All Questions carry equal marks

1. (a) How does a dierential manometer dier from a simple manometer? Explain
any one dierential manometer briey with a neat diagram.
(b) Given that , Barometer reading = 740 mm of mercury
Specic gravity of mercury = 13.6; intensity of pressure = 40kpa
Express the intensity of pressure in S.I units both gauge and absolute. [8+8]
2. (a) A rectangular rosette is bonded on to a steel plate, and the three measured
strains are:

1
= 300 m/m,
2

neat Sketch, the working of a position servo mechanism.
(b) What is the principle of feedback? Explain with the example of a home furnace
control system. [8+8]
4. (a) Explain with a sketch, the band brake type dynamometer. Derive the rela-
tionship between the torque on the shaft and the force applied for braking.
(b) Dene and distinguish between force and torque. Name the dierent types of
dynamometers. [10+6]
5. (a) Explain various types of systematic errors with examples.
(b) The guaranteed accuracy of a ow meter working on thermal principles is
4 percent of full scale reading of 10.010

/s. If the ow measured by this
meter is 510
6
m
3
/s, calculate the limiting error in percent. [8+8]
