Adems de los tiempos que tienen un carcter propio,
quedan treinta y tres o treinta y cuatro semanas en el curso
del ao en las cuales no se celebra algn aspecto peculiar
del misterio de Cristo, sino ms bien se recuerda el mismo
ministerio de Cristo en su plenitud, principalmente los
domingos. Este perodo de tiempo recibe el nombre de
Tiempo Ordinario.
El Tiempo Ordinario comienza el lunes que sigue al
domingo posterior al 6 de enero y se extiende hasta el
martes antes de Cuaresma, inclusive; de nuevo comienza el
lunes despus del domingo de Pentecosts y termina antes
de las primeras vsperas del I Domingo de Adviento (NU
4344: E 42954296).
EMBER DAYS
The four annual periods of ember days are the days on
which the Church prayed fervently to God, giving thanks
and asking God for diverse human needs, for the fruit of
the fields, and the work of people. At the beginning of
the four seasons (thus the four ember days or times), the
three most penitential days of the weekWednesday,
Friday, and Saturdaywere dedicated to fasting and
prayer for these intentions. It seems to have been clearly
an institution of Roman origin, perhaps in existence by
the fifth century, in connection with agricultural life and the
rhythm of the seasons of the year. The ember days fell in
the first week of Lent, the week following Pentecost, the
days after the fourteenth of September (The Exaltation of
the Holy Cross), and in Advent.
In the last calendar reform, it was left to each confer-
ence of bishops to arrange the time and plan of their
celebration in order to adapt the rogation and ember
days to the needs of their people (Universal Norms on the
Liturgical Year and the General Roman Calendar [UNLY]

ORDINARY TIME
Apart from those seasons which have their own distinctive
character, thirty-three or thirty-four weeks remain in the
yearly cycle that do not celebrate a specific aspect of the
mystery of Christ. Instead, especially on Sundays, they
are devoted to the mystery of Christ in all its aspects. This
period is known as Ordinary Time.

El llamado Tiempo Ordinario se puede decir que es
una novedad de la reforma posconciliar. Antes haba una
serie de domingos despus de la Epifana y otra de
domingos despus de Pentecosts. Ahora es una nica
serie con una cierta unidad a lo largo del ao. Sobre
todo, hay un elemento que le da unidad: el Leccionario.
El de los domingos, dividido en un ciclo de tres aos
(con el evangelista del ao), y el de los das feriales,
en dos (uno para el ao par y el otro, el ao impar). Esta
lectura semicontinuada de la Biblia convierte al Tiempo
Ordinario en la mejor escuela de la fe para la comunidad
cristiana.
Al Tiempo Ordinario tambin se le llama tiempo
durante el ao, en latn tempus per annus y antes, popu-
larmente, domingos verdes. Lo de ordinario no tendra
que interpretarse como poco importante o anodino. El
nombre lo distingue de los tiempos fuertes que son el
ciclo de Pascua y el de Navidad, con su preparacin y su
prolongacin.
Sin embargo, el Tiempo Ordinario tiene su gracia
particular. En rigor es el tiempo ms antiguo de la orga-
nizacin del ao cristiano y que, adems, ocupa la mayor
parte del ao (treinta y tres o treinta y cuatro semanas de
las cincuenta y dos). Este tiempo presenta valores que
no se pueden olvidar: nos ayuda a ir viviendo el misterio
de Cristo en su totalidad; nos acompaa en la tarea de
crecimiento y maduracin de lo que hemos celebrado en
la Navidad y en la Pascua; pone en evidencia la primaca
del domingo cristiano; nos ofrece la escuela permanente
de la palabra bblica; y nos hace descubrir la gracia de
lo ordinario la vida cotidiana vivida tambin como
tiempo de salvacin.
TRISAGIO
Trisagio, del griego tris-agion, tres veces santo,
es el nombre que se da a la aclamacin de alabanza
Santo Dios, Santo fuerte, Santo inmortal, testimo-
niado por primera vez en el Concilio de Calcedonia
(451). A veces se le dio sentido slo cristolgico, pero
la mayora de las veces es trinitario, como alabanza a
Dios Trino.
En los ritos orientales, sobre todo en el bizantino,
tiene su lugar en la procesin de entrada en la misa,
como tambin sucede en los das ms solemnes del rito
hispnico. En otras liturgias orientales, se canta antes
de las lecturas bblicas. En la liturgia romana se ha
conservado slo el Viernes Santo, durante la Adoracin
de la Cruz.
Otra modalidad que tambin se puede llamar trisa-
gio es la aclamacin de la Plegaria Eucarstica Santo,
Santo, Santo.
Ordinary Time begins on the Monday after the Sunday
following January 6 and continues up and through the
Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. It begins again on
the Monday after Pentecost and ends before evening
prayer I of the First Sunday of Advent (UNLY 4344: E
42954296).
What we call Ordinary Time can be said to be an
innovation of the post-Vatican II reform. Before, there
was a series of Sundays after Epiphany and another of
Sundays after Pentecost. Now it is one series only, with
a certain unity throughout the year. There is, above all,
one element that gives it unity: the Lectionary. First, there
is the one for Sundays, divided into three cycles (with the
evangelist for the year), and then the one for weekdays,
divided into two cycles. This semi-continuous reading of
the Bible changes Ordinary Time into the best school of
faith for the Christian community.
The name Ordinary Time is also referred to as time
during the year, in Latin, tempus per annum, and before
that, it was popularly known as green Sundays. The
term ordinary is not to be interpreted as of little impor-
tance or colorless. However, it can be distinguished
from the strong times, which are the cycles of Easter
and Christmas, with their preparation and prolongation.
Nevertheless, Ordinary Time has its own particular
charm. In truth, it is the oldest time in the organization of
the Christian year and also occupies the greater part of
the year (thirty-three or thirty-four Sundays out of fifty-two).
This time period introduces values that cannot be passed
over: it helps us to continue living the mystery of Christ in
its totality; it accompanies us in the task of growing and
maturing in what we celebrate at Christmas and Easter; it
gives evidence of the primacy of the Christian Sunday; it
offers us the permanent school of the biblical word; and it
forces us to discover grace in ordinary thingssalvation
can also be present in daily life.
TRISAGION
Trisagion, from the Greek tris-agion, three times holy, is
the name given to the acclamation of praise Holy God,
Holy Almighty, Holy Immortal, used for the first time at
the council of Calcedonia (451). Sometimes it is given a
meaning which is exclusively christological, but it is usually
meant to be Trinitarian, as praise to the triune God.
In the eastern rites, especially the Byzantine, its place is
in the procession at the entrance of the Mass, as is also
the case on the most solemn days of the Hispanic rite. In
other Eastern liturgies, it is sung before the Scripture read-
ings. In the Roman liturgy, it has only been preserved on
Good Friday, during the adoration of the Cross.
Another modality that can also be called a trisagion is the
Holy, Holy, Holy acclamation during the eucharistic prayer.

TROPARIO
La palabra griega designa una manera de canto que tiene
algo de himno, de salmo responsorial y de letana, y se
emplea, sobre todo, en los ritos orientales, acompaando las
procesiones. Muchos de ellos son marianos.
El tropario es como una antfona ms prolongada. Suele
estar formado por una estrofa cantada por el coro, un estri-
billo respondido por la comunidad, un versculo cantado
por un solista, de nuevo el estribillo de la comunidad (esto
puede repetirse varias veces) y al final, de nuevo, la estrofa,
a veces cantada tambin en parte por la comunidad. Esta
estrofa es ms larga que una antfona, ms de tipo hmnico
y lrico, mientras que los versculos estn pensados a modo
de tropos cantados por un solista, con respuesta ms
breve de la comunidad. Es un gnero de canto, por tanto,
que conjuga bien los tres protagonistas: la asamblea, el coro
y el solista.
A veces los troparios tienen formas parecidas a nuestros
responsorios del Oficio de Lecturas o los responsorios
breves de las otras Horas. Sirven sobre todo como canto de
entrada en la celebracin.
TROPO
La palabra tropo significa en griego varias cosas:
vueltas, meloda, interpretacin alegrica, y se aplica en
liturgia a las frases que amplan el canto intercalndose en
su meloda. Es un gnero que ayuda, a modo de comen-
tario, interpretacin o desglose, al canto de la comunidad,
llenando, por ejemplo, los neumas de un canto melismtico
gregoriano. Es algo parecido, pero mucho ms corto en su
realizacin, a las secuencias que prolongan el aleluya antes
del Evangelio.
Los tropos se usaron en la Edad Media sobre todo en
el canto de los Kyries y del Agnus Dei. Cuando se canta
el Seor, ten piedad como parte del acto penitencial, a
cada una de las aclamaciones se le antepone un tropo
(OGMR 52).

