Sports Ministry derecognises IABF
The Sports Ministry of India has derecognised the Indian Amateur Boxing Federation (IABF)
with an immediate effect on 1 April because of the boxing bodys refusal to comply with its
directives on holding a re-election.This ban can be considered as a second blow to IABF, as
earlier it was terminated by its international parent body, International Boxing Association
(AIBA). AIBA terminated on the allegations of rigged elections and corruption.Earlier, it was
suspended provisionally by the Ministry in December 2012. Its suspension came with a
direction to hold fresh elections and make its combination complaint with National Sports
Code.

RBIs First Bi-monthly Monetary Policy Statement 2014-15
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on 1 April released it first Bi-monthly Monetary Policy
statement 2014-15 keeping the repo rate unchanged at 8 per cent.The CRR has been kept at 4
per cent.On the basis of an assessment of the current and evolving macroeconomic situation, it
has been decided to :-
* keep the policy repo rate under the liquidity adjustment facility (LAF) unchanged at 8.0 per
cent;
* keep the cash reserve ratio (CRR) of scheduled banks unchanged at 4.0 per cent of net
demand and time liability (NDTL); and
* increase the liquidity provided under 7-day and 14-day term repos from 0.5 per cent of NDTL
of the banking system to 0.75 per cent, and decrease the liquidity provided under overnight
repos under the LAF from 0.5 per cent of bank-wise NDTL to 0.25 per cent with immediate
effect.
Consequently, the reverse repo rate under the LAF will remain unchanged at 7.0 per cent, and
the marginal standing facility (MSF) rate and the Bank Rate at 9.0 per cent.

World Autism Awareness Day Celebrated Across The world
The seventh annual World Autism Awareness Day 2014 was celebrated across the world on 2
April 2014. The day is celebrated to raise fund and to create awareness about autism. On this
day, Autism Speaks organisation celebrated Light It Up Blue. Light It Up Blue is a global
initiative that kicks-off Autism Awareness Month and helps raise awareness about autism. The
United Nations General Assembly unanimously adopted the resolution on Autism on 18
December 2007 and decided to designate 2 April as World Autism Awareness Day. The
resolution was adopted to highlight the need to help improve the lives of children and adults
who suffer from the disorder. As a result, the first World Autism Awareness Day was celebrated
on 2 April 2008.

Viswanathan Anand Raises To No. 3 In FIDE World Chess Rankings
Viswanathan Anand ranked World number 3 in the rating list released by FIDE . Anand with
the Victory at the Candidates Tournament held in Russia in March 2014 has moved five places
ahead from 8 to 3 with 2785 Elo points. According the rating list, Magnus Carlsen of Norway
with Elo points 2881 ranks no 1 and Levon Aronian of America with 2812 ranks 2.

R Gandhi Appointed Deputy Governor of RBI
The government has appointed R Gandhi as deputy governor of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on
3 April. Gandhi has been handed over a three year term, and replaces Anand Sinha who retired
from his post in January. Prior to this Gandhi was an executive director of the central bank. A
deputy governor could be appointed for a maximum of 5 years or till the age of 62 whichever is

earlier.The RBI now has four Deputy Governors KC Chakrabarty, HR Khan, Urjit Patel and R.
Gandhi.

D K Pathak Appointed As The New Director General of BSF
Union Government appointed senior IPS officer D K Pathak as the new Director General of the
Border Security Force (BSF). BSF is countrys largest border guarding force. His name for the
post of DG was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) headed by
Prime Minister Mamohan Singh. Pathak is a 1979-batch officer of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre.
Prior to the appointment of DG, he was posted as the Special DG and was also officiating as
the DG since 1 March 2014. The post of the DG of BSF was vacant since 28 February 2014
when Subhash Joshi retired from the post of DG. Pathak had served in another paramilitary
CRPF as its chief of operations in Jammu and Kashmir and he has also spent stints in various
positions in his cadre states of Assam and Meghalaya.

HAL Received The Most Efficient Navratna Award 2013
Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) received the Most Efficient Navratna Award for the year
2013. It received the award at the 5th Dalal Street Investment Journal Awards ceremony held
in New Delhi. The award was collected by the Chairman of HAL, Dr. R K Tyagi.The awards were
presented to the various PSUs in different categories in recognition of their performance and
contribution to the Indian economy.The award was given to the company for the measure it has
taken on various fronts such as R&D, modernization, customer initiatives, quality and thrust
given on indigenization.

