The book “Fibre Failure and Wear of Materials” is a valuable contribution to the
field of Fiber Science and Technology. The book offers an important and exhaustive
overview of both single fiber failure and wear and breakdown of fiber products based on
twenty years of work by the authors at UMIST. Although classification of failure is a
difficult task, the authors have tackled the problem in a logical way.
The book begins with an excellent overview of single fiber failure including tensile
failure, fatigue and other kinds of failure of natural as well as man-made fibers. These
chapters are followed by five others on different aspects of fiber failure in materials
related to industry and consumer. These chapters deal with the case studies of materials
including domestic and industrial fabrics followed by fiber archeology and textile con-
servation, which are looked at superficially. In the final chapter a summary of the text
is presented with classification of breaks and some remarks on the diversity of forms
of break.
Though SEM provides only qualitative understanding of fiber failure, the authors
demonstrate the importance of this tool very successfully. The book is extensively il-
lustrated and is the first of its kind in the field.
This book is highly recommended for textile technologists, polymer, and fiber sci-
entists.