TROPARY
The Greek word tropary refers to a type of song that has
something of the hymn, responsorial, and litany, and
which is used, above all, in the Eastern rites to accom-
pany processions. Many of them are Marian.
The tropary is like a prolonged antiphon. It is usually
made up of a verse sung by the choir, a refrain answered
by the community, a verse sung by a soloist, again the
refrain from the community (this can be repeated several
times), and ending with the verse again, sometimes also
partially sung by the community. This verse is longer than
an antiphon, more lyrical, like a hymn, while the verses
are intended as a type of trope sung by a soloist, with a
shorter answer from the community. It is a type of song,
therefore, which unites the three main participants well:
assembly, choir, and soloist.
Sometimes the troparies take on a form similar to our
responsorials from the Office of Readings or the short
responsorials from the other Hours. They serve, above all,
as entrance songs for the celebration.
TROPE
The word trope means several things in Greek: return,
melody, allegoric interpretation, and it is applied in the
liturgy to the phrases that prolong a song by interspersing
themselves in its melody. It is a genre that encourages,
by means of commentary, interpretation, or separating
into parts, the song of the community, filling, for example,
the pneumas of a melismatic Gregorian chant. Tropes are
similar to, but much shorter in their execution than, the
sequences that prolong the alleluia before the Gospel.
Tropes were used in the Middle Ages, especially in the
chanting of the Kyrie and Agnus Dei. When the Kyrie is
sung as a part of the Penitential Act, a trope precedes
each acclamation (General Instruction of the Roman
Missal 52).

Quinceaera Celebrations
Al celebrar los quince aos de un joven o una joven, es
muy importante recordar la sencillez. Los quinceaeros
y quinceaeras, junto con sus familias y la comunidad,
celebran la Misa de Accin de Gracias a Dios por el don de
la vida. Es esencial que el equipo que prepara a los jvenes
y a los que participan en la celebracin transmitan este
conocimiento. La preparacin proporciona una oportunidad
para que los y las jvenes fortalezcan sus relaciones
personales con sus familias y con Jesucristo. Es clave que
dicha preparacin incluya los siguientes temas:

Reconocer la fe en un hogar cristiano, vivir y sentir la
presencia de Dios

unir sus voces a la del salmista, diciendo: Te doy gracias,
porque me has escogido portentosamente; porque son
admirables tus obras (Salmo 138, 14). En gratitud por el
don de la vida, los jvenes estn llamados a amar y respetar
a sus padres y a honrar su memoria si ya son difuntos.
When it comes to celebrating quinceaeras it is always
good to keep one thing in mindsimplicity. For this
to happen, it is essential that those facilitating the
preparation understand that the celebration, first and
foremost, is an act of thanksgiving to God for the gift
of life and that they transmit this understanding to the
participants. The purpose of this preparation is to provide
young people with an opportunity to strengthen their
personal relationships within their families and to deepen
their personal relationship with Jesus Christ. It is important
that such preparation include the following:
Celebration of life within a Christian context
Faith in a Christian homeexperiencing Gods
presence
Beginning a faith journey with Christ
Support from faith companions and sponsors
Selection of sacred music for the liturgy
Celebration of life within
a Christian context
Drawing on the experience of receiving gifts from God is
an important part of the preparation. The two basic truths
that these young people should know and value are that
they are created in the image and likeness of God and
that God loves them unconditionally. Affirming that they
are Gods handiwork will foster their self-esteem. With
the psalmist, they can truly say: I praise you, because I
am wonderfully made; wonderful are your works! (Psalm
139:14). In gratitude for the gift of life, young people are
encouraged to love and respect their parents or, if they
are deceased, to honor their memory.

La celebracin religiosa de los quince aos representa
una bendicin y un reto a la vez. La bendicin salta a la
vista cuando los jvenes crecieron en un hogar cristiano,
practicando la oracin y los sacramentos; viviendo en
un ambiente donde Dios, Jess, Mara y los santos han
estado presentes en sus vidas. Cuando esto no sucede,
entonces enfrentamos un reto. En el primer caso, la familia
ha preparado el corazn de los jvenes por medio de
experiencias en la fe, y stos vienen a nosotros listos para
profundizar su conocimiento y vivir la abundancia del amor
de Dios.
El reto sobresale cuando los jvenes vienen de hogares
donde no se viven los sacramentos y hay ausencia de
vida espiritual. En estos casos, nuestra hospitalidad cobra
vital importancia. Con mucho entusiasmo, aprovechamos
la oportunidad para cultivar el corazn de los jvenes y
los preparamos para escuchar el llamado y aceptar ser
discpulos del Seor.
Esta preparacin puede darse en forma de charlas,
un retiro, un panel o un da de oracin. Puesto que la
celebracin de los quince aos involucra a toda la familia
y amigos, la preparacin puede extenderse a los padres y a
los padrinos (los compaeros de fe o espnsores de fe). Se

mostrar aprecio por su familia.
Iniciar un camino con Cristo
Es importante reflexionar con los jvenes sobre el comienzo
de su camino de fe. Cuando sus padres y los padrinos,
acompaados por la comunidad entera, pidieron el bautismo
para sus hijos se inici el encuentro con Cristo. Es necesario
reflexionar con los jvenes sobre el significado del rito
bautismal. Cuando es posible, se usan smbolos del mismo

can be a blessing and a challenge. It is a blessing when
they come from Christian homes where God, Jesus, Mary
and the saints, prayer, pious devotions and practices,
and the celebration of the sacraments have been part of
their lives. The soil of their hearts has been prepared by
shared faith experiences within their family. They are ready
to hear more about God and his boundless love for them
as they seek to deepen their understanding, appreciation,
and celebration for the gift of life in the context of our faith.
It can be a challenge when young people come from
homes where God, spirituality, matters of faith, and the
celebration of the sacraments have not been part of their
experiences. Neither judging the circumstances of their
situation nor blaming their parents will be a sign of our
hospitality. We must enthusiastically seize the opportunity
to cultivate their hearts so that they can listen to and
accept the Lords call to be his disciples.
This preparation might include a series of small group
discussions, retreats, question-and-answer sessions, or
a day of prayer. Since the quinceaera celebration is a
family event, it is very appropriate to invite parents and
padrinos (faith companions and sponsors) to all or part of
the preparation. Relevant topics might include:
An explanation of the quinceaera tradition and its
meaning
A review of the sacraments of initiation
A reflection on the gift of sexuality
The importance of education
Discerning their vocation and serving others
Faith in a Christian home
experiencing Gods presence
Family provides for many basic needs: shelter, food,
protection, health care, education, and a sense of being
connected to the human family. Young people also
receive their name, identity, and a sense of belonging
and security from their family. The practice of prayer and
all forms of pious devotions are also developed in the
homemaking the sign of the cross, using baptismal
water for blessings, lighting candles, and displaying
images of Jesus, Mary, and the saints shape their basic
beliefs, values, and attitudes.
Beginning a faith journey with Christ
To help young people recall their first encounter with
Christ, it is important to reflect with them on the beginning
of their faith journey. Accompanied by their godparents,
they were taken to the church where, in the presence of
their family and the entire faith community, their parents
requested that they be baptized. We reflect with them
on the significance of the baptismal ritual and continue
to use baptismal symbols, whenever possible, as a

significa su participacin en la vida de Cristo como

cuidado, pues ellos, con su vida, dan testimonio de una
fe profunda e inspiran a los jvenes a seguir el camino
hacia el Seor. A menudo, cuando los jvenes tienen que
tomar decisiones crticas en su vida, son los padrinos y
espnsores, quienes dan auxilio y consejo, apoyndolos y
acompandolos en la fe.

