Coursedescription:
Inresponsetoeverincreasingenergydemandsandenvironmentalconcerns,theglobalautomotiveindustryisheavily
engagedindevelopingcleanvehicletechnologies.Transportationelectrificationprovidesthemostpromisingnearand
midtermsolution.Thisincludeshybridelectricvehicles,pluginhybridelectricvehicles,andpureelectricvehicles.Fuel
economyimprovementsandemissionreductionsareachievedthroughenginedownsizing,regenerativebraking,
reducedengineidle/lowspeedconsumption,andoptimizedengineoperations.Availabilityofonboardelectricenergy
storageenablescapturingofenergyduringbraking.Inaddition,fossilfuelscanbereplacedbycleanelectricityforplug
inhybridorpureelectricvehicles.
Despitethefactthathybridizationandelectrificationareclearlythefutureoftransportation,thetechnologyisstill
evolving.Asaresult,thereisanincreaseddemandforexpertiseinthisarea.TheGATECenterforElectricDrive
Transportationhasbeencreatedinresponsetothisdemand.Additionally,aseriesofshortcourseswillbedevelopedto
addressindustryneeds.
Electric,Hybrid,andPluginHybridVehicles;PrinciplesandApplicationswithPracticalPerspectivesisthefirstinaseries
ofshortcoursesthatwillcoversthekeytopicsinelectricdrivevehicles,includingfundamentalsofelectricdrivevehicles,
topologyanddynamicsofthehybridpowertrain,motorsandpowerelectronics,intelligentpowermanagement,thermal
management,batterymanagementsystems,noise,vibration,andharshness(NVH),reliability,diagnosticsand
prognostics.Examplesandcasestudiesareincludedinalltopicswithpracticalperspectives.
Cost:Thethreedaycourseisofferedataminimalcostof$99.00(tocoverfacilitiesandfoodexpenses)forparticipants
fromindustrypartnersoftheGATECenterforElectricDriveTransportation.Thepublicofferingcostfortheshortcourse
is$1395.00.ParticipantswhowishtoreceiveacertificateanduniversitytranscriptofContinuingEducationUnits(CEUs)

convertedthreeSaturnVuetwomodehybridsintopluginhybridvehicles.Inaddition,thePIhasworkedwithFordand
HondaonotherfourdifferenttypesofPHEVprogramsinwhichfourPHEVsweredevelopedintheDTElab.
Dr.YiZhangisProfessorofMechanicalEngineering.Hisresearchinterestsareintheareasofdesign,dynamicsand
controlofvehiclepowertransmissionsystems.Hehasworkedcloselywiththeautomotiveindustryontheresearchand
developmentofnewtypesofautomotivetransmissionswithsignificantfueleconomyanddrivabilityimprovementsfor
productionvehicles.Hisworkonthecontrolandcalibrationofdualclutchtransmissionshasmadeimportant
contributionstowardtheapplicationofthisnewtypeoftransmissionsinthemarketmodelsFiestaandFocus.Hiswork
hasbeensupportedbytheFordUniversityResearchProgramandtheFordInnovationAlliance.Dr.Zhangwasoneofthe
majorcontributorsinestablishingthecurriculumoftheMasterDegreePrograminAutomotiveSystemsEngineering.He
developedtheautomotivepowertraincourseseriesandteachesthesecoursesregularly
ZhiminXiisaResearchAssistantProfessorintheDepartmentofIndustrialandManufacturingSystemsEngineeringat
theUniversityofMichiganDearborn.HereceivedhisB.S.andM.S.degreeinmechanicalengineeringfromBeijing
UniversityofScienceandTechnologyandhisPh.D.fromUniversityofMarylandCollegePark.Heisthetwotime
winneroftheBestPaperAwardfromASMEInternationalDesignEngineeringTechnicalConference(IDETC)in2008and
2011,respectively.Hisresearchinterestsarerobust/reliabilitybaseddesign,modelvalidation&verification,andmulti
scalematerialsandproductdesign.
