Whats in a Name?
Sustainable, Organic & Biodynamic Defined
Its a question which bedevils even longtime wine and wine
trade insiders: what really is the difference between the terms
sustainable, organic and biodynamic? And do the distinctions
matter at all? Whats really being asked, in my opinion, is how
much is marketing magic and how much is winegrowing truth,
how much is it everyone drinking from the same grapeaid, and
how much is it a reflection of the realities of commercial wine
production? Its a mixture of all of the above, of course!
Everyone, perhaps, by now understands what organic means in
terms of not using chemicals or ecologically disruptive practices,
but in the context of wine, it gets a lot trickier, especially for small
wineries, which is why there are way more wines labeled Made
with Organic Grapes than straight up organic wines. It is
considerably easier to get certification showing that the organicness of the grapes, derived through the grower, is preserved
through the winemaking than to get a winery or wine certified as
wholly organic. It is not impossible, but it is costly and leaves little
room for error in the cellar. Among a number of technical issues,
there is an absolute limit on sulfite usage, which knocks out most
commercial wines because of the larger batch process in which they
are produced and the necessity to have preservation of the wines in
the cellar, once bottled, and while on store shelves and wine racks.
Going this one better, biodynamic, as Nigel Tufnel would have
said, puts organic on eleven. Based on the writings of Rudolf
Steiner, proponents of this agricultural philosophy argue for
integrative methods akin to organic practices but also root those
strategies within a system of nature-based energy wherein the goal
is to recharge the land ecologically and spiritually; and there is a
certification agency, Demeter, whose imprenteur producers must
Josh Stein has been in the Napa wine business for more than a decade, and, in
addition to being owner/winemaker of the Stein Family Wine Group, which
produces a nationally and internationally distributed portfolio of wine brands and
donates a percentage of its sales to the children of wineworkers in the form of
college scholarships and support funds, he regularly consults for wineries and
organizations throughout the North Bay and Coast via their subsidiaries, Discrete
Wine Support Services and SF-Integrated Vineyard Management Services.

Two of Sonoma Countys top female winemakers have joined together to create a new
cooperative tasting room on the Windsor Town Green. Phyllis Zouzounis of Deux Amis
Winery and Brenda Lynch of Mutt Lynch Winery opened Tasting Room on the Green at
9050 Windsor Road in Windsor. The new venture showcases the traditional, hand-crafted
wines that have been the hallmark of both winemakers.
Phyllis and Brenda have been making wine side by side for more than 15 years in
Sonoma County. Over the years, the two winemakers have developed a close friendship
and working relationship in the production of their artisanal, limited-production wines.
Tasting Room on the Green is simply the next chapter in their long relationship.
Tasting Room on the Green is open five days a week (Thursday-Monday) for byreservation and drop-in wine tasting, is dog friendly and offers an intimate atmosphere
that aims to welcome wine enthusiasts seeking out limited-production, artisanal wines.
With advance reservations, Tasting Room on the Green offers seated tasting programs at its
Harvest Table for small tour groups or private parties.
For Phyllis Zouzounis, owner and winemaker of Deux Amis, the Tasting Room on the
Green name says it all, We really want people to know that theres a new option when
exploring Sonoma County. The Village Town Green offers a lot of great shopping, food
and wine tasting. We couldnt be more excited to be here.
Deux Amis is French for two friends. The winery was established in 1987 by
longtime winemaking partners Phyllis Zouzounis and Jim Penpraze. Deux Amis
specializes in producing outstanding Zinfandels from Sonoma County in addition to