para la celebracin litrgica
Es muy importante seleccionar msica litrgica adecuada
para la celebracin de los quince aos. El documento
Bendicin al cumplir quince aos/Order for the Blessing
on the Fifteenth Birthday, publicado por la Conferencia
de Obispos Catlicos de los Estados Unidos (2007),
proporciona una gua para la Misa de Accin de Gracias,
da pautas para las lecturas y oraciones que se pueden
usar y para la eleccin de los cantos. La msica litrgica
adecuada enriquece la calidad de la liturgia y alimenta la
fe de la asamblea. Recientemente, OCP public Quiero
Responder que S, 15 cantos para celebrar los Quince Aos
(ocpenespanol.org/30104223). Las bellas melodas de este
lbum cantan la gratitud humana por haber sido creados a

reminder that they belong to Christ, for example, water,
the sign of the cross on their forehead, etc. Anointing with
chrism signifies their participation in the life of Christ as
priest, prophet, and king and, thereby, their participation
in everlasting life. The baptismal garment is an outward
sign of their Christian dignity. A lighted candle symbolizes
that Christ is the light of the word. Through baptism
they became temples of the Holy Spirit. This means that
their bodies are sacred and should be protected as a
precious gem. Lead them in a prayer of thanksgiving for
the gift of baptism. Gently encourage them to stay close
to Christ by celebrating the sacraments of confirmation,
reconciliation, and the Eucharist.
Support from faith companions
and sponsors
Careful consideration should be given to the selection
of faith companions and sponsors since they are to
serve as living examples of what it means to live as a
Christian, while encouraging the young people to do the
same. They should be able and available to advise the
quinceaeras in making critical decisions concerning their
lives, their Catholic faith, and their future.
Selection of sacred music for the liturgy
Appropriate musical selection is of the utmost importance
for any quinceaera celebration. The document Bendicin
al cumplir quince aos/Order for the Blessing on the
Fifteenth Birthday, published by the US Conference
of Catholic Bishops (2007), provides guidelines to
prepare the Mass of Thanksgiving for a meaningful
celebration. Good sacred music enriches the quality of
the liturgical celebration and enhances the faith of the
assembly. Recently OCP introduced Quiero Responder
que S, 15 cantos para celebrar los Quince Aos (ocp.
org/30104223). These beautiful songs speak of being
made in the image and likeness of God, of baptism,
surrendering to the Lord, discipleship, life and faith,
gratitude and thanksgiving to God for the gift of life,

plan to save humanity.

Hoy, en una misma celebracin, celebramos el misterio de
comunin ms importante para nuestra vida cristiana:
Dios es uno en tres personas. Para reflexionar sobre este
misterio, necesitamos escuchar la Palabra de Dios que nos
ayuda a comprender cunto nos ama el Seor, revelado
para su pueblo (primera lectura), entregado para redimir-
nos (Evangelio), y vivo entre nosotros por la fuerza del
Espritu que nos anima y nos inspira a vivir en comunin
los unos con los otros (segunda lectura). De qu manera
expresamos este misterio en la comunidad, en la liturgia,
en nuestros grupos parroquiales? Durante la semana refle-
xionemos sobre la forma en que nuestra seal de la Cruz
nos invita a vivir en la comunin trinitaria a la que Dios nos
llama en su infinita misericordia.

La liturgia del Corpus Christi, magistralmente celebrada en
nuestros pases hispanos, muestra el amor de los fieles por
el regalo de la Eucarista en sus vidas de fe. En la historia,
la Eucarista se convirti para los misioneros en uno de los
smbolos primordiales para la evangelizacin de Amrica.
Adorado en la hostia que se coloca en la custodia con los
rayos extendidos, este smbolo se convirti en el sustituto
al dios-sol que adoraban los aztecas y los incas. De la
Eucarista en la custodia se conduca a los nuevos fieles a la
Palabra y la instruccin catequtica. La liturgia de hoy nos
invita a celebrar la Eucarista como alimento y como punto
de adoracin que nos ayuda a reflexionar sobre nuestra vida
de fe. El Seor nos acoge para darse como pan de vida
que sacia nuestra hambre. Se sugiere que no se omita la
secuencia del da. Si no se canta, la pueden proclamar dos
lectores dividiendo simplemente las estrofas entre hombres
y mujeres.

Today we celebrate the most important mystery of com-
munion revealed to us during our Christian journey:
God is one in three persons. However, to reflect upon
this mystery, we need to listen to the word that helps us
understand how God loves us, reveals himself to his peo-
ple (first reading), selflessly sacrifices for us (Gospel), and
lives among us by the power of the Spirit, who animates
our lives so that we too can live in communion with one
another (second reading). In what ways do we express
such great mystery in our community, in the liturgy, in our
parish groups? During the week, let us reflect on ways the
sign of the cross invites us to share the Trinitarian life to
which God calls us in his mercy.

The liturgy of Corpus Christi, traditionally celebrated with
great solemnity in Hispanic countries, shows how much
the faithful respect and love the gift of the Eucharist in their
lives. Historically, the Eucharist was one of the primary
symbols used by missionaries in the evangelization of
America. Worshipped in the monstrance with a host in the
center and rays extending in every direction, it became a
substitute for the sun god of the Aztecs and the Incas.
From the Eucharist, converts were led to Gods word and
to catechetical instruction. Todays liturgy invites us to
celebrate the Eucharist as food and as the focus of our
worshipa sacrament that helps us reflect on our life of
faith. The Lord draws us near to give himself as the Bread
of Life that satisfies our hunger. Todays sequence should
not be omitted. If it is not sung, two lectors can proclaim it,
with men and women reading alternate verses.

La historia de Juan el Bautista nos ayuda a recordar el inter-
cambio sagrado que hace Dios con su pueblo: la promesa
que anticipa la llegada del Mesas y la respuesta a la alianza
que Dios exige de todos los que creen en l. En la Misa de
Vigilia los textos bblicos destacan la llamada de Dios a
los profetas y pone en marco el regalo que hace el Seor,
quien hace frtil lo que es infrtil. Isabel y Zacaras a pesar
de su avanzada edad, estn llamados a ser padres de un
gran profeta. Es el anticipo de una historia en la que Juan,
ya adulto, va a jugar un papel importantsimo. Convendra
que el comit parroquial de liturgia sugiriese a los grupos
parroquiales, en especial a los jvenes, preguntas para
reflexionar: Qu significa ser profeta hoy en da? Me
siento llamado(a) por Dios para predicar su Palabra? De
qu manera puedo predicarla?

La historia del nacimiento del profeta contina en la Misa
del Da. El Evangelio nos relata cmo Zacaras, quien se
vio mudo por no aceptar la voluntad de Dios, se siente libre
para hablar de nuevo cuando acepta el nombre escogido
para el recin nacido: Juan. Si la Misa de Vigilia resalta
la misin del profeta, la Misa del Da enfoca al nio Juan
como alguien llamado a participar activamente en el plan
de salvacin trazado desde la antigedad. Juan se ha de
convertir en el puente entre la antigua y la nueva alianza,
el precursor del Mesas que da la vida por todos. La fiesta
de san Juan es muy conocida en los pueblos hispanos y se
celebra con gran alegra. De todos los santos que aparecen
en el calendario romano, Juan y la Santsima Virgen Mara
son los nicos a quienes la Iglesia les celebra su nacimiento.
La Iglesia celebra la fecha de la muerte de los santos como
su verdadero nacimiento a la vida eterna. Por qu tenemos
devocin a los Santos? Quines son los santos en nuestra
vida? Ambas preguntas exigen una reflexin sobre el gran
matrimonio que debe existir entre la liturgia oficial y la
piedad popular de los fieles.

