1.3 Brief Description of the Instrument
1.3.1 Applications
The Measuring System GTM grasps simultaneously gas pressure and
temperature in the grinding-bowl during the grinding in Planetary Mills.
This allows a variety of statements to the description of the running
comminuting, mixing, activating, amorphysing or phase-conversion proc-
esses.
The measured gas-pressure gives information based on the
temperature-alterations in the grinding-bowl. It describes the
interaction of the implied gas with the surfaces created with
the grinding (adsorption and desorption of gases) with consid-
eration of the entire powder-volume.
The measuring of the basic temperature of the system with a
temperature-sensor enables one to consider the temperature-
influence on the gas-pressure in a limited scope.
Slow alterations of raw material states are a fundamental application
during the grinding process, like the amorphysing of metals. Such tests
can last for many hours. A fast data-reception is not necessary.
A second important application of high energy grinding is the attainment
of phase-development or alterations due to the mechanical alloying.
With this, extremely fast reactions can occur, which are measured and
recorded with a high measuring rate by the GTM-System.
1.3.2 Method of Operation
A micro-electronic silicon-membrane-pressure-sensor and a tempera-
ture-sensor are being used as detectors, which are installed in a modi-
fied grinding-bowl (transmitter module). The measurements from the
sensors are digitally transmitted to an unmoving receiver, which is exte-
rior to the mill.
In the receiver, the data-telegrams are checked for completeness and
correctness and are transferred over to a serial RS 232 - interface on a
pc.
The computer-program calculates the measurements from the received
data and displays it graphically in relation to the time. The measure-
ments can be saved and loaded into a spreadsheet and there proc-
essed.
The power supply is made up of rechargeable accumulators in the
transmitter module.
The data of two grinding-bowls can be analyzed simultaneously if two
transmitter modules are connected.

GTM-System page 3
1.3.3 The measure principle
The measure principle is based on it that pressure and temperature are
directly proportional in an ideal gas (volumes and mass of the gas is
steadily p =const * T).
The transition of the process-heat of the powder on the gas takes place
on reason the big powder-gas-contact-surface and the deep stirring
when grinding directly, so that is to be registered temperature-alterations
in the powder as pressure-alterations, approximately without time-
postponement.
The heat-depositing at the meal-cup leads to his relative temperature-
alteration. The temperature of the meal-receptacle-cover is measured
additionally to the measurement of this temperature-alteration.
1.3.4 Components of the measure principle
The measure principle consists of one or two station-modules, that Re-
ceiver and the measurement-representing - and storing software as well
as necessary accessories.

At all times keep in mind strict safety precautions while operat-
ing the instrument.
Unauthorized modification of the instrument or any part
thereof will result in the loss of the conformity to European di-
rectives which are asserted by Fritsch and the warranty.
Use the instrument only inside. The air must not contain any
electrical conductive dust.
Use the measuring system only in the Planetary mills of the
FRITSCH GmbH".
The instrument is not explosion-proof and is unsuitable to
grind or sieve materials which are explosive, combustible or
promote combustion.
Operate the GTM system within its set operating parameters.
Don't use the GTM system unsupervised.

Operating temperature of the receivers 20-40C.
Put the Receiver beside the PC, which will be used. Plug the
interface cable (9-pole) into the COM 2 on the PC and into the
interface of the receiver. To use another serial interface
change the settings, using the software.
2.3 Electric connection
Compare the voltage - and current-values stated on the type plate be-
fore connecting the power plug with the mains voltage.
Use a plug-in power supply if you use a different volatage than
230V AC, which should have an output voltage of 12V DC and a
power of 300mW.
Connect the jack plug of the plug-in power supply with the rear of the
power supply socket of the receiver and plug the other end into an out-
let.
Switch on the receiver (press the "power" switch), the green LED next to
the switch will be lit.

GTM-System page 7
2.4 Loading of the battery in the transmitter (accu
in transmitter unit)
2.4.1 voltage drop warning
In case that the voltage drops below a set value, the com-
puter software will report recharge accu/battery. After this
message appears, the transmitter unit can still measure for a
few hours. Accumulators will still have about 2/3 of the origi-
nal charge.
After the display shows "Caution! voltage of transmitter has
dropped below requirement" and after about 1000 data
transmissions the measuring and transmitter operation will
discontinue service.
2.4.2 Recharging
Recharge the accumulators before longer comminuting op-
erations.
For recharging the accumulators of the transmitter unit may
not move. Plug the battery loading cable into the transmitter
module and into one of the two sockets on the receiver.
The green display will blink three times for a short time and
will be fully lit during the charging process.
When the accumulators are fully charged the green display
will go off.
Recharging of empty accumulators takes approximately
17 hours.
After one day you should end the recharging by pulling the
plug out of the receiver.
After you switch on the internal ON / OFF switch and subsequent charg-
ing the accumulators will charge approximately for 5 hours. If this is
done several times in short successions, the danger of overloading does
exist. Capacity-loss of the accumulators is the consequence.

