Title of Workshop:

Theories of Motivation

Intended Audience:
Teaching & Learning (B) class members; Spring 2014

Duration of Workshop:
4 hours; includes a 30 minute break at 14.30 and 30 minutes for debriefing and evaluation at 16.00

Goal of Workshop:
To provide the participants with a basic understanding of the theories of motivation and how these may be
applied when teaching adult learners

Learning Objectives:
At the end of the workshop the participants will be able to
(K) Accurately describe various theories of motivation and identify different motivational needs of
individual learners
(S) Adequately apply and present at least one theory of motivation
(A) Accept and appreciate different motivating factors which influence individual learners

Workshop Outline:
13.00 13.05: Introductions (MH, NT)
13.05 13.15: Icebreaker: Flags (MH, NT)

13.15 13.20: Highlight Goals and Objectives of the Workshop (MH)
13.20 13.35: Interactive exercise: Audience to share experiences: Why are you taking this course?
(MH, NT)
13.35 13.45: Definition of Motivation (NT)
Interactive exercise: Audience to provide an example of ONE motivating factor (MH)
13.45 14.05: Introduce common theories of motivation including Cognitive theories, Humanistic
theories and Achievement Motivation (NT)
14.05 14.20: Interactive Exercise: Audience to provide one example of a time in their life when
they felt motivated by an individual or event (MH)
14.20 14.30 Link audience experiences with theories of motivation discussed earlier (MH, NT)

14.30 15.00: BREAK

15.00 15.05: Quick recap on first half of workshop (NT)
15.05 15.20: Play videos of motivational speeches (MH)
Interactive exercise: audience to discuss the motivational strategies used in the
videos (NT)
15.20 15.35: Interactive exercise: Stand-up and be counted; Audience to choose one of three
theories discussed and explain the rationale behind their selection (MH)
15.35 15.50: Introduce factors which discourage motivation (MH)
Theory to Action: Explain practical application of the theories of motivation in the
classroom (NT)
15.50 16.05: Interactive exercise: Group work; Audience will be divided into three groups at
random. Each group will be given a scenario concerning an unmotivated learner.
The group must apply the theories of motivation discussed to problem solve the
scenario. (NT)
16.05 16.20: Each group has five minutes to present their conclusions to the other groups (MH)

16.20 16.25: Brief Summary (MH, NT)
16.25 16.30: Commit one minute verbal from the audience (NT)
16.30 17.00: Audience feedback and evaluation

Evaluation Tools:
(K): The group presentations in the second half of the workshop will be used as evaluation
(S): The group presentations in the second half of the workshop will be used as evaluation
(A): Interactive exercises throughout the workshop as well as the commit evaluation at the end of the
workshop will be used for evaluation

Materials Needed:
1) Laptop computer and power source
2) Projector and Screen
3) All necessary connectors for screen/projector/laptop
4) USB key with all presentations uploaded
5) Handouts for participants
6) Copies of the lesson plan for participants
7) Flip chart and markers
8) Plane paper, coloured paper, sticky notes and coloured pens for interactive exercises
9) Evaluation forms for participants
10) Snacks/Treats for participants

Plan B:
- We will bring a backup laptop and projector in case of equipment failure
- We will upload all presentations on to a USB key in case of technical issues
- In the event of an unexpected power outage, we will be prepared to conduct the workshop in an
alternative room with sufficient light and seating with the use of flip charts and handouts
- As we are only two group members, we will both be familiar with all aspects of the workshop so
that one member can successfully conduct the workshop in case the other is unable to attend.