La fiesta que hoy celebra la Iglesia tiene sus races en el
corazn de Jesucristo, del que ha brotado sangre y agua
para nuestra salvacin. Esta devocin del siglo XVII, tan
extendida desde entonces y, ahora transformada en liturgia
eucarstica, nos ayuda a comprender la cercana del Seor
al sufrimiento y a la muerte, pero tambin nos inspira a
compartir la compasin y la caridad con todos. Su amor por
la humanidad nos hace amarnos los unos a los otros, como
dice la lectura de San Juan. El Seor nos invita a descan-
sar nuestras penas en su corazn, abierto para un mundo
lleno de odios y rencores. Convendra que los miembros
del comit de liturgia muestren su iniciativa como lderes,
no slo en la preparacin de las celebraciones de hoy, sino
relacionando la compasin y la misericordia del Seor ante

The story of John the Baptist allows us to remember the
sacred exchange that God makes with his people: the
promise of a Messiah and the peoples response to the
covenant God made with all those who believe in him. At
this vigil Mass the Scriptures highlight Gods call to the
prophets and the generosity of God, who turns infertility
into fertility. Despite their old age, Zechariah and Elizabeth
are called to be parents of a great prophet. This is the
beginning of a story in which John, as an adult, will play
a most significant role. Liturgy committees may suggest
a few questions that parish groups, especially young
adults, can discuss at their weekly gatherings: What does
it mean to be a prophet today? Do I feel called by God to
preach his word? How am I called to do it?

The story describing the birth of the prophet continues
in todays Mass. The Gospel tells us how Zechariah,
his father, was rendered mute for not accepting Gods
will. Later, when he accepts the name chosen for the
newborn (John), he regains the ability to speak. If the
vigil Mass highlights the role of the prophet, this Mass
during the day focuses on the child who has been called
to participate actively in Gods plan of salvation. John
will become a bridge between the old and the new cov-
enants, the precursor of the Messiah who will give his
life for all. The feast of Saint John is very popular among
Hispanic Catholics and they celebrate it with great joy.
Of all the saints in the Roman calendar, John and the
Blessed Virgin Mary are the only ones whose birth we
celebrate. Normally the Church celebrates the death of
the saints as their true birth to eternal life. We might ask
ourselves: Why are we devoted to the saints? Who are
the saints in our life? Both questions invite reflection upon
the great marriage that exists between the official liturgy of
the Church and the popular piety of the faithful.

Todays feast is rooted in the heart of our Lord Jesus
Christ, from whom blood and water flowed for our salva-
tion. This devotion from the seventeenth century, widely
spread in the Church since then and now transformed
into a solemnity on the liturgical calendar, helps us
understand the nearness of the Lord to suffering and
death; it also inspires us to share the Lords compassion
and generosity with everyone we meet. As Saint John
writes in todays second reading, the love of Jesus for all
humanity compels us to love one another. In the Gospel,
the Lord invites us to place all our worries and concerns
in his heart, opened for a world full of hatred and strife.
The members of the liturgy committee should exercise
their role as leaders not only in the preparation of todays

La Misa de Vigilia de esta gran solemnidad enfoca la re-
lacin de Jess con Pedro, el pescador impulsivo que se
convirti en la roca de la Iglesia. El dilogo hermossimo
entre Jesucristo y Pedro que el Evangelio nos presenta
despliega esa relacin de amor a la que Cristo le aade
con gran insistencia la misin de pastorear a su pueblo.
Pedro le contesta que s, consciente de que debe crecer en
el ministerio. En la carta de san Pablo a los glatas tambin
se vislumbra un testimonio de fe que Pablo mismo hiciera
sobre su vida y su ministerio. Estos textos pueden servir
para que los ministros de la comunidad se renan a refle-
xionar sobre la forma en que responden al llamado del
Seor en el servicio a su pueblo. Ordenados o laicos, todos
participan de alguna manera en las respuestas que hicieron
Pedro y Pablo; todos deben anhelar crecer en el mismo
amor y reflejar la misma generosidad que caracteriz la
vida de estos grandes apstoles.

Hoy recordamos en toda la Iglesia universal al prncipe de
los apstoles y al apstol de los gentiles: san Pedro y san
Pablo. El testimonio de sus vidas aparece en los Hechos
de los Apstoles. Su entrega total a la Iglesia ha servido de
inspiracin a todos los pastores que hayan sido llamados al
liderazgo del pueblo de Dios, desde el Santo Padre, Obispo
de Roma, hasta el ms anciano de los sacerdotes. La comuni-
dad eleva sus preces hoy de una manera especial por el Papa.
Se recomienda la preparacin de hojas impresas o el aviso de
alguna charla comunitaria, que explique a los fieles el origen
del papado y su desarrollo histrico, en vista de la transicin
inigualable que en el 2013 todos hemos presenciado.

Muchas personas creen que los cristianos se quejan de
la vida y la rechazan porque solamente piensan y buscan
las cosas del cielo. No pueden estar ms equivocados.
La Iglesia misma rechaza tal actitud. Jess es hombre y
Dios, encarnado para nuestra salvacin. Por la fuerza del
Espritu, en la Cruz nos abrazamos a la vida cotidiana que
a veces nos agobia, pero tambin por la Cruz disfrutamos
de una vida nueva con la fuerza del Resucitado. Hoy Jess
nos invita a dejar toda carga en su corazn y en sus manos.
Estos textos pueden servir para una catequesis despus de
la Misa sobre el sacramento de la uncin y una explicacin
sobre los ministros laicos que visitan a los enfermos y los
acompaan a dejar su enfermedad y sus preocupaciones en
el Seor.

The vigil Mass for this great solemnity focuses on the
relationship between Jesus and Peter, the impulsive fish-
erman who became the rock of the Church. The Gospel
dialogue that takes place after the Resurrection displays
the intensity of this relationship. As Peter responds to
Christs invitation to love, Jesus calls him with great insis-
tence to yet another mission: shepherding Gods people.
In Saint Pauls letter to the Galatians, we observe a similar
witness of faith, as the apostle to the Gentiles describes
his calling and his ministry. These texts might be used to
help parish or community leaders reflect on the way they
respond to Christs call to love and service. Ordained or
non-ordained, all of us participate to a certain degree in
the response of Peter and Paul. Let us strive to grow in
love and to reflect the generosity these great apostles
showed in their lives.

Today the universal Church remembers the prince of
the apostles and the apostle to the gentiles: Saint Peter
and Saint Paul. The witness of their lives appears in the
Book of the Acts of the Apostles. Their total gift of self
to the Church has served to inspire all shepherds that
have been called to the leadership of Gods people, from
the Holy Father, bishop of Rome, to the most humble
of Gods priests. Catholics pray in a special way today
for the pope. Perhaps parish communities may prepare
printed materials or announce a talk on the origins of the
papacy and its historical development, especially in light
of the unimaginable transition we all witnessed in 2013.

Many believe that Christians complain about life on earth
and reject it because they think only of the things of
heaven. They could not be more mistaken. The Church
itself rejects this attitude. Jesus is true God and true
man, made incarnate for our salvation. By the power of
the Spirit, we can embrace the sometimes overwhelming
cross of our daily life. Through the cross, we can also
begin to enjoy the fruits of redemption and the power of
the Resurrection. Today Jesus invites us to come to him
and place our burdens in his heart and his hands. Such
a text can provide a basis for catechesis, after Mass, on
the anointing of the sick and clarification on the role of
lay ministers who visit the sick and accompany them in
their illness, encouraging them to turn their worries over
to the Lord.

sioneros, para alimentarnos y saciar nuestra hambre. Hoy
los textos se presentan para que los lectores de la parroquia
se renan a celebrar su ministerio laico y a compartirlo con
los dems. Ser sta una buena oportunidad para com-
partir la historia de este ministerio con la comunidad, para
reclutar nuevos lectores de nuestras escuelas, de los grupos

Dios hoy se revela como clemente y misericordioso,
cuyo Espritu fortalece nuestras debilidades y nos anima
a caminar juntos por la vida con esperanza y sin miedos.
Para responder a esta maravillosa revelacin, nuestro
corazn necesita siempre estar en sintona con el Seor. La
oracin es la llave que abre la puerta de nuestro corazn,
ya que la puerta del corazn del Seor siempre est abierta
para aquellos que le escuchan. La Palabra nos dispone a la
oracin y por ello conviene que, en los comentarios de la
Misa y en la propia homila, se invite a la asamblea a que
lea de nuevo estos textos durante la semana para que, iden-
tificndose con ellos, pueda separar un tiempo de reflexin.
Cmo respondo yo al Dios clemente y misericordioso que
siempre me busca para animar mi vida con su Espritu?