Europe Launches Environment Satellite
Europe has launched the first in a constellation of hi-tech satellites designed to monitor Earth
for climate change and environmental damage and help in disaster relief operations. Sentinel-
1A, a satellite designed to scan the Earth with cloud-penetrating radar, had lifted off at 2102
GMT aboard a Soyuz rocket from Kourou, French Guiana . The 2.2-tonne satellite is the first of
half-a-dozen orbital monitors that will be built and launched under the $5.19-billion
Copernicus project, a joint undertaking of ESA and the European Union (EU).

Indian Cricket Captain MS Dhoni has won United Kingdoms 2014 Asian award for outstanding
achievement in sports.The award was announced at Londons at The Grosvenor House Hotel.

Cambodias World Heritage Angkor Wat gets Googles Street View
Google launched Street View imagery of the iconic site of Angkor Wat and some 100
surrounding historic temples on Google Maps.The Google Maps feature allows web users to
explore 100 of Cambodias historic temples online in 360-degree panoramic imagery.The
Angkor Wat project was developed with the help of the Apsara Authority of the Kingdom of
Cambodia. APSARA National Authority is an organisation created for the protection and
maintenance of Angkor.

Koyal Rana won the coveted Miss India 2014 crown at the 51st edition of the pageant. She was
crowned winner among 24 gorgeous contestants from across the country. Miss India 2013
Navneet Kaur Dhillion, and Miss World 2013 Megan Young felicitated Rana with the crown at
the beauty pageant. Jhataleka Malhotra, was crowned first runner-up by Sobhita Shulipala,
and Gail Nicole Da Silva was crowned second runner-up by Zoya Afroz. Koyal Rana hails from
Jaipur, Jhataleka from Mumbai, and Gail from Goa.Rana will represent India at the Miss
World 2014 beauty pageant this year.

Hakamada Presented with WBC honorary Championship Belt
The World Boxing Council on 6 April presented an honorary championship belt to Iwao
Hakamada, who was recently released from jail following a court decision to hold a retrial for
him over robbery, murder and arson in 1966, for which he was sentenced to death. A
presentation ceremony for Hakamada, a former Japanese professional boxer, took place at a
Tokyo gymnasium where WBC boxing matches were held. His elder sister, Hideko, received the
belt from WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman on behalf of her 78-year-old brother, who is now
hospitalized.

Indian Army Successfully Test-Fired BrahMos Missile
The Army on 7 April successfully test-fired an advanced version of 290 km range supersonic
cruise missile BrahMos as part of a user trial at Pokhran test range in Rajasthan. The missile
was launched by a mobile autonomous launcher deployed in full configuration with mobile
command post at the ranges. The launch was successful and the missile hit the designated
target. Both the Army and Navy have already inducted the missile, developed by India in
partnership with Russia.

World Health Day 2014 Observed Across The World
World Health Day 2014 was observed across the world on 7 April 2014. The theme for 2014s
World Health Day is Vector-borne diseases. The theme, also dubbed by the WHO as Small
bite, big threat, will highlight dangers and threats from some of the most commonly known
vectors such as mosquitoes, sand flies, bugs, ticks and snails. The day provides an
opportunity for individuals to get involved in activities that can lead to better health.

Jhumpa Lahiris Lowland Shortlisted For Top UK prize
Pulitzer Prize-winning Indian American novelist Jhumpa Lahiris Lowland has been
shortlisted for the 2014 Baileys Prize, the UKs only annual book award for fiction written by a
woman. Lowland published in 2013 is a book set in Kolkata and Rhode Island in the US and
narrates a story about the lives of two brothers (Subhash and Udayan), their choices and their
fate. Earlier, the book was also shortlisted for Man Booker Prize.

Ravi Chauhan Named SAP India MD
Ravi Chauhan was appointed as Managing Director for SAP India. He will take the charge
immediately. He will report directly to Adaire Fox-Martin, President of SAP Asia Pacific Japan.
He had joined SAP after four years at Juniper Networks, where he had last served as Managing
Director for India and South Asia. Before Juniper, Chauhan held leadership roles at Nortel
Networks. SAP was founded in Walldorf, Germany in 1972 by five ex-IBM engineers. SAP
stands for Systeme, Andwendungen, Produkte in der Datenverarbeitung which translated to
English means Systems, Applications, Products in Data Processing.

