Natural Oil Coating-

A Sustainable System

Malaysian Timber Council

January 18th, 2011
Agenda
What means sustainability to us
Chemical background
Technical issues of applying oils
Q&A time
Safety and health issues are an issue of global concern
!
Child safety in danger
Pollution endangeres quality of living
Allergic reactions from
chemicals!
Health concerns drive customer behaviour
Bisphenol A: a dangerous substance!
Formaldehyd: indoor air quality at risk
Three major trends are driving the wood coatings market
Customer concerns about children safety,
Allergies, emissions, global worming, etc
But very dependent on customer group:
- Industry: following market demands
- Craftsmen: focus on application
- Private: awareness as driving factor
Decopaint directive (EU), Leed (US), etc.
Laws and Environment-Organization guidelines
will affect treatment of wood surfaces as well as
the import of treated wood surfaces (furniture and floors)
EU Market share for natural finishes app. 30%, growing
Project business (office, convention centres, SPAs, etc.)

Raw material selection
The raw materials should comply with highest
requirements in biocompatibility with humans
and environment during the entire use
(production, application and use of the
improved wood surface)

Raw material sources
The raw materials should come from high-
quality, renewable natural sources like bee
and plant wax as well as different regrowing
oils

Raw material quality
Only high-quality, certified and supervised raw
materials should be used for the production

Oils, basic chemistry
&
Binders

! Natural oils (Linseed-Oil, Saflor-Oil, Wood-Oil, etc.)
! Very small molecules (about 300 g/mol)
! Good penetration
! Good adhesion
! Slow drying
! Boiled oils / Stand Oil or oil combination
! Pre cross-linked oils (about 1.500 10.000 g/mol)
! Still good penetration
! Good adhesion
! Better drying (depending to Pre cross-linking)
! Enhanced oils (Combined with resins)
! Better drying
! Much harder
! Higher resistance
Drying / Dryers
! Oils are drying by integrating oxygen between the molecules
! Dryers, metal-Salts catalyzing the drying reaction

Oil vs. Lacquer: Two different technologies
'(
Oiled Surfaces = Open pored
Oils and waxes are acting as penetrating, not film-forming surface protection
! Breathable wood surface can compensate harsh climate changes
" Improved indoor climate
! Impregnation leads to increased adhesion
o Deep penetrating due to small molecular structure
" No flaking off
" Durable and elastic protection

Lacquered Surfaces = Sealed to Death
Lacquered wood is sealed with a plastic layer
! Lacquered wood is as synthetic as plastic
" No interaction between environment and wood possible
" No positive influence to the indoor climate
" Feels cold and unnatural
! No penetration in the wood (Molecular szise
" Flaking off possible
! Renovation only for the total surface possible
UV-Oil = NO Oil
OV-Oils are Lacquer with some special characteristics
! Some few % of oil
! Very thin
! Quite matt

Industrial application on floors
Advantages

- The application of qualified oils is a time-saving and material-saving technology
- Additionally the resulting surface can be sold with higher prices

Reduced Costs + Higher Sales Price = Higher Profit

Material: Consumption about 10 15 g/ sqm

Dryingtime: Can be stacked, foiled and stored directly after polishing

Design: Color of the surface can be modified

Export: Solid wood floors, the used oil has to be qualified for the internal use by the
authorities.

Industrial application on floors (scheme)
'!
Industrial Hard Oil, natural
1. Application by roller
2. Polished by rotating brush
3. Direct storage, drying during
transportation
Application at construction site
')
Preparation
- Sanding the floor to 120 160
- Cleaning by hovering and near dry wiping
Application
- By roller, brush or spatula
- Drying over night
- Spray buffing next day

Furniture production interior and exterior
Oils can be easily used also for the production of furniture

All common application techniques can be used
- Brushing
- Spraying
- Dipping

Different focus for interior and exterior furniture

For Interior furniture

- Do not cause health damages
- Resistant against sweat and saliva
- Resistant against house hold chemicals
For Exterior furniture

s. Interior furniture
+ Resistant against UV-Damage
+ Resistant against humidity
+ Resistant against rain
Maintenance, what comes after application
Easy to use maintenance products will support the surface to a
durable success

Interior

- Wooden floor soap (once a month, private; daily, public)
NEVER use a Microfiber cloth
- Maintenance oil (once a year, private;
weekly monthly, public)
Exterior

- Cleaning / refreshing with specialized - Cleaner
- Maintenance with original product (once a year, private;
depending to use, public)