Dnde encontramos el Reino de los cielos? Tal parece
como si los textos nos lo quisieran decir desde la primera
lectura. El Seor le concede a Salomn lo que ha pedido;
ms que riquezas o una larga vida, Salomn recibe un nuevo
reino en su corazn. El Evangelio de san Mateo nos ayuda
a comprender a qu se asemeja el Reino, pero el Reino
est en nuestros corazones arrepentidos y renovados por la
fuerza del Seor para servirles como discpulos y misione-
ros en nuestra vida diaria. Algunos de estos textos pueden
servir de temas para grupos juveniles que se entusiasman
por conocer ms a Jess y servirle como proclamadores del
Reino. Qu significa para los catlicos ser portavoces de
este mensaje ante una cultura donde la palabra reino se
asemeja a riquezas, al poder y a la influencia que podamos
tener en la sociedad?

Todays Scriptures highlight the function of Gods word
in our lives of faith. The word is like rain, like the good
seed that takes root in fertile soil. God speaks to us in
order to become incarnate in our hearts and to motivate
us to lead happy lives as disciples and missionaries. God
also speaks to us so as to nourish us and satisfy our
hunger. Todays texts provide the lectors of our parish an
opportunity for gathering and celebrating their lay ministry.
Perhaps this is a good time to share the history of this
ministry with the community and to recruit new lectors
from our schools, youth groups, and assembliesmen
and women burning with desire to proclaim the readings
that announce salvation to the world.

God is revealed today as kind and merciful. Gods Spirit
strengthens us in our weaknesses and encourages us so
that we may walk together with joy and without fear. How
do we respond to such awesome revelation? Our hearts
need to be on the same page with the heart of the Lord.
Prayer is the key that opens the door of our hearts, for the
door of Gods heart is always open to those who wish to
listen to him. The word disposes us to prayer. For this rea-
son, the homily and other commentaries during the Mass
should encourage the faithful to re-read these texts during
the week as a font of reflection in their daily lives. How
do we respond to our kind and merciful God who always
searches for us in order to fill our lives with his Spirit?

Where do we find the kingdom of heaven? The texts of
todays liturgy dont waste any time giving us the answer;
this theme is present even in the first reading. The Lord,
indeed, grants King Solomon his request: neither riches
nor a long life, but a wise heart. Saint Matthews Gospel
helps us appreciate what the kingdom might be like. In
reality, the kingdom lies within hearts that are contrite,
renewed by the grace of the Lord, and ready to serve
as disciples and missionaries in our daily life. Some of
these texts may help youth groups that are eager to know
Jesus more intimately and to serve him as proclaimers
and messengers of the kingdom. What does it mean for
Catholics to be spokespeople of this message in a culture
that associates kingdom with striving for wealth, power,
and influence in our society?

Todays liturgy asks us a rather direct question: What can
truly satisfy us? In a society where obesity is common and
physical food seems more important than spiritual food,

el que quiere saciar el hambre y la sed de su pueblo y
Jess en el Evangelio se dispone a dar de comer a una gran
muchedumbre. Ante tantas bendiciones, qu o quin nos
puede apartar del amor con el que Cristo nos ama? Quizs
para grupos pequeos, y entre los servidores de la liturgia,
la comisin de liturgia pudiera preparar en forma breve
lo que significa hoy en da cada una de las realidades que
san Pablo presenta como obstculos en la segunda lectura:
Las tribulaciones? Las angustias? La persecucin? El
hambre? A la vez, se pueden preguntar qu nos mantiene
unidos al amor de Cristo?

Son muchos los que buscan a Dios en nuestra sociedad con-
tempornea. Algunos piensan que lo encuentran en varios
caminos de confusin. La Iglesia comparte la responsabili-
dad de anunciar al Dios revelado en Jesucristo que viene a
rescatar a todos los que lo buscan y a todos los que viven
confundidos. El Evangelio de hoy nos presenta a todos que
experimentamos tormentas en nuestra vida diaria frente a
Cristo que viene a darnos la mano y a conducirnos hacia la
verdadera felicidad, el tesoro de la fe que nos anima a servir
al prjimo sin condiciones ni prejuicios. Cun importante
es resaltar este tema en la homila de hoy y en las preces
que se ofrecen en la liturgia! Si en la juventud se encuentra
nuestro futuro como Iglesia, es ste un tema importante que
se debe tratar entre los grupos de jvenes que nos rodean:
cules son las tormentas que nos hacen buscar a Jesucristo
en nuestro mundo? De qu manera nos ha dado la mano el
Seor para rescatarnos de ellas?
Vigilia
En esta Misa de Vigilia se presenta a la Madre de Dios
como smbolo de la Iglesia que anuncia la vida eterna por
el don que le hiciera Dios en su concepcin y asuncin.
Cmo poda sufrir corrupcin la mujer que llev en su
seno al Salvador del mundo? Nuestra Madre es el Arca de
la Alianza, la Madre de Dios y Madre nuestra, en especial
la que escuch la palabra y respondi S a la llamada que
le hiciera Dios en Nazaret. La Iglesia hoy se regocija por
ser ella la primera de las criaturas que experiment la vida
resucitada de una manera especial, en cuerpo y alma. En
este espritu de jbilo universal conviene que se distingan
en la comunidad aquellos pases hispanos que hoy celebran
a Mara como su patrona, porque a travs de ella se arraig
en sus pueblos la fe de nuestra Iglesia.

Los textos de las lecturas de hoy resaltan tres temas de suma
importancia para todos como miembros de la Iglesia: la
Gods word provides an answer. In the Old Testament,
God presents himself as one who wants to satisfy the
hunger and thirst of his people. In the Gospel, Jesus
wishes to feed a great crowd. Before such blessings,
Saint Paul asks, who or what can separate us from the
love of Christ? Liturgy committees can help the community
reflect on and identify, in todays world, the realities Saint
Paul presents as obstacles to Christs love in todays sec-
ond reading: Tribulation? Anguish? Persecution? Hunger?
At the same time, we must ask ourselves: What keeps us
in communion with Christs love?

There are many people who search for God in our society
today. Many who feel they have found him are actually
following paths of confusion. In the Church we all share
the responsibility of announcing how God has revealed
himself in Jesus Christ, who comes to rescue all who
seek him and all who live in confusion. Todays Gospel
leads all of us who experience storms in our daily lives
to turn to Christ, who reaches out his hand to lead us to
true happiness. Such happinessthe hidden treasure
of our faithis grounded in loving our neighbor without
conditions or prejudices. How significant is this theme for
our homilies and for the prayer of the faithful in todays
liturgy! If our future as a Church is to be found in young
people, we must share this theme with the youth groups
in our community. What are the storms that lead us to
seek Jesus Christ in our world? In what ways has Christ
reached out his hand to rescue us from them?
Vigilia
The Mother of God is presented in todays vigil Mass as
a symbol of the Church that announces eternal life as a
consequence of the gift God granted in her conception
and assumption. How could the one who carried the Savior
of the world in her womb undergo corruption? Our Mother
is the Ark of the Covenant, the Mother of God and our
mother, who heard Gods word and answered yes to the
call he gave her in Nazareth. The Church rejoices, indeed,
because Mary was the first of all creatures to experience
the fullness of Resurrection life in body and soul. In a spirit
of universal jubilation, we should also recognize in our com-
munity those Hispanic countries that celebrate Mary on this
solemnity as their patron, for it was through Mary that the
faith of our Church took root in those nations.