Sachin Tendulkar Adorns Cover of Wisden Cricketers Almanack
Batting legend Sachin Tendulkar, who quit international cricket last year after an illustrious
24-year long career, adorned the covers of the 151st edition of the Wisden Cricketers
Almanack. The 40-year-old cricketer is the first Indian to feature on the cover of the Almanack.
He was earlier chosen to feature on the cover of the second edition of the Wisden India
Almanack. The 2014 edition of Wisden Cricketers Almanack will be published in London on 9
April 2014.

World Bank Projects 5.7% Growth For India In 2014-15
The World Bank on 9 April projected an economic growth rate of 5.7 per cent in 2014-15 for
India on the back of a more competitive exchange rate and many large investments going
forward. Another multilateral agency IMF had on 8 April 2014 forecast that Indian economy
would recover from 4.4 per cent growth in 2013 to 5.4 per cent in 2014. In its twice-a-year
South Asia Economic Focus, the World Bank forecast that economic growth in the region
would rise to 5.8 per cent in 2015 from 5.2 per cent this year and 4.8 percent last year.

R Chandrasekaran Takes Over As NASSCOM chairman
R Chandrasekaran, Executive Vice-Chairman of Cognizant India, is taking over as Chairman of
software industry body National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM)
from Krishnakumar Natarajan, CEO and MD of mid-sized IT firm Mindtree. Nasscoms
Executive Council appointed BVR Mohan Reddy, Founder, Chairman and Managing Director of
Infotech Enterprises, as Vice-Chairman.

Anand Sinha Committee Recommends Benchmark For Floating Interest Rate
A Reserve Bank of India (RBI) committee suggested a benchmark floating interest rate,
especially for home loans, to bring greater transparency in the pricing of credit. The committee
headed by former RBI Deputy Governor Anand Sinha on 10 April released Draft Report on
Working Group on Pricing of Credit. As per the report the Indian Banks Association (IBA) may
develop a new benchmark for floating interest rate products, namely, the Indian Banks Base
Rate (IBBR), which may be collated and published by IBA on a periodic basis.

Justice RM Lodha is new Chief Justice of India
Justice Rajendra Mal Lodha has been appointed as the next Chief Justice of India (CJI) and he
will assume his charge on 27 April 2014. Justice Lodha is the senior-most judge of the apex
court after CJI P Sathasivam. He will have a brief tenure of five months as the Chief Justice as
he is scheduled to retire on 27 September 2014. Justice Lodhas name was recommended as
the next CJI by Justice Sathasivam.

British Queen Confers Knight Grand Cross On Ratan Tata
Ratan Tata, the former chairman of the Tata Group which is one of the largest employers in
Britain, has been honoured by Queen Elizabeth with a GBE (Knight Grand Cross), one of the
UKs highest civilian awards. Ratan Tata is the only Indian among five foreigners to be awarded
as part of the Honorary British Awards to Foreign Nationals for 2014, others including
Japanese and Greek nationals for services to economic and cultural ties with the UK.

Veteran Film Lyricist Gulzar Chosen For Dadasaheb Phalke Award 2013
Veteran film lyricist and director Gulzar has been chosen for the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for
the year 2013. This is Indias highest award in cinema, given annually by the government. He
was also awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2004, and the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2002. He
has also won the Academy Award for the best original score for Jai Ho from Slumdog
Millionaire, which he shared with AR Rahman. The same song has also won him a Grammy
award for the best song written for a motion picture, television or other visual media.

SBI launched Twitter Handle Account
State Bank of India (SBI) launched its Twitter handle account. This follows earlier launch of
SBI account on Facebook on the 7th November, 2013 and on YouTube on the 23rd January,
2014 which now allows the customers to have access through all the major social media
channels.Mid-sized private sector lender Kotak Mahindra Bank had launched twitter-linked
current accounts in March 2014.

The Accidental Prime Minister: The Making and Unmaking of Manmohan Singh written by
Dr. Sanjaya Baru. The book has highlighted the difference between the good governance and
bad governance by comparing UPA regime under Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and NDA
regime under Atal Viharee Vajpayee. Sanjaya Baru was the media advisor of the Prime
Minister, Manmohan Singh between 2004 and 2008.

