The Pauline Haass Public Library will be open for business as
usual after the New Years holiday in 2015, but its governance
structure will be different.
The Lisbon Town Board voted to end its participation in the
joint library agreement with the village of Sussex once the agree-
ment ends on Dec. 31,2014. With Lisbon leaving the agreement,
the library will be overseen by the village of Sussex.
Under state law, local libraries are governed by a board
which includes representation from the local school district, citizen
representatives and the local municipal or town board.
The decision by the town will mean that Lisbon will not con-
tribute toward the library budget but instead will pay a county
library tax charged on local communities that dont operate
libraries.
Library and Sussex officials emphasized that there will likely
be little change to the actual library service.
The library will continue with business as usual, Library
Director Kathy Klager said. Klager said the village of Sussex has
committed to keeping the library an excellent library facility for all
its users.
Sussex Village Administrator Jeremy Smith said the village of
Sussex will pay approximately $56,000 more for library services
than the village paid this year as a result of Lisbon leaving the
library agreement.
The library services will largely remain unchanged and users
from Sussex and Lisbon and elsewhere in the region will likely see
no difference, Smith said.
The action by Lisbon is the latest step during negotiations in
which Lisbon sought to have Sussex contribute more toward the
funding formula.
Lisbon could no longer continue to spend over 12 percent of
our annual budget on the library. Most other municipalities in
Waukesha County, including the Village of Sussex, are generally

The Pauline Haass Public Library, serving
Sussex and Lisbon, will be installing person-
alized bricks in the area around the entrance
sculpture this fall. The deadline for ordering
is Friday, July 18.
Forms for brick purchase are available at
the library or online at www.phplonline.org
and can be personalized with two or three
lines up to 14 letters each. Many people
have purchased bricks as memorials to fami-
ly members, or in celebration of birthdays,
marriages and retirements. Others simply
include their own names. For ideas, Library
Director Kathy Klager suggests looking at
the bricks already in place or calling her at
(262) 246-5180 for help with wording or
spacing.
Each brick costs $110, and orders must
be pre-paid. Approximately $80 goes to
help the library purchase additional books
and other materials. Donors can specify
adult, young adult, or children's materials, or
simply designate the money to go to the area
of greatest need.
For ore information, contact the library,
N64 W23820 Main St., Sussex, at (262)
246-5180.

United Way in Waukesha County hosted a
ribbon cutting ceremony for the launch of
Waukesha Countys Ninth Born Learning Trail
at Oakwood Park in Menomonee Falls June
18. The ceremony was held at 4 pm and
despite the impending rain clouds the ceremo-
ny stayed dry. Community members in atten-
dance heard United Way in Waukesha
Countys Board Member, David Gilmartin,
and trail sponsor, Jeff Wagoner from GE
Capital, say a few words to commemorate the
occasion.
David Gilmartin, a resident of Menomonee
Falls and an employee of GE Healthcare, was
enthusiastic about the latest addition to the
amenities of the beautiful park that attracts,
joggers, sportsmen, and especially families.
He spoke first hand about the great support
our community receives from GE and this trail
being one of its contributions. GE Capital has
also sponsored another trail to be installed this
Fall which will help United Way reach its goal
of 10 Born Learning Trails in Waukesha
County; another achievement to be celebrated
in the future.
After the ribbon cutting Lori Hayes,
Director of Community Volunteering, with a lit-
tle help from some of the children, opened the
trail with a tour and demonstration of the signs.
She explained, Connecting leads to learning.
Children are eager to connect with the adults
in their lives, and it is through these relation-
ships that children gain the confidence and the
security they need to learn. We all could use
a little help with interacting with our youth.
The relationship you establish with the children
in your care is key to early learning. By walk-
ing the Born Learning Trail, its a great way to
tie a trip to this great park to even more fun.
The Born Learning Trails help parents,
grandparents, caregivers and the community
create quality, early-learning opportunities for
young children. Included in the trail are signs
with suggested activities for adults and chil-
dren to participate in together. For instance,
the Watch! Stop! Learn! Play! sign encourages
caregivers to follow the childs lead, building
the childs curiosity and confidence. This series
of learning activities is one that any adult can
play with young children at the park. Born
Learning is a national public engagement cam-
paign that helps parents, grandparents and
caregivers explore ways to turn everyday
moments into learning opportunities. For more
information, visit www.BornLearning.org The
United Way in Waukesha County offered this
opportunity and credits the Born Learning Trail
installation to its sponsor, GE Capital, who
continues to serve the community with funding,
resources, and volunteers. GE Capital volun-
teers installed the trail on Tuesday, June 10.
Partners of the Trail include the following
organizations: Village of Menomonee Falls
Park Board, GE Capital, and United Way in
Waukesha County.
With the addition of the Born Learning
Trail in Oakwood Park there are now nine
trails throughout Waukesha County with the
plans for a tenth in the works.

