Your Culture For You.
Between Homecoming 2014, the Commonwealth Games (which runs
from 23 Jul) and the R*ferend*m, there are plenty of reasons to be
contemplating what our culture means to us and regardless of your
view on any of the above, you cannot fail to acknowledge how the
Highland Games loom very large in our local culture. The Inverness
Highland Games - established exactly one million years ago (check p25
for accuracy), is at the Northern Meeting Park this year on Sat 19 July.
Inverness is developing plenty of new cultures and traditions - but this
shouldnt be at the expense of our wealth of heritage, otherwise theres no
net gain. Rediscover your inner Highlander and get along. Read all about
it in our 4-page pull-out in the centre pages.
Inside this issue WIN a 300 Recliner from Lochgorm, an Inverness
Caledonian Thistle Mascot Pack from new shirt sponsor Subway, and
tickets to see the new Transformers movie at Vue with FREE popcorn.
We really are good to you, arent we? On top of all that, heres what you can
read about on the pages with the words on:
ART: Two very dierent shows both with slightly frivolous titles: Nonsense
Works from the emerging Tracey I Campbell and Accidentally Deliberate
featuring the well-established brilliance of Eugenie Vronskaya. | FILM: July is
blockbuster month - with new Transformers, Planet of The Apes, How To
Train Your Dragon and a quirky Marvel outing in Guardians Of The Galaxy
and many great non-blockbusters too! | KIDS: Two great live shows featuring
none other than longstanding faves The Grualo and Scooby Doo |
MUSIC: Some big folk & world music performances including Saltshforty,
The Two Man Gentlemen Band, Pacic Curls and Funky Shepherds |
SPECIALS: The Inverness Highland Games sees a bunch of chunky bekilted
fellas hit town and another one visits Ironworks in the form of dead famous
wrestling man Rowdy Roddy Piper. | SPORT: They dont come much tougher
than the Great Glen Ultra Marathon, whilst for the softies, theres a host of
pre-season football friendlies featuring all your favourite clubs. | THEATRE:
Summer riches include A Midsummer Nights Dream at Cawdor, Peter Pan
(with skateboards!?) at Brodie - and both Elaine C Smith and the Ladyboys Of
Bangkok at Eden Court - although apparently not together. Shame
Dont just sit there! Visit: whatsonhighlands.com