RIL, SBI, Tata Motors Among 100 Most Influential Asian Companies
Three Indian firms, including Reliance Industries, have made it to the list of 100 most
influential Asian companies compiled by Roland Berger Strategy Consultants. Mukesh Ambani-
led Reliance Industries ( RIL) bagged the 77th position in the top 100 most influential Asian
companies ranking for 2014 while Tata Motors and State Bank of India ( SBI) were at 79th and
80th places respectively. The list is being topped by Samsung Electronics followed by Hyundai
(second) Toyota (third), Hitachi (fourth) and Sony (fifth). The ranking is based on indicators
including corporate revenue, growth, innovation, research, brand value, global footprint and
social responsibility.

Baroda Won Syed Mushtaq Ali Cricket T20 Title
Baroda won the National Syed Mustaq Ali Cricket T20 Trophy title after defeated Uttar Pradesh
in the final match by three runs on 14 April at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Earlier in
2012, Baroda won the title at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai.

UK and Ireland Scientists Use Stem Cells To Grow Red Blood Cells
Scientists in the UK and Ireland have successfully used stem cells to grow large numbers of red
blood cells in the laboratory and are now preparing to test them in human trials. The process
involves growing trillions of stem cells and then using growth factors and other substances,

Supreme Court Recognizes Transgenders As Third Gender
The Supreme Court of India, in a landmark judgment on 15th April 2014, created the third
gender status for transgenders. A bench of Supreme Court comprising Justice KS
Radhakrishnan and AK Sikri in its decision had directed the center and state governments to
take essential steps for bringing the community into the mainstream by providing adequate
healthcare, education and employment.

India Born Poet Vijay Seshadri Won 2014 Pulitzer Prize
India-born poet Vijay Seshadri has won the prestigious 2014 Pulitzer Prize in the poetry
category for his collection of poems entitled 3 Sections published in 2013. The 98th annual
Pulitzer Prizes in Journalism, Drama, Letters and Music was announced by Columbia
University in New York. As a reward, Vijay would receive 10000 US dollar.

Arvind Mayaram Appointed As new Finance Secretary
Economic Affairs Secretary Arvind Mayaram has been appointed as the new Finance Secretary
on 15 April. Mayaram is a 1978 batch Rajasthan cadre IAS officer and has been holding charge

State Bank of India (SBI) launched Tablet (Tab) Banking service for opening Savings Bank
accounts and giving in-principle housing loan approval at the customers doorstep. State Bank
of India also launched e-KYC (Know your Customer) service. The three digital banking services
will be rolled out across the SBI network in a phased manner.

Admiral RK Dhowan Takes Over As new Navy Chief
Admiral Robin K Dhowan on 17 April took over as the 22nd Chief of Indian Navy. He is a
successor of Admiral DK Joshi, who resigned on 26 February 2014 taking moral responsibility
of the accident on INS Sindhuratna in Mumbai. Joshi was the first Defence forces Chief to
resign, since independence. Dhowan will have tenure of 25 months and will retire in May 2016.

Narendra Kothari Appointed As new Chairman of NMDC
Narendra Kothari has been appointed as the new Chairman of National Mineral Development
Corporation (NMDC) Limited on 17 April . Narendra Kothari is currently the CEO of SAILs
Burnpur plant in West Bengal. The countrys biggest iron ore miner NDMC has been
functioning without a full-time chairman and managing director ever since incumbent Rana
Som retired in December 2011.

World Heritage Day Across The World On 18 April 2014
The World Heritage Day was observed across the World on 18 April with the theme Heritage of
Commemoration. At present, there are 981 World Heritage Sites spread across 160 countries
(listed till January 2014). The heritage site across the world reflects the rich diversity of the
worlds cultural heritage. In context of India, the UNESCO on this day put 15 additional sites
located across the country in its tentative list of world heritage sites. Earlier, India had
submitted a list of 33 sites to UNESCO and this addition of 15 more sites in the tentative list
means that in future 48 sites of India are in the race being listed in the list of Heritage sites.

Earth-like Planet Kepler-186f Discovered By NASA
Using NASAs Kepler Space Telescope, astronomers have discovered the first Earth-size planet,
named Kepler-186f. The planet is located in the habitable zone and is a part of the Kepler-186
system, which is located about 500 light-years from Earth in the constellation Cygnus.The
discovery of Kepler-186f confirms that planets the size of Earth exist in the habitable zone of
stars other than our sun.