Born Learning Trail dedicated in Falls
Marcy Elementary School families collected jars of peanut butter and jelly to con-
tribute to Sussex Outreach Services (SOS) Food Pantry. The Marcy fifth grade
Leadership Group organized this service project among others throughout the
year. Marcy Elementary School is located at W180 N4851 Marcy Road,
Menomonee Falls. Marcy students in photo are (back, from left ) Lakyn Graves,
Gretchen Kabitzke, Mason Woods, Ella Chevalier, Anna Kurhajec and Michael
Sfanos, (front) Julianne Claas, Elizabeth Prell and Chloe Zabel. Submitted photo.
Marcy students collect food for SOS
spending in the 6 to 8 percent range, Lisbon
Town Chairman Matthew Gehrke said in a
response to questions from the Express News.
Gehrke indicated the decision by Pauline
Haass Library Board to file a lawsuit seeking
control of the Pauline Haass assets (65 acres
of farmland) played a factor in the town end-
ing the joint agreement.
The lawsuit by the Library Board removed
any possibility of Lisbon voting in favor of a
long term agreement and as a result it was
known that the current agreement would be
terminated at Year End 2014, Gehrke said.
The Library Board knew this and moved for-
ward with their lawsuit purposely.
Klager said she couldnt comment on the
decision to proceed with the lawsuit because it
was a decision made by the Library Board.
Smith added that as disagreements contin-
ued, the village has prepared to operate the
library on its own.
The Library Board will provide direction
for the future of the Pauline Haass Public
Library and due to planning by the village
because the town has been demonstrating
they intended to leave for years we dont have
to make any significant changes with the
switch in funding sources, Smith said.

Kids from Wisconsin performing in
Oconomowoc July 25
As the official Premiere Musical
Ambassadors for the State of Wisconsin, Kids
from Wisconsin has been delighting audiences
throughout Wisconsin and across the country
for 45 years. From the diversity of vocal talent
and outstanding instrumentals to the stunning
choreography and costumes, KIDS continue to
be one of the most popular youth music groups
in the Midwest. Their high-energy, exciting per-
formances feature 20 singer/dancers and a 13-
piece show band, all chosen from among the
States finest musicians between the ages of 15
and 20.
The Kids from Wisconsin will be performing
at: the Oconomowoc Arts Center, 641 E. Forest
STreet, at 7:30 p.m. July 25
Tickets can be obtained by calling the
Oconomowoc Arts Center box office at (262)
560-3172 (Closed June 30 to July 14). Hours
are from noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday
and Friday and noon to 6 p.m. Thursday. For
more information, go to www.theoac.net.
This performance is made possible by the
Oconomowoc Kiwanis Breakfast Club.
Proceeds to be used for community project
It is not just their spectacular performances
that make KIDS a crowd favorite. The Kids are
known for helping charitable organizations and
service clubs by holding benefit concerts that
raise thousands of dollars.
As the 2014 theme Cant Hold US! sug-
gests, the popularity of the KIDS continues to
grow. Although similar to show choir this may
not seem like something for all types of audi-
ences, popular shows such as Glee have shat-
tered this stereotype. Glee, which focuses on
how show choir inspires people of all ages and
backgrounds, has helped KIDS become even
more popular across Wisconsin.

United Way in Waukesha County would
like to invite volunteers to the following volunteer
opportunities:
Education Support - Waukesha
There are endless opportunities in the
Education Department for volunteers. As a tour
guide at the Museum, you'll be offering children
and adults an exciting view of history and a
new understanding of our community. Do back-
ground research or assist with craft preparations
for various programs. Volunteers are an inte-
gral part of the Waukesha County Historical
Society & Museum. Volunteers assist in all areas
of Museum operations. The work is not hard,
only rewarding! All needed information and
training is provided and schedules are flexible.
Help Make Happy and Healthy
Smiles Waukesha County
Volunteer dentists, dental assistants, dental
hygienists and others are needed and all are
welcome to help us. As a volunteer, you will be
helping to provide dental services to those who
are less fortunate and who have not been able
to afford dental care. The WCCDC dental team
is experienced, friendly, accommodating, will-
ing to assist volunteers; making the experience
stress free. The work environment is meticulous,
complete with state of the art technology. Low
income families tend to have higher rates of
tooth decay and have greater difficulty access-
ing ongoing basic dental care. Low income fam-
ilies in Waukesha County are not immune to this
problem.
Special Needs Teachers Assistant
Menomonee Falls
Are you passionate about working with chil-
dren with special needs? If so, please come join
the team at Childrens Community Center.
Childrens Community Center is a full inclusion
preschool and childcare center located in
Menomonee Falls. As a full inclusion center we
are looking for adults to volunteer in our class-
rooms to help provide a one on one opportuni-
ty for a child with special needs. Often, when
children with special needs receive one on one
time they are better able to get their needs met
and be successful throughout their day. As a vol-
unteer some of your responsibilities would
include: playing with children, helping a child to
complete an activity, interacting with the child at
circle time, encouraging participation in gross
motor activities, assisting with snack or meal
time, or providing a break for a child.
