Dust Removal Efficiency using Wet Scrubber System
2.0 OBJECTIVE
To determine the scrubber dust removal efficiency, under constant dust loading with
various water flow rate.
3.0 INTRODUCTION
Wet scrubber is defined as industrial equipment that uses gasliquid separation to remove
dust from a gas stream before discharge to the atmosphere. !n these systems, the
scrubbing liquid "usually water# comes into contact with a gas stream containing dust
particles. The greater the contact of the gas and liquid streams, the higher the Dust
Removal Efficiency "DRE#.
There are a large variety of wet scrubbers$ however, all have one of three basic
operations%
a. &umidification "of air#% This process increases si'e of fine dust particles and ma(es
collection easier
b. )ontact of liquid and dust filled air% This is the (ey operation that governs collection
efficiency of the scrubber. Water droplets in the path of the air stream collect dust
particles while the air stream flows around it
c. Separation of dirty liquid and clean air% During this operation, the dust*water mi+ture
accumulates, and as they grow larger, they collect into the water hopper. &igh
collection efficiencies can be achieved in scrubbers by maintaining velocities of air
that are high enough to drive dust through the surface tension of water droplets. ,
good design scrubber produced a secondary generation of water droplets and induced
a mist collection section. -igure . shows a typical wet scrubber for dust removal.