High Manganese Content Found In Goas Selaulim Reservoir
High manganese level has been detected in the Selaulim reservoir in Goa, which supplies
drinking water to more than half of the coastal State. The level of manganese detected in the
reservoir was 0.1 mg. This is less than the level of manganese content detected earlier and is
within safe limit. The reservoir has production capacity of 214 MLD of water, which is supplied
to entire South Goa and some parts of north district.

Sriprakash Presented with Asia Pacific Academy Award
Vice-Chancellor of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences Sriprakash KS has been
presented with the Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology outstanding services award for
prevention of blindness at the World Ophthalmic Conference in Tokyo.

Stanislas Wawrinka Won Monte Carlo Masters Title
Switzerlands Stanislas Wawrinka won the Monte Carlo Masters Tennis title on 20 April . He
defeated Roger Federer (Switzerland) in the Mens singles final. With this, the 29-year-old
Wawrinka has won his first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title. On the other hand the Doubles
trophy was won by Americas Bryan brothers, Bob and Mike. They defeated Ivan Dodig (
Croatia) and Marcel Melo (Brazil) in the final.

Lewis Hamilton Won Chinese F1 Grand Prix
Mercedes Lewis Hamilton won the Chinese F1 Grand Prix on 20 April 2014. With this win
Great Britains Hamilton won three races in a row for the first time in his career. His Mercedes
teammate Nico Rosberg (Germany) was second while third spot was claimed by Ferraris
Fernando Alonso of Spain. Force Indias Nico Hulkenberg (Germany) was sixth.

Meb Keflezighi Becomes First American Male To Win Boston Marathon Since 1983
Meb Keflezighi on 21 April became the first US male athlete to win the Boston Marathon in
three decades (since 1983). The women winner of the marathon was Rita Jeptoo of Kenya and
this was her second consecutive win at the Boston Marathon.

Gorla Rohini Sworn In As First Chief Justice of Delhi HC
Justice Gorla Rohini was on 21 April administered the oath of office as the first woman Chief
Justice of the Delhi High Court. Justice Rohini, who hails from Visakhapatnam suceeds
Justice N V Ramana, who had vacated the position in February following his elevation to the
Supreme Court. The former Andhra Pradesh High Court judge was administered the oath of
office and allegiance by Delhi Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung. Justice Rohini will be the 10th
woman judge of the 40 judges in the Delhi high court.

International Mother Earth Day Observed Across The World
Every year on 22 April, the world observes Earth Day, also known as International Mother
Earth Day to create awareness and also to support environmental protection. The earth day
2014 is focus on to build more green cities , gardens, maintain forest and greening the all the
regions in world wide. Earth Day was first celebrated in the year 1970, and is now coordinated
globally by Earth Day Network, and celebrated in more than 192 countries each year.

TCS joined Top 10 Global IT services Companies Club
The largest IT services provider of India, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), joined the league of
top 10 global IT services companies. TCS moved from the 13th position in 2012 to the 10th
spot in 2013. This was revealed by the HfS Research Survey on competitive landscape for IT
Services in 2013. According to the Survey, IBM leads the list and is followed by Fujitsu,
Hewlett-Packard, Accenture and NTT. India-based companies Cognizant, Infosys, Wipro and
HCL are at the 15th, 18th, 20th and 25th positions, respectively, all of them rising by one to
three spots compared to 2012.

India Successfully Test Fired Akash Missile
India on 23 April successfully test-fired indigenously developed surface-to-air Akash Missile
from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) launch complex-3 at Chandipur in Odisha coast. The 700-
kg all-weather missile can carry a 60-kg warhead at speeds of up to Mach 2.5. It can operate
autonomously and simultaneously engage and neutralize different aerial targets. It can be
launched from static or mobile platforms, enabling flexible deployment by the armed forces.

Japanese foods firm Nissin Foods on 23 April appointed Gautam Sharma, former Wrigley India
CEO , as the Managing Director (MD) of its Indian arm Indo Nissin.He is the first non-Japanese

BJPs prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi and Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal
are among the worlds 100 most influential people, according to a list published by the Time
magazine on 24 April. The Time has named the 100 most influential people in the world
without ranking them and four Indians have made it to the list. Apart from Modi and Kejriwal,
author Arundhati Roy and Coimbatore-based health activist Arunachalam Muruganantham
are also on the list.