The Scriptures for todays Mass emphasize three signifi-
cant themes for all members of the Church: the ongoing

Las lecturas hoy nos presentan a todos los que buscan a
Dios y quieren tener fe. Isaas, en la primera lectura, anun-
cia que estos han de encontrarse con el Seor en el monte
santo. San Pablo, en la carta a los romanos, nos recuerda la
transformacin que l mismo experiment de rebelde a
justo por la gracia de Dios, y que todos podemos experi-
mentar si damos un paso ms all de nuestro egosmo para
abrazarnos con Jess resucitado. As quiso abrazarse a l
la mujer cananea, extranjera, que le pidi ayuda y sanacin
para su hija. Jess se la concede por su gran fe. Cmo
medimos nuestra fe en la vida espiritual? Ciertamente por
nuestra cercana al Seor en la oracin y por nuestra accin
en la caridad por los dems. Reflexionemos sobre esta
doble misin de orar y actuar en Jesucristo y analicemos
a diario, con el termmetro de la fe, si somos fieles a su
llamado.
XXI Domingo Ordinario
Indiscutiblemente, Dios se ha revelado en Jesucristo,
nuestro Mediador y Seor. Toda nuestra sabidura y dis-
cernimiento provienen de su divina misericordia. San Pablo
proclama la realidad de estos dones en la comunidad y nos
invita a alabar a Dios agradecidos por su presencia entre
nosotros con su gracia da tras da. Dios nos ha creado para
que regresemos a su amor infinito. Jess es nuestro camino,
nuestra verdad y nuestra vida. En el Evangelio, Jess hace
a sus discpulos la pregunta clave: Quin soy yo? Hoy
con Pedro, la roca de nuestra Iglesia, profesamos nuestra
fe en Jesucristo. Preparemos, entonces, a nuestro equipo
del RICA con ms profundidad para que podamos ayudar
a los que buscan al Seor y anhelan abrazarse a su vida
resucitada por medio de la iniciacin cristiana a nuestra
comunidad de fe.

the victory of the cross over evil, the risen life of Christ
that we all share by the grace of God, and Marys obedi-
ent yes through which she proclaims the blessings of
the Lord in her life. Indeed, she inspires us to live with
hope in the midst of our difficulties. We are called to live
always longing for the gifts of heaven and detached from
anything that may separate us from such longing, which is
born in the heart of each one of us through faith. In com-
munion with the universal Church, we celebrate today the
Assumption of the Virgin, who intercedes for us and fills
us with great hope. May we live always united with the
Lord and our neighbors.

Todays readings present to us those who search for
God and want to have faith. In the first reading, Isaiah
announces that those who wish to meet the Lord must
do so on the holy mountain. Saint Paul, in his letter to
the Romans, reminds us of the transformation he himself
experiencedfrom rebellious to righteousby the grace
of God. We can all have that same experience if we take
one step outside our selfish egoism and embrace one
another with the risen Lord. In this way the Canaanite
woman, the foreigner who asked for help and healing
for her daughter, desired to embrace him. Jesus fulfills
her wishes because of her great faith. In the spiritual life,
how can we measure our faith? The best measure is our
nearness to the Lord through prayer and our charitable
actions toward others. Let us reflect on this double mis-
sion of prayer and action in Jesus Christ and see whether,
measuring our faith day by day, we are faithful to his call.
XXI Domingo Ordinario
There is no doubt for us that God has revealed himself
in Jesus Christ, our Lord and mediator. All wisdom and
discernment come from his divine mercy. Saint Paul
proclaims such gifts in the community and invites us to
praise God in thanksgiving for his grace and his presence
among us day by day. God created us so that we may
return to his infinite love. Jesus is our way, our truth, and
our life. In todays Gospel, Jesus asks his disciples the
key question: Who do you say that I am? With Peter, the
rock on which the Church is built, we make our profes-
sion of faith in Jesus Christ. So let us prepare our RCIA
teams more carefully at this time, to help those who seek
the Lord and long to embrace his risen life by means of
Christian initiation in our faith community.

Dentro de lo que cabe, hablar del principio de la solemnidad
progresiva, habiendo terminado la celebracin del tiempo de
la Pascua de Resurreccin de Cristo, recordemos que, en re-
lacin con la dinmica del ao litrgico, el tiempo ordinario
es de menor importancia. Empero, el domingo sigue siendo
ocasin para celebrar el Misterio pascual como da del Se-
or, por tanto, sera prudente descansar el ambiente que
se crea con los cantos de la Pascua y optar por un reperto-
rio ms sencillo. Una manera de hacer esto es examinar las
partes del Ordinario de la Misa que hemos cantado durante
la Pascua y ver en qu forma podemos cambiar lo que se
canta. Por ejemplo, podemos cambiar el formulario del acto
penitencial que utilizamos, tal vez optando por el poco usado
Formulario 2, y recitarlo en vez de cantar el Seor, ten pie-
dad. El arreglo del Gloria, tanto como el de las aclamacio-
nes eucarsticas cantadas, pueden sustituirlas por una misa
cantada ms sencilla. Tambin podemos ver la forma en que
guardamos los silencios rituales (vase n. 45 de la Instruc-

Having just completed the fifty-day celebration of Easter, let
us remember that Ordinary Time is less important, accord-
ing to the principle of progressive solemnity and relative to
other seasons within the liturgical year. Although Sunday
continues to be an occasion to celebrate the paschal mys-
tery as the day of the Lord, it would be proper to tone down
the musical environment that was created during Easter and
opt for a slightly simpler repertoire. One way of doing this is
to examine the parts of the Mass that we sang during the
Easter season and see how we might vary what we sing
and how we sing it. For example, we can choose the sel-
dom-used second form of the penitential act, reciting Lord,
have mercy instead of singing it. The setting of the Gloria,
as well as the eucharistic acclamations, can be replaced by
a simpler setting. This would also be an opportune time to
examine the way that we observe the ritual silence during
the liturgy (see General Instruction of the Roman Missal 45).
We could use Ordinary Time to catechize on the meaning
and nature of each moment of ritual silence. The Mass may
be concluded with a simple blessing and dismissal. I sug-
gest accompanying the dismissal with a song touching on
the theme of discipleship and mission.
Solemnities and feasts
The solemnities of the Most Holy Trinity and the Most
Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi) initiate
the second phase of Ordinary Time but still resonate an
Easter environment and feeling. Both of these solemnities
have their own collects and prefaces. These may also

la celebracin que nos puede ayudar en nuestra reflexin
y preparacin. Consideren agregar a su repertorio algunos
cantos de Flor y Canto, tercera edicin (FC III) como:
Gloria Trinitario (Aravena 389), El Es Santo (Garca-
Lpez y Lpez 390) y Himno a la Trinidad (Fones
392), los cuales son tiles no slo para la solemnidad de
la Santsima Trinidad sino para ayudarnos a profundizar
nuestro entendimiento y fe en el Dios Trinitario.
La solemnidad del Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo tiene
una secuencia opcional que se canta antes del aleluya.
Durante la misa de mayor asistencia, tras la oracin despus
de la Comunin, se puede llevar la custodia en procesin,
con cantos eucarsticos, detenindose en altares previa-

versiones: Lucas 1: Bendito Es el Seor (Matu 257),
Lucas 1: Benedictus (Rubio 256), Lucas 1: Cntico de
Zacaras (Sosa 255) y Cntico Evanglico: Benedictus
(Rubalcava 143). Se puede cantar como canto de entrada
o durante la Comunin. Usen la bendicin solemne para
la Fiesta de un Santo, haciendo la adaptacin apropiada.
El tercer viernes despus de Pentecosts, 27 de junio de
2014, celebramos el Sagrado Corazn de Jess, que nos
recuerda el amor divino que encontramos en Jess. El Misal
Romano nos presenta dos opciones para la oracin colecta.
Pueden usar la Letana al Sagrado Corazn de Jess
durante la Comunin, con el formato y meloda tradicional
de la letana de los santos. Se canta el Gloria y se dice el
Credo en ambas celebraciones.
Los domingos del Tiempo Ordinario
Domingo tras domingo seguimos celebrando el Misterio
pascual de la vida, muerte y resurreccin de Cristo, recor-
dando los acontecimientos como comunidad cristiana y
dndoles sentido a travs del Evangelio de san Mateo que
nos presenta el ciclo A. En los evangelios se habla de la
vida y el ministerio de Jess y del discipulado. Las lecturas
y la vida sacramental nos alimentan y fortalecen, aumentan-
do nuestro compromiso bautismal de ir y dar a conocer la
Buena Nueva del Reino de Dios.
El verano tambin es un tiempo ideal para celebrar
fiestas patronales que nos permiten organizar procesiones
y festividades al aire libre. Para celebrarlas en el contexto
del ao litrgico habr que tomar en cuenta las pautas y
enseanzas de la Iglesia en dos documentos que les reco-
mendamos leer: el Directorio sobre la Piedad Popular y la
Liturgia: Principios y Orientaciones de la Congregacin
para el Culto Divino y la Disciplina de los Sacramentos, el

The solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of
Christ has an optional sequence that is sung before the

the monstrance with the Blessed Sacrament may be
taken in procession, stopping along the way at various
altars that have previously been prepared. This devotion
is an occasion to include all the different cultures and
language groups that make up the parish.
This part of Ordinary Time also includes two feasts that
are quite popular within the Hispanic community. On June
24 we celebrate the solemnity of the Nativity of Saint John
the Baptist (six months before Christmas). The Roman
Missal includes proper prayers for both the vigil and the
day of this solemnity. This is a good opportunity to sing a
setting of the Canticle of Zechariah. There are several ver-
sions in Flor y Canto, tercera edicin: Lucas 1: Bendito
Es el Seor (Matu 257), Lucas 1: Benedictus (Rubio
256), Lucas 1: Cntico de Zacaras (Sosa 255), and
Cntico Evanglico: Benedictus (Rubalcava 143). It may
be sung to accompany the entrance and/or Communion
processions. Use the solemn blessing On the Feast of a
Saint (Misal Romano only), inserting Saint Johns name
in the proper places.
The third Friday after Pentecost (June 27, 2014) the
Church celebrates the solemnity of the Most Sacred
Heart of Jesus. The Roman Missal presents us with two
options for the collect. Consider using the well-known
Litany of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, sung to the tune
and format of the traditional chant for the Litany of the
Saints, to accompany the Communion procession. The
Gloria is sung and the Creed is recited for both of these
solemnities.
The Sundays of Ordinary Time
On the Sundays of Ordinary Time we continue celebrat-
ing the paschal mystery of the life, death, and resurrec-
tion of Christ, remembering the events as a community
of faith and giving these their meaning within a biblical
context, particularly through the Gospel of Matthew that
Year A presents us. In the Gospel readings we hear of
the life and ministry of Jesus and the call to discipleship.
The readings and the sacramental life nourish us and
strengthen us to deepen our baptismal commitment to go
and make known the good news of the kingdom of God.
The summer is also an ideal time to celebrate patronal
feasts that allow the possibility of organizing and planning
for processions and festivities in the open air. To help you
plan the celebrations within the context of the liturgical year,
it is important that we take into account the teachings and

Latin American communities celebrate a number of
different patron saints during the summer. Our Colombian
brothers and sisters celebrate Our Lady of the Rosary of
Chiquinquir on July 9. On July 16, the Chilean commu-
nity celebrates their patroness, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel.
On August 2, the Costa Rican community celebrates their
patroness, Our Lady of the Angels. And our brothers and
sisters from El Salvador celebrate their patron, the Divine
Savior of the World, on the feast of the Transfiguration of
the Lord on August 6.
Summer is also a time of vacations and this reality
affects the persons that lend their services in the various
liturgical ministries of the parish. When selecting music
for your celebrations, keep in mind the parishs repertoire
and the capacity of the assembly. The document Sing
to the Lord: Music in Divine Worship presents us with
a valuable study for the members of the pastoral music
team (ocp.org/20995). Those charged with the formation
of the musicians should familiarize themselves with this

Cuando las escuelas catlicas de la Habana, Cuba, cerraron
por mandato gubernamental, Juan Sosa pidi a sus padres
que lo ayudaran a salir del pas. En 1961, l y su hermana
llegaron a los Estados Unidos. Aos ms tarde, aquel chico
de primaria se entreg al ministerio apostlico como pres-
btero. De all se desencaden una larga historia de amor
y servicio que combina el magisterio y la administracin,
la composicin musical y la autora de libros y numerosos
artculos sobre la liturgia hispana. Ha desempeado varias
funciones, entre ellas: director asociado de catequesis y
codirector del diaconado permanente, director ejecutivo
del Ministerio del Culto y la Vida Espiritual, catedrtico
de los seminarios de Florida y miembro del dilogo pres-
biteriano-catlico de la Conferencia de Obispos Catlicos
de los Estados Unidos (USCCB). Tambin particip en el
Subcomit para el Culto Divino en Espaol de los obis-
pos de los Estados Unidos, del cual es consultor activo.
Actualmente, cumple su ministerio como prroco de la
comunidad de San Jos en la arquidicesis de Miami y es
presidente del Instituto Nacional Hispano de Liturgia.

An international voice of liturgical music
When the government forced the Catholic schools in
Havana, Cuba, to close, Juan Sosa asked his parents if
they would help him leave the country. In 1961, he and
his sister arrived in the United States. Years later, that
young boy dedicated himself to apostolic ministry as a
priest. And that began a long history of love and service
that brought together a mix of teaching and administra-
tion, composing music, and writing various books and
numerous articles about Hispanic ministry. He has held
a variety of positions over the years, including associate
director of catechesis and co-director of the permanent
diaconate; executive director of the Ministry of Worship
and Spiritual Life; professor at the Florida seminaries; and
a member of the Presbyterian-Catholic dialogue of the
US Conference of Catholic Bishops. He also participated
on the US bishops Subcommittee on Divine Worship in
Spanish, for which he is still an active consultant. He cur-
rently serves as pastor for Saint Joseph Catholic Church
in the archdiocese of Miami and president of the National
Hispanic Institute for Liturgy.
His journey with OCP
Father Sosa is a regular contributor for Liturgia y Cancin.
His work as a composer and consultant has even
extended to the well-known Spanish-language hymnal
Flor y Canto, which contains his Misa de la Aurora (Mass
of the Sunrise) as well as many of his other songs. OCP
has also published his book One Voice, Many Rhythms,
a guide for ministers who want to learn more about mul-
ticultural ministries in the United States (ocp.org/6148).
His interest in musical composition began when he
was a student at the Saint Vincent de Paul seminary in
South Florida. Some of us taught ourselves how to play
the piano. Our classes on Gregorian chant were devel-
oped using our own melodies, he explains. He would

What can godparents say to their
goddaughter at her Quinceaera?
Father Sosa explains: The best thing one can do for any
young person celebrating her quinceaera is prayfor
her present as well as her future. This prayer can be
transformed into song. The bilingual song Cancin de los
Padrinos/Song by the Sponsors reminds us of the young
persons baptism, the intercession of the Mother of God,
the support of the parents and godparents, and the gifts
of faith that she was given by her family on that special day
when she received Christs seal. These intangible gifts are
far more important than any material gift that her godpar-
ents might give her. The goal of this song is to affirm the
faith of the entire assembly, and it uses the celebration of
the Mass of Thanksgiving for the gift of life as a starting
point. The role of the godparentsa very common ele-
ment in Hispanic culture for many centuries and especially
important in this celebrationis highlighted nowadays in
the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults: godparents walk
with the candidate, supporting him/her on the paths that
Christ leads us to, paths of privilege that come with their
own set of challenges. Along with the quinceaera, the
godparents proclaim that Christ is the light that dispels the
darkness, and of that they are witnesses.
The recording of the songproduced by Albert Coppo
(a fellow composer from Miami)is a mix of rhythms. It
boasts South American sounds and elements but also
has a distinct contemporary feel. The bass drum and
cajn provide the foundation for the string instruments and
the piano, which makes for an interesting mix of rural and
modern sounds.

Celebremos con alegra la festa de san Pedro, el prncipe
de los Apstoles y de san Pablo, el Apstol de los gentiles,
porque ellos nos trasmitieron el Evangelio de Cristo.
PRIMERA LECTURA Hechos 3, 110
Pedro y Juan subieron al templo. Cuando iban a entrar, un
enfermo les pidi limosna. Pedro invoc el nombre de
Jesucristo y le orden caminar. El hombre qued curado
y entr al templo caminando, saltando y alabando a Dios.
As Peter and John enter the temple, a crippled beggar asks
for alms. Peter implores the name of Jesus and instructs
the man to walk. Immediately the man is healed, and
he enters the temple rejoicing and praising God. Those
assembled are struck with astonishment.

