for sale. The reception is free and open to the public.
Many of the potters will be on hand to meet the public
and live music will be provided by the Log Cabin String
Band. Traditional folkware pottery will be available
along with more whimsical artistic creations. All sales
are cash and carry (SASI also accepts visa and MC).
Earth and Fire is sponsored by Historic Kings
Mountain Tourism and Development Authority and
Southern Arts Society. Southern Arts Society is located
in the old Southern Railway train depot and makes the
perfect setting to show off the time honored tradition
of pottery hand made from earth and fire.

~ 2014 I AM WOMAN COMPETITION ~
Saturday May 10 awards were presented at a
reception for I am Woman at Southern Arts Society in
Kings Mountain. This annual exhibit is dedicated to
womanhood or the essence of being a woman. Over 70
works of art were entered in this years competition by
artists from around the region. Judging the artwork was
Hank Foreman, of Appalachian State University in Boone,
NC where he serves as Director and Chief Curator of the
Turchin Center for the Visual Arts. Mr. Foreman selected
first, second and third place prizes along with three merit
awards.
First place went to Lynn Schilling for her watercolor
Sienna. I found the person in this work to be
overwhelmingly compelling This piece is very intimate
in a way that does not seem voyeuristic but instead
relays to each of us a bit about those tiny moments of
the human condition, said Mr. Foreman of Schillings
work.
Second place went to Linda Vista for her assemblage
From Glass Ones to Brass Ones.
Third place went to Valerie Kramer for her mixed
media piece The Handmaiden
Special recognition went to the three artists selected
for Merit Awards: Barbara ONeal Davis, Window
Dressing; Todd Baxter, Angela, Study I; and, Laurie
Schorr, Three-Sided Coin.
