SHORT TERM MISSIONS UPDATE
Werealmost to our fourth week of Summer Training Project and so far a lot has happened so Ill try my best to relate everything thats been going on. The theme for this summer is called The Story which is really a walkthrough of basic Christian doctrines starting with creation, and then curse, Christ, cross, re-creation and ending with a segment called commitment. Practically however you could say that thetheme for thesummer could be moreaccurately described as how to suffer as a Christian. So far oneof theguy roomleaders lost his momto a sudden resurgenceof cancer a littleover two weeks ago. Hes sincecome back and has assumed his role but now hes having to deal with the grief of losing his mom. Of the two girl roomleaders, onehas a mother whos facing a risky open heart surgery in J uly (there are many potential complications) and its been really hard for her. The other has been suffering fromfrequent near debilitating migraines, which likewise has been very difficult.
The past few weeks have definitely felt very weighty. The blessing in this has been that our group has really bonded and that its really given weight to the messageof thegospel. Imhoping and praying that it gives thestudents moreof a drive to go deeper with each other and evangelize. Not all of thestudents hereareChristians so Imlikewisepraying that through this project and the preaching of the gospel that God will shine the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ J esus in their hearts (2 Corinthians 4:6).
Therearea few other things I should say. Oneis that Meijer is overjoyed to haveus working there. They have really loved us being there and have rolled out the red carpet for us. Wevestarted forming relationships with co-workers and some of us have had opportunities to share the gospel with them. Another thing is that the training has been fantastic. Recently we've had talks on things such as the creation, work, suffering, redemption, and evangelism and everyone has really benefited from them. Finally Ill say that I'vepersonally been growing a lot as a leader here. Its not hard to seehow insufficient I amfor this role, but God has been very gracious and I'vebeen learning moreand moreto trust in His sufficiency (2 Corinthians 3:4-6) and not my own strength. Pray for us!
In Christ, Ben Van Dyke Spartan Christian Fellowship Summer Training Project, Petoskey, MI