DOUBLE THE FUN TO MARK 150TH ANNIVERSARY
OF THE NORTHERN MEETING PARK
Highland Games have been staged in Inverness since 1822,
but this year Inverness is going to be playing host to TWO
Highland Games one in July and one in September. The
reason for this can be traced back to 1863 when so many
folk wanted to attend the Games organised by the Northern
Meeting that it was decided that something had to be done to
avoid a repeat of the chaotic scenes that were experienced.
The following year, 1864, a very special sporting arena,
Northern Meeting Park the worlds oldest Highland Games
stadium opened its doors for the very rst time. 2014 marks
the 150th Anniversary of the opening of this much loved
venue on the banks of the River Ness which over the years
has seen everything from the legendary Victorian Heavy
Donald Dinnie to the Olympic Torch to the start of a brand
new Millennium greeted with enthusiastic cheers.
UNDER 12S GO FREE!
The July Games will see Games Chieftain Provost ALEX
GRAHAM unveil a very special commemorative plaque
which we feel will become a must see for Highland Games
fans to visit in years to come; and to ensure that as many
youngsters as possible get the chance to enjoy a little piece
of sporting history; the Games Committee have decided
that all Under-12s can come in for free!
TRACK, FIELD, PIPING & DANCING
The programme of events in July will feature a full
programme of track and eld athletics with the Inverness
Harriers once again expected to provide some rst class
competition for everyone to enjoy.
The Inverness Piping Society will once again ensure that
the Games Solo Piping Competition is one of the most
keenly contested in the North of Scotland.
The Highland Dancing competitions at the Inverness
Highland Games are one of the largest to be found
in the North with the Highland Fling, the Sword Dance
and the Mass Highland Fling at the Opening Ceremony
guaranteed to delight and watch out for the special Eve
of Games Highland Dancing Display in Inverness Town
House 78pm organised by the Elizabeth Fraser School of
Highland Dancing.
HEAVIES
The Heavies programme will commence with the Hammer
Throwing at 12.30 and will climax with the ever popular
Tossing The Caber at around 5pm. The event will end
with competitors stepping forward to attempt the 252lb
Stonemasons Stone one of the most di cult challenges
facing Heavies anywhere on the International circuit. This
years Games will also see the debut of the Forge Gym
Strongwoman event at the Games, and anyone who
witnessed the hugely successful Highlands Strongest
Woman contest earlier this year will know just how amazed
folk are going to be. Rumour has it that the competitors
have been secretly practising with Highland Games
Champion Sinclair Patience so dont be surprised to see
organiser Gavin Laird introducing one or two traditional
challenges during the course of the day - as if lifting a car
was not challenging enough.
MUSIC
In addition to all the athleticism on display, this is also a
chance to enjoy the best of Highland music and once
again Margo Maclennan of High Life Highland has gathered
together a fantastic programme of traditional music for
everyone to enjoy. The Games Committee are also delighted
to welcome the CAN-AMERICAN PIPES & DRUMS BAND
to Northern Meeting Park for the rst time and they will be
joining the Inverness Legion and Forres bands on the day.
Formed to tour Scotland in 2012 for the Queens Diamond
Jubilee Year, its members come from across Canada and the
United States. A huge hit when they last visited Inverness,
this is one band you dont want to miss!
CLAN VILLAGE
Throughout the day spectators will be able to explore a
number of interesting exhibitions around the Games eld
including a large clan village organised by the Association
of Highland Clans and Societies; and you can be assured
of the warmest of welcomes if you visit their marquee. If
you do not have a clan you will nd one and everybody is
being asked to sign up to volunteer to carry a torch at the
Associations spectacular Torchlight Procession through
the streets of Inverness on 12 September.
With all this and plenty more
this years INVERNESS HIGHLAND GAMES
are certain to be unmissable!

Highland Hospice have launched the
Project Build Appeal
to rebuild their In Patent Unit
The primary aim at Highland Hospice is to provide the
highest quality of care but the In Patient Unit is now over
25 years old and, at half the size suggested by current
guidelines, it no longer oers the standards of privacy,
dignity and choice patients and their families deserve.
Presently there are only four single bedrooms and two
shared rooms in the In Patient Unit, which is based on
Ness Walk in Inverness, and all of these rooms are too
small in size. There is also a lack of space for family
accommodation and bereavement support rooms.
After much thought and consideration it has been decided
that the most eective way to modernise the Hospice is to
demolish the existing unit and rebuild on the same site.
By rebuilding Highland hospice will be able to provide:
N A modern, bright and airy In Patient Unit with nine single
en-suite bedrooms and one shared room which will improve
patient choice and increase the levels of privacy and dignity
oered
N Much needed family accommodation
N Three dedicated counselling rooms for crucial
bereavement support services
N A sanctuary room located at the heart of the new hospice
which will provide a quiet space of contemplation for patients
and families
N The scope to develop a virtual hospice allowing greater
access to hospice care across the Highland community
It is hoped building work will begin in Spring 2015 and
take around 12 months to complete. As the hospice is
being rebuilt on the same site there will be a period of time
when the In Patient Unit will have to decant to a temporary
location at the County Community Hospital in Invergordon.
The total cost of bringing this project to life is 6.5million.
Highland Hospice has committed to funding 2million of
these costs from reserves which have been built up over
a number of years for this purpose, and the Project Build
Appeal has been launched to raise the remaining funds
required to build their new home.
For ideas and information on how to support Highland Hospice and get involved with the Project
Build Appeal please visit www.highlandhospice.org/projectbuild or contact the fundraising
team on projectbuild@highlandhospice.org.uk / 01463 246471