Yo quiero acercarme a ti, Seor, y saciarme de gozo en tu
presencia.
Como la lluvia hace brotar frutos de la tierra, la Palabra de
Dios dar frutos en quienes la escuchan.
Just as rain and snow come down from heaven and do
not return until the whole earth is watered and fruitful, so
shall the word of the Lord go out to do Gods will and
accomplish Gods purpose.
La semilla cay en tierra buena y dio fruto.
The seed that falls on good ground will yield a fruitful
harvest.

El mundo ser liberado de la corrupcin y recibir la
gloria que corresponde a los hijos de Dios.
Paul told the Romans that the whole created world eagerly
awaits the revelation of Gods children. The world will be

Aunque el Seor es todopoderoso, juzga con moderacin
y gobierna con miramientos. l nos ensea a actuar con
bondad y nos permite arrepentirnos de nuestros pecados.
Though powerful, the Lord judges with mercy and gov-
erns with care. God teaches people kindness, hope, and
repentance.

Lord, you are good and forgiving.
El apstol escribi: El Espritu nos ayuda en nuestra debi-
lidad, porque nosotros no sabemos pedir lo que nos con-
viene; pero el Espritu mismo intercede por nosotros con
gemidos que no pueden expresarse con palabras.
Paul reminded the Romans that the Spirit helps Gods
people in their weakness and intercedes for them.
En la parbola del trigo y la maleza, stos se dejan crecer
juntos. Al cosechar, la maleza se separa y se quema,

Jesus told the crowd the parable of the wheat and the
weeds, the parable of the mustard seed, and the parable of
the yeast. Through parables, he encouraged his disciples,

Pdeme lo que quieras. Salomn pidi sabidura para
gobernar a Israel. El Seor, complacido, le cumpli el
deseo.
God appeared to Solomon in a dream and offered him
whatever he desired. The king requested wisdom to
govern Israel well. The Lord granted the request.

Sabemos que Dios dispone todas las cosas para el bien de

All things work for good for people who love God. The
Lord God knows, predestines, justifes and glorifes people
and calls them to share Christs love.
El Reino de los cielos es como un tesoro escondido. Los
que lo encuentren vendern todo para conseguirlo. Todo
maestro de la Ley que se ha hecho discpulo del Reino de
los cielos se parece a un padre de familia que de sus reser-

Jesus said that the reign of heaven is like a buried treasure
and a fne pearl. Those who fnd it sell all they have to

El Seor dice: vengan por agua! Dios invita al pueblo
a pedir trigo, vino y leche. Dice: Prstenme atencin,
vengan a m, escchenme y vivirn.
The Lord invites all who are thirsty to Come to the water!
God asks the people to take heed, that they may drink
wine and milk, eat well, and delight in the rich fare of the
everlasting covenant.
Abres t la mano, Seor, y nos sacias de favores.
The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs.
Nada, ni siquiera la muerte, podr separarnos del amor de
Dios, que encontramos por medio de Cristo.
Nothing, not even death, can separate the faithful from the
love of God in Christ Jesus.

El hombre no vive solamente de pan, sino de toda palabra

Grandes multitudes siguieron a Jess. l, compadecido,

Huge crowds followed Jesus. He felt compassion for them
and healed the sick. He saw that they were hungry and,

Elas escuch la voz del Seor. El Seor no estaba en el
huracn ni en el terremoto o el rayo, sino en un suave
murmullo. Cuando Elas escuch al Seor, se tap la cara
con su manto, sali de la cueva y se par a su entrada.
Elijah the prophet heard the Lords voice not in wind,
not in an earthquake nor in fre, but in a tiny whisper.
When he heard the Lord, Elijah hid his face in his cloak,

Misas Bilinges: Ofrecernos como sacrificio
Bilingual Masses: Offering ourselves as a sacrifice
Una misa bilinge es una experiencia de fe maravillosa,
enriquecedora, nica, edificante y transformadora. En
Cantemos al Seor: La Msica en el Culto Divino
(ocpenespanol.org/21203) los obispos estadounidenses
nos dicen: En la celebracin de la Misa, los fieles
hacen presente la nacin santa, el pueblo adquirido y el
sacerdocio real, para dar gracias a Dios y para ofrecer la
vctima inmaculada, no slo por manos del sacerdote, sino
juntamente con l, y para aprender a ofrecerse a s mismos
(24; cfr. Instruccin General del Misal Romano). Pensemos
por un momento en lo que significa ofrecernos a nosotros
mismos. Para m, una manera de ofrecerme a m mismo
es hacer a un lado mis preferencias y pensar primero en
mi familia parroquial, contribuir al culto comunitario
incorporndome a la oracin corporativa elevada en Misa
y pensar en las necesidades de mis hermanos y hermanas
feligreses cuando intentamos unir nuestras voces para dar
gloria a Dios como el cuerpo mstico de Jesucristo. La
Instruccin General del Misal Romano tambin nos dice
que los miembros de la asamblea reunida deben evitar toda
apariencia de singularidad o de divisin, teniendo presente
que tienen en el cielo un nico Padre, y por esto, todos son
hermanos entre s (95). Este principio es particularmente
importante cuando hay misas bilinges o multiculturales, ya
que la misa no se trata de ti o de m, sino de nosotros. Si en
algn momento no entendemos lo que se habla o se canta
en la misa porque se est usando otro idioma, recordemos
que alguien ms est siendo bienvenido al banquete en ese
preciso momento. As, de ese modo, nuestro sacrificio se
convierte en una ofrenda significativa de nosotros mismos
y somos transformados por el Espritu Santo con palabras y
de maneras que, aunque parezcan incomprensibles al odo y
diferentes a nuestra manera de hacer las cosas, nos revelan
el rostro y el amor de Dios y nos hacen sentir su presencia
en nuestro prjimo. Hermanos y hermanas, sigamos
mostrando amor por el culto multicultural contagioso y
atractivo a los dems.
Santiago Fernndez se ha desempeado como msico pastoral por ms de veinticinco
aos en varias parroquias y ministerios. Actualmente, es director del ministerio de
msica en la parroquia de San Damin de Molokai en Pontiac, Michigan. Ha lanzado
tres lbumes con OCP, Ven y Sgueme (ocpenespanol.org/20073), Un Canto Nuevo
(ocpenespanol.org/20728) y Unidos (ocpenespanol.org/30107210), editado en cola-
boracin con Jesse Manibusan.
A bilingual Mass is a wonderful, enriching, unique,
edifying, and transforming faith experience for those who
take the opportunity to attend. In Sing to the Lord: Music
in Divine Worship (ocp.org/20995), the US bishops
clearly state, quoting the GIRM, that In the celebration
of Mass the faithful form a holy people, a people whom
God has made his own, a royal priesthood, so that they
may give thanks to God and offer the spotless Victim not
only through the hands of the priest but also together
with him, and so that they may learn to offer themselves
(24; cf. General Instruction of the Roman Missal [GIRM]
95). So what does it mean to offer ourselves? To me,
one way of offering myself is to put aside my personal
preferences and think of my parish family firstto
contribute to communal worship by truly incorporating
myself to the communal prayer at Mass and think of the
needs of my fellow parishioners as we strive to unify our
voices and give glory to God as the one mystical body of
Christ. The GIRM further tells us that the members of the
gathered liturgical assembly must shun any appearance
of singularity or division, keeping in mind that they have
only one Father in heaven and that hence all are brothers
or sisters one to the other (95). This is especially
important in bilingual or multicultural worship settings
because Mass is not about you or meit is about us.
Whenever we briefly stop understanding spoken or sung
words at Mass because another language is being used,
lets remember that someone else is being welcomed at
the table at that very moment. In this way our sacrifice
becomes a meaningful offering of ourselves and we are
transformed by the Holy Spirit through words and in ways
that, although incomprehensible to our ears, reveal to
us the face and the love of God, making his presence
felt through our neighbor. Brothers and sisters, let us
continue to show a love for multicultural worship that is
contagious and enticing to others.