GTM-System page 8
2.4.3 Accumulator-lifespan
The lifespan of the accumulators decreases with overheating
of the transmitter unit.
The accumulators should preferably be fully empty before
recharging.
The transmitter accumulators can be recharged about 1000
times if properly used.
2.5 Start-up of the transmitter group
Loosen screws of transmitter unit of grinding-bowl
Plug in the switch-plug or loading cable into the socket of the
transmitter unit.
Loosen the screws of the cover plate of the transmitter unit

reports " temperature on broadcast-unit exceeded" .
Tip:
With swift energy-releases in the grinding-bowl, one reaches a limited
refrigeration of the bowl and the transmitter, which are cooled by air of
the rotating mill.

Supervise reception of the measure data on the Receiver or
the PC. Due to ball-hit-movements, the measurement can
fluctuate in limited intervals and consequently short-term
cause more intensive transmission of the measuring values.

5 Detailed information
5.1 GTM Software
The updating of the diagram during the measurement takes place
within a second after arriving of new measurements.
Measuring data is not joined at the time-axis but is represented by new
displaying of the time-axis. On some older computers, the picture con-
struction can be very slow with many measuring points. To use never-
theless multitasking put the program into the background (time for pic-
ture construction is no longer necessary)
5.2 Operating modes and configuration
The GTM-System is equipped with an automatically working measure
and transmission-management:
efficient data-reduction
automatic adaptation of the measuring speed at the signal-
course (measuring speed adaption)
Increase of the duration of operation with one accu-charge
through use of two pre-selectable stand-by modes
Pressure-measurement in two measurement ranges, that are
switched automatically
If the voltage of the accumulators sinks during operation un-
der a certain value, switches the transmitter units in the low-
voltage-mode.
Because of the time depending variable scanning the meas-
urements and the time depending variable program of data-
telegrams, in which you can intervene only in a limited man-
ner, by configuration of the transmitter unit, you get meas-
urements for different time spaces. Keep an eye on the
evaluation of the diagrams on the display as point-diagrams
and with the information of stand-by time of possibly not ob-
served times during the comminuting (please see stand-by
mode).
5.2.1 Data-reduction
The transmitter unit immediately sends measurements, if a significant
measurement-alteration is available. The alteration of the digitized
measure signals is crucial on this occasion (at least three digit in stand-
by).
Additionally, the compulsory transmission of the momentary measure-
ment takes place after x Measures (time depends also from the auto-
matic measuring speed adaption), by which slow measurement-
alterations are actually represented and also the function-proof of the
GTM systems takes place. The data-reduction is enforced automatically
and can be adjusted by the user.

GTM-System page 18
5.2.2 Stand by with configuration
Stand by, extends the operation time of the transmitter unit with one ac-
cumulator-charge. In stand-by no measurements are taken and energy
is being saved in the transmitter unit.
If a measurement-alteration takes place after stand-by, the different cri-
terions during stand-by are being adapted by the automatic measuring
speed adaptation.
5.2.3 Automatic measuring speed adaptation
The last three measured measurements are set aside in a shift register.
These three stored measurements give information about the momen-
tary signal dynamics and are used by the automatic measuring speed
adaptation to adjust the sensing rate. This automatic measuring speed
adaptation is being achieved by alteration of the stand-by time, which
occurs in limits of stand-by =0 (continuous measuring (12ms)) and the
maximum stand-by time (two modes pre-selectable: 2
5
x12ms or
2
2
x12ms).
If the comparison of present measurements leads to the re-
sult, that no measurement-alteration took place, the stand-by
time is being doubled till the set limits are achieved and these
are retained till the next values change.
If there is a dissimilarity for all three values and measurements
differ for one digit (for pressure measuring depending on
range) the stand-y time is being cut in half, each time for the
the lower limit of the stand-by time =0 (max. measuring rate of
12ms).
If the difference of the last measurement amounts is three Dig-
its (in the stand-by mode 1) or four Digits (in stand-by mode
2), the maximum measuring speed will be set.
Calibration
The started pressure-sensor-types possess an outstanding long-time-
stability. The application as measuring instrument necessitates an an-
nual calibration of the transmitter unit. If the use of the transmitter unit
takes place mainly when reaction-grinding, so a biannual calibration is
recommended. For this please send the transmitter unit to the manufac-
turer. The transmitter unit will be returned in a calibrated state.
6 Cleaning
Unscrew the lower plate (filter-cover) from the transmitter units. Cover
the filter-cover with the cleaning-cover and the gasket (O-Ring) so it fits
and tighten them with the bowl of the mill.
Cleaning-grinding reaches high effects with low to intermediate speeds.

GTM-System page 19
7 Maintenance
Before working on the appliance disconnect from mains!

The GTM system is maintenance-free, in general. Nevertheless, you
should heed some hints:
Clean the O-rings and grooves after each application with
soap-water and a rag.
Replace squashed or torn down dense-rings.
Use up the transmitter accumulators till fully empty before re-
charging.
Clean grinding-bowls, grinding balls and the filter-cover of any
residues. These impurities lead to changed testing conditions
and falsify the wanted grinding results.
Clean the screw threads of the screws and screw holes.
Use or store the GTM system only in dry environments.
The GTM-System may only be operated and repaired by
trained experts.