As you will see throughout this issue, July is the
time once again to don our kilts and muscles and
get down to the 150-yr-old Northern Meeting Park to
chuck ridiculously heavy items up in the air. Yes, its
the Inverness Highland Games and to celebrate,
we spoke with a real rising young star of the sport,
27 year old SINCLAIR PATIENCE
where were you born/where do you live? I was
born and live in Raigmore, raised in Tain, studied in
Edinburgh and am now based back in Inverness.
WHAT DO YOU DO FOR A LIVING? Having
previously worked as Development Ofcer with
Highland RFC, I am now based within Coach
Education for Scottish Rugby.
When did you start competing in highland
games heavy events? I have competed in the
Highland Games since the age of 16. I used to tour
the local Highland Games and compete in the junior
events before progressing to the Glenddich Under
25 league at the age of 20.
Who inspired you/have you any heavy heroes?
My father competed in the discus throw for Scotland
in the 1986 Commonwealth Games (the year I was
born) and then progressed to win the Professional
World Highland Games Championship, so he is very
much my sporting idol.
How much time do are you able to devote to
training? Between throwing and gym work I will
spend around 10 hours training per week then
during the summer months I compete almost every
weekend.
What is your favourite event? My favourite event
is the 28lb weight for distance. The objective is as
it sounds, using a rotational style, you throw a 28lb
weight as far as possible from behind a stop board.
Lots of timing and technique are required to excel
in this event.
What records do you hold? In 2010 I was
Scottish junior champion (Braemar Highland
Games) and World Amateur Champion, a title I won
in Minesotta USA. I am now working my way up
the professional ranks in Scotland and am one of
the top 3 athletes in the country. This season I will
represent Scotland in my rst professional World
Championships.
What is your biggest achievement to date?
Winning the World Amateur Championship.
What is your greatest unfullled ambition

What is your greatest unfullled ambition
games-wise? I would like to win the professional
World Highland Games Championship.
How many games will you compete in this
year? During the season I will compete in 20 30
Highland Games.
Favourite ever games? Since returning to the
Northern Meeting Park, Inverness is my favourite

Ken Kelman: Sheepish thoughts. . .
Driving along the A96 the other
week I noticed some sheep ambling
about in a eld which reminded me
that Id once assisted at the birth of
a set of twin lambs. This inevitably
got me thinking .. one .. why cant I
just look at the woolly animals and
admire them for what they are, why
must my brain insist on thinking
about everything? and; two did
I assist at the birthing of a pair of
lambs or did I assist at the birthing
of a sheep? My point being, in such a
situation, who is it that gets birthed?
Is the mother or the offspring? I
know what youre thinking - why not
just look it up in a dictionary? With
respect, might I remind you I was
driving along the A96 and at the time
there was no such tome available*.
The debate occupied much of my
internal monologue for most of the
journey from Nairn to Forres, then
I noticed that the Bervie Chipper
seemed to have re-opened. I swear
it had shut the last time I drove
past. Not only was it open but there
was, I think, a poster that seemed
to be offering some sort of loyalty
deal - buy 9 meals get the 10th
free, I thought it said. Immediately
and unbidden my mind moved on to
pondering the vast heap of sh and
chips youd have consumed by the
time you could take advantage of
such a deal. Its all very well drinking
4 cups of coffee to get the fth for
nothing, but NINE sh suppers? -
thats a serious amount of chippage
- by my reckoning over 7 pounds
of potato! (assuming an average
portion size of 13oz which is what
the internet tells me I can assume).
By the time this has all been thought
about and calculated Im out the
other side of Forres and back
amongst the elds of lambs. As I
watch them gambol another thought
strikes. You know that famous
painting of the dogs playing poker,
the one people either love or hate?
Yes you do - it was on the wall of that
lovely boarding house you stayed at
in Blackpool. Well, wouldnt it make
more sense if it were lambs playing
poker - then at least itd be a pun?
gambolling / gambling no?
