All of the exercises are to.be sung, at first, with the vowels (a, o, e, etc); later, the printed syllables are to be used.
The various marks of expression (nuances) are not to be followed, at first, but each study should be sung many times, soft-
ly (piano) and without effort, but as legato as possible. The tempo should be governed by the ability and skill of the singer.
Breath should be taken at all the rests, and also as indicated by the sign (-*-). If found necessary, breath may also be taken
at the commas ii).
