BIM 001 INTRODUCTION TO BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING Fall Quarter

Background: This course will provide an introduction to the field of biomedical engineering with
examples taken from various areas of specialization within the discipline. The areas
span levels of organization from the molecular to the whole organism and include
nano-bioengineering, cellular and tissue engineering, systems and synthetic biology,
biomedical imaging, and biomechanics. The context in each case is the concept of the
engineering design cycle: (1) an important problem in the real world is identified, (2)
the relevant basic science and mathematics are identified and utilized, (3) engineering
solutions are proposed, (4) prototypes are built and tested to evaluate performance,
and (5) aspects in need of improvement are again addressed in terms of the basic
science and engineering design. A functional product or application evolves as the
cycle is repeated.

Objectives: To provide an appreciation for the wide variety of biomedical problems addressed by
biomedical engineers, to emphasize a quantitative approach to the solution of such
problems, and to note the broad social importance of addressing these problems.
Specifically, the student will gain (a) an appreciation for the broad education
necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic,
environmental and societal context, (b) a recognition of the need for, and the ability to
engage in lifelong learning, and (c) a knowledge of contemporary issues.
