2. Read the passage and complete the sentences given below.
But we do not judge a cricketer so much by the runs he gets as by the way he gets
them. In literature as in finance, says Washington Irving, Much paper and much
poverty may co - exist. And in cricket, too, many runs and much dullness may be
associated. If cricket is menaced with creeping paralysis, it is because it is losing the
spirit of joyous adventure and becoming a mere instrument for compiling tables of
averages. There are dull, mechanical fellows who turn out runs with as little emotion
as machine turns out pins. There is no colour, no enthusiasm, no character in their
play. Cricket is not an adventure to them, it is a business. It was also with Shrewsbury.
His technical perfection was astonishing: but the soul of the game was wanting in him.
There was no sunshine in his play, no spirit, surprise or splendid unselfishness. And
without these things, without gaiety, daring and the spirit of sacrifice cricket is a dead
thing. Now, the Jam Sahib has the root of the matter in him. His play is as sunny as his
face. He is not a miser hoarding up runs, but a millionaire spending them, with a
splendid yet judicious prodigality. It is as though his pockets are bursting with runs
that he wants to shower with his blessing upon the expectant multitude. It is not difficult
to believe that in his little kingdom of Nawanagar where he has the power of life and
death in his hands, he is extremely popular, for it is obvious that his pleasure is in
giving pleasure.
(1) The joy of cricket does not lie in __________ but how __________. __________
(2) The author feels that Shrewsbury __________.
(3) Jam Sahib on the other hand __________.

3. Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow by choosing
the answers from the given options.
The proposal for a single entrance test with common science and maths content at
class XI and XII for school students is a much needed welcome step. This proposal is
the outcome of Kapil Sibals innovative thinking and, the will to reform our countrys
educational pyramid. I do feel that Kapil Sibal has taken the first positive step. If this
proposal is pursued with perseverance and carved out with meticulousness, lakhs of
students studying in class XI and XII will be saved from the arduous task of preparing
for different boards entrance examinations.
Uniformity in course content will remove the so - called superiority or inferiority of the
board from the students mind. Kapil Sibal feels for the school students; hence, he has
placed all the students of the country on one platform where they will learn one uniform
syllabus and, will appear in one single entrance examination.
This would help remove regional imbalances in the course content which students had
to study before sitting for entrance tests for professional colleges. Now, it would not
matter whether a student passes out from ICSE, CBSE or any other State Board of
School Examination. They will think on par with each other as far as preparedness for
the exam is concerned. Now the Council of Boards of School Education in India (COBSE)
and CBSE in New Delhi, which spearheaded this change after putting in a lot of
strenuous hard work, must move on and implement it. It is never easy to implement
any policy or proposal of such a magnitude. However, by accommodating every State
Boards interest and achieving consensus, by and large, uniform course contents for
national level single entrance examination must be implemented in the larger interest
of the students, as planned w.e.f the year 2013.
(1) The first step that Kapil Sibal has taken is that __________ .
(a) he has suggested different syllabuses for different Boards.
(b) he has suggested a single entrance test with common science and maths
syllabus.
(c) He has suggested uniform syllabus for all subjects.
(d) He has recommended simplification of syllabus.
(2) Innovative means __________.
(a) inventive
(b) novel or new
(c) that which generates new ideas.
(d) bringing in new changes.
(3) Uniformity in course content will remove __________.
(a) superiority of certain boards
(b) inferiority of certain boards
(c) superiority or inferiority of boards
(d) none of the above.
(4) Strenuous and arduous have __________.
(a) the same meaning
(b) opposite meaning
(c) no relation with each other
(d) been wrongly used in the passage.
(5) The idea of a single entrance examination is bound to __________.
(a) take a lot of burden off the students.
(b) bring about greater competition
(c) provide equal opportunities to all
(d) create a lot of discussion / dispute.

4. Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow by choosing
the answers from the given options:-
JAPANESE ELECTRONIC INDUSTRY
The strength of the electronic industry in Japan is the Japanese ability to organize
production and marketing rather than their achievements in original research. The
British are generally recognized as a far more inventive collection of individuals, but
never seem able to exploit what they invent. There are many examples, from the TSR
Z hovercraft, high speed train and Sinclair scooter to the Triumph, BSA and Norton
motorcycles which all prove this sad rule.
The Japanese were able to exploit their strength in marketing and development many
years ago, and their success was at first either not understood in the West or was
dismissed as something which could have been produced only at their low price.
They were sold because they were cheap copies of other peoples ideas churned out
in a workhouse which was dedicated to hard grind above all else.
(1) According to the author, prosperity in industry depends upon __________.

_________ .
(a) Japanese failure
(b) Japanese success
(c) British research
(d) British success.
(4) The sad rule refers to _________.
(a) the lack of variety in Japanese inventions
(b) the inability of the Japanese to be inventive like the British
(c) the inability of the British to be industrious like the Japanese.