Dr.DohoyJungisAssistantprofessorofMechanicalEngineering,Hisresearchinterestsareintheareaofvehiclethermal
management systems for conventional and hybrid vehicles. He developed an analytical model of a dieselhybrid
powertrain system integrated with a thermodynamicsbased cooling system for an offroad hybrid electric vehicle
(sponsored by General Dynamics Land Systems). He also developed design guidelines of vehicle cooling system
architecture for heavy duty serieshybrid electric vehicles sponsored by the US Army TARDEC Future Combat System
Program.Inaddition,Dr.Jungconductedaninvestigationontheadvancedvehiclethermalmanagementtechnologiesto
improve the fuel economy by reducing parasitic power consumption of the vehicle thermal management system
(sponsored by HyundaiKia America Tech. Center). Prior to his academic career, Dr. Jung worked at GMKorea as a
vehiclecoolingsystemresearchengineerfor5years.
AsamemberoftheCurriculumCommitteeoftheDepartmentofMechanicalEngineering,Dr.Jungisresponsibleforthe
development of ESE course series. He has developed two courses in energy related areas, one for the undergraduate
and another one graduate curriculum. Advanced Vehicle Energy Systems is a graduate course that covers advanced
technologies and recent technical developments in automotive energy conversion systems such as hybrid electric
vehicles,pluginhybrids,fuelcellvehicles,alternativefuelsandadvancedICengines.
In addition to the project director and coPIs, the other six collaborating faculty all have expertise and experience in
researchandteachinginthethrustareasashighlightedinthefollowing.
Dr.TaehyungKimisAssistantprofessorofElectricalandComputerEngineering.Hisexpertiseincludeenergyconversion,
pluginandfuelcellhybridelectricvehicles,powerelectronicsandACmotordrives,electricandhybridelectricvehicle's
traction motor drives, digital signal processor (DSP) based control for adjustable speed motor drives, evaluation &
diagnosis of AC motors for military and commercial applications, and position sensorless control of AC motors. His
research has been supported by NSF and automotive companies. He has recently received $200k funding from NSF
MajorResearchInstrumentation(MRI)toestablishbatterytestingfacilityaspartoftheHybridPowertrainLab.
Dr. John Cherng is Professor of Mechanical Engineering. He has more than twenty years of research experience in
vibrationandacousticsrelatedareas.Heiscurrentlyteachingbothundergraduateandgraduatevibrationandacoustics
courses and is in charge of the Acoustics and Vibrations Laboratory at UMDearborn. He has published more than 55
technicalpapers,twotextbooksandthreechaptersofotherbooks.Hehasbeenprojectdirectororprincipalinvestigator
formorethan33researchgrantsandcontracts.Mostofthemarevehiclenoiseandvibrationrelatedsubjects.
Dr.BenQ.LiisProfessorandChairoftheDepartmentofMechanicalEngineering.Hisresearchinterest centersonthe
study of electromagnetics, fluid flow, and heat transfer in thermalfluid systems. He received his Ph.D. from the
University of California at Berkley in 1989. He subsequently worked at Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a
researchassociateforaboutayear,andatAluminumCompanyofAmerica(Alcoa)asaseniorengineerforthreeyears
beforejoiningacademia.Hehasauthoredonebookandeditedtwobooks.Hehaspublishedover200technicalpapers
in archive journals and conference proceedings. His research work has been supported by various federal (NSF, NASA,
DOE,DOD,NIST)andstateagenciesaswellasprivateindustries.HeisaFellowofASME.
Dr. Yi Lu Murphey is Professor and Chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Her research
interestsincludemachinelearning,computervisionandintelligentsystemswithapplicationstoengineeringdiagnostics,
vehiclepowermanagementandroboticvisionsystems.Mostrecentlyshehasreceivednumerousresearchgrantsfrom
theStateofMichigan,FordMotorCompany,andUSArmyTACOMtosupportherresearchinintelligentvehiclepower
management. She has published over 100 technical papers and contributed a chapter of intelligent vehicle power
managementforthebooktitledComputationalIntelligence.
Mr.TedBohnisPrincipalElectricalEngineerattheArgonneNationalLaboratory.HereceivedhisMSdegreeinElectrical
Engineering from the University of WisconsinMadison. He has 22 years of experience in electrical engineering in
industrial and research environments with emphasis on power electronics, electric machines, and control systems. He
received the 2002 Grainger Outstanding Power Electronics Engineer Award. He has worked for 11 years in the area of
hybridelectricvehiclerelateddesignprojectsandorganizingstudentvehicledesigncompetitions.