Suresh Kumar Reddy Appointed As The First Ambassador To ASEAN
Union Ministry of External Affairs (MoEA) appointed Suresh Kumar Reddy as Indias first
Ambassador to the separate Indian Mission to Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)
& East Asia Summit. Suresh Kumar Reddy, an Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer of the 1991
batch, is currently serving as Ambassador of India to Iraq.

Lalit Gupta Committee on DIAL submitted its Report to DGCA
Lalit Gupta Committee on Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) submitted its report to
Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). It has recommended that airports near Delhi like
Jaipur, Lucknow and Amritsar should be upgraded to Category-IIIB level of Instrument
Landing System, which has a runway visibility range of 150 feet or almost near-zero visibility
condition. CAT IIIB is operational at the India Gandhi International Airport (IGIA).The
committee was set up by Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) in January 2014.

Saurav Ghosal, the famous Indian squash player won Dato Alex Lee Award 2013. He was
selected for the award by the Asian Squash Federation (ASF) for being the Outstanding Asian

Akash Missile Test-Fired Successfully
India on 26 April successfully conducted two rounds of trials of its indigenously developed
surface-to-air Akash missile as part of a user trial by the air force from the Integrated Test
Range (ITR) at Chandipur near Balasore in Odisha. Akash is a medium range surface-to-air
anti-aircraft defence system developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation
(DRDO) as part of the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme. The missile has a
strike range of 25 km and can carry a warhead of 60 kgs. It has the capability to target aircraft
up to 30 km away and is packed with a battery that can track and attack several targets
simultaneously.

Justice RM Lodha Sworn In As New Chief Justice of India
Justice RM Lodha was on 27 April sworn in as the new Chief Justice of India. He was
administered the oath of office by President Pranab Mukherjee. Chief Justice Lodha succeeds
Chief Justice P Sathasivam who demitted office on completion of his term on 26 April 2014.
Lodha will preside over the Supreme Court for five months as his term will come to an end 27
September, 2014.

John XXIII and John Paul II were canonized on 27 April by the Pope Francis at the Vatican on
27 April. Pope John XIII reigned from 1958-1963 and is perceived as a hero by the liberal
Catholics for having convened the Second Vatican Council. Pope John Paul II had reigned from
1978-2005. The event was also attended by retired Pope Benedict XVI which was seen as an
unprecedented event in Vaticans history.

Indian environment activist Ramesh Agrawal has been announced as the winner of the
prestigious Goldman Environmental Prize, and will accept the award at a lavish ceremony at

environmental movements organized by individuals around the world. Founded in 1990 by
Richard N. Goldman and his wife, Rhoda H. Goldman.

N R Narayana Murthy Presented Global Indian Award In Canada
Infosys executive chairman NR Narayana Murthy was presented with the 2014 Canada India
Foundation Chanchalani Global Indian Award . The award, carrying a trophy and a cash prize
of US$50,000, was presented to Murthy by Canadian Finance Minister Joe Oliver at the
Canada India Foundation (CIF) annual award gala dinner.

Finnish telecommunications equipment maker Nokia on 29 April appointed India-born Rajeev
Suri as its President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO). He replaces Stephen Elop, who has
returned to Microsoft as the executive vice president of its devices group. Suri joined Nokia in
1995 and headed the Asia Pacific region for NSN in 2007.

European Union Bans Import of Mangoes From India
The 28-member European Union has temporarily banned the import of Alphonso mangoes, the
king of fruits, and four vegetables from India from May 1, sparking protests from the Indian
community, lawmakers and traders. The recent decision by the groupings Standing Committee
on Plant Health came after 207 consignments of fruits and vegetables from India imported into
the EU in 2013 were found to be contaminated by pests such as fruit flies and other
quarantine pests.

Former Indian Air Force (IAF) chief Norman Anil Kumar Browne has been appointed Indias
next Ambassador to Norway. He will succeed R. K. Tyagi as Indias envoy in Norway. Browne
had served as IAF chief between 31 July 2011 and 31 December 2013.

Lt Gen C A Krishnan, a veteran infantry officer, on 30 April took over as the Deputy Chief of
Army Staff succeeding Lt Gen Narendra Singh who retired after a 40-year career in the force.In
the IAF, Air Marshal SBP Sinha took over as the Deputy Chief of the Air Staff.

Thailand To Hold New General Election On 20 July
Thailand caretaker government on 30 April agreed with the Election Commission (EC) to hold a
new general election on 20 July 2014. The agreement was reached during talks between the
government and EC at the Royal Thai Air Force Academy.