Its a blast! You will not want to miss the free Summer Music Series at Sebastiani and dance to the
jazzy dance music of Z and the Benders, classic R&B from The Rolling Blackouts or 80s rock hits from
Rock on Broadway and more. Its time to dust off your dancing shoes and enjoy great rock, jazz and
blues music. You can purchase food and wine at the event and reservations are not required. The locals
show up regularly for these events.
Food Truck Fridays are back at Sebastiani on the last Friday of the month. This popular feature
coincides with the Summer Music Series at Sebastiani. With so many choices available, you can
purchase gourmet food served from six of the Bay Areas best food trucks in the Sebastiani parking lot.
It adds so much to the musical evening and Sebastiani wine is available for purchase.
Sebastiani is featuring the newly released 2013 Sonoma County Sauvignon Blanc. Mark Lyon, the
Winemaker stated, 2013 was a fantastic vintage! Overall, the weather was more moderate, which
resulted in even ripening of the grapes and prime flavor development. We harvested the grapes from
August 23 to September 18, 2013 at optimum ripeness under clear night skies to ensure cold fruit at
the time of pressing. This is very much a fresh style and fruit-forward Sauvignon Blanc. Pair this with a
fresh garden salad or your favorite buttery cheese.
The Sebastiani Hospitality Center draws visitors from all over the world. The knowledgeable tasting
room staff is always available to pour their local Sonoma County wines, as well as share special
appellation series wines and answer any questions.
In 2001, they remodeled the winery and production facility to focus on artisan winemaking and
highlight the history. The new Hospitality Center displays an eighty-foot long Italian marble tasting bar,
vaulted ceilings with gorgeous arches, a grand fireplace and luxurious new table sets where guests can
sit and enjoy their wines.
After tasting, purchase a bottle or enjoy a glass of your favorite wine paired with gourmet food
items. Sit inside the tasting room or outside in the beautiful picnic garden near the fountain piazza.
Arbor Park is a lush garden park on the property with picnic tables facing the historic Cherryblock
Vineyard planted with ancient Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. This is the perfect space for a memorable
wedding or family event. Afterward, take a stroll through the vineyard where you can still see the
original Sebastiani family home across the street near the vineyards.
Since its founding in 1904, Sebastiani has been one of Sonoma Countys most important wine
www.WineCountrythisWeek.com
z
producers. Located a few blocks from downtown Sonoma, Sebastiani
is a popular destination thanks to its historic winery building,
hospitality center, barrel room with antique redwood tanks, grand
event space and daily tours and tastings.
Today, under the ownership of Bill Foley, the winery is making the
finest wines in its long history. In addition to its value-oriented
Sonoma County tier, Sebastiani has earned high scores and
widespread praise for its limited bottling of individual sites
(Cherryblock, Patricks Vineyard and Roberts Vineyard) and subappellations (Sonoma Valley, Alexander Valley, Carneros, Dry Creek
and Russian River Valley).
Mark Lyon is the award-winning Winemaker at Sebastiani. Mark
has been with the winery since 1979 and accredited with the creation
of Sebastianis Cherryblock Cabernet Sauvignon. Since its creation,
Cherryblock has been our flagship wine at Sebastiani, he said. The
majority of the fruit (75%) came from our original Old Vines block of
Cabernet Sauvignon planted in 1961. The wine also features a
portion of fruit from younger vines on our estate. Small amounts of
Malbec and Merlot were sourced from nearby sites with similar
climates and soils. Our goal is to create a benchmark Cabernet that
possesses the elegance, structure and terroir-driven aromatics only
found in Cherryblock, he added.
The original proprietor, Samuele Sebastiani and his family are
responsible for many of the winemaking techniques practiced today.
In 2008, Bill Foley of Foley Family Wines purchased the winery from
the Sebastiani family. He continues to maintain the rich tradition
established over one hundred years ago. After the acquisition, Bill
acquired new winemaking equipment; implemented sustainable
farming practices; sought out new and exciting vineyards sites; and
started focusing on special, single-vineyard and appellation series
wines. Bill began Foley Family Wines in 1996 and the company has
since grown to include over a dozen world-class properties from
around the globe.
Join the Sebastiani Wine Club and enjoy the many benefits of
membership including the June Italian Festival Wine Club Pick Up
Party. The event includes a delicious Italian food menu with classic
Italian music paired with great Sebastiani wines. Visit the Sebastiani
Hospitality Center today and have an entertaining wine tour and
tasting!

launched his solo career that has featured gold certified albums and the hit single Wait For you.
Vocalist, pianist and modern torch singer Spencer Day was raised in the small town of Pinetop, Arizona by his mother,
an accomplished music teacher and soprano vocalist. Her talent and love of music encouraged him to become the singer
and musician that he is today, finding inspiration from the works of Cole Porter, Roy Orbison, Joni Mitchell and many
others. It has been an exciting few years for Day, having performed at the San Francisco Jazz Festival, Hollywood Bowl
and at various international events. Spencer spent the winter of 2014 in the studio working on his fifth albumDaybreak,
set for release on May 6, 2014. The album is filled with a selection of classic tunes from the 60s, in addition to five original songs that pay homage to the era. The whole album is really a reflection of where I stand at this moment; more
happy than Ive ever been in my adult life.

Daryl Groom led the exclusive event for its second year. Judges
were very, very impressed with the extremely high quality of the
wines. 167 gold medals were given, representing 19% of the wines
entered. I dont believe any other competition in the USA can boast
this quality level. Its a testament to our talented North Coast
winemakers and a reflection of the world-class grape growing
conditions we are blessed with. Grooms expertise includes serving
as wine judge in more than 150 wine shows across the United States,
and he has made many award-winning wines in Californias North
Coast and his native Australia. He was named Winemaker of the Year
by eight publications, including the San Francisco Chronicle and Los
Angeles Times.
The Press Democrat will host an invitational tasting on June 15 at
the Culinary Institute of America at Greystone in St. Helena, which
will feature a selection of medal-winning wines from the North Coast
Wine Challenge. This competition is about quality. No matter if a
wine sells for under $20 per bottle or over $75, the winners are all
superior and will be available to taste at our event, said Steve Falk,
CEO of Sonoma Media Investments, owners of The Press Democrat.
For more details about the tasting, visit NorthCoastWineEvent.com
for full details.
Award winners are posted at NorthCoastWineChallenge.com,

CHAteAu Ador
By DAWN MARIE CARLSON
Visit Chateau Ador in Santa Rosa, a premiumproducing vineyard where grape varietals surround the
winery along the Fountain Grove hills. Sample awardwinning wines in their new tasting room opened last year
where you can enjoy your favorite wine and picnic lunch
on the grapevine-trellised patio and watch the grapes
evolve.
JW Vineyards is family-run operation of wine farming
and wine production located at the northern end of the
Russian River Valley in Sonoma County since 1995. James
Wong and his family originally began selling their high
quality grapes to famous winemaking companies in the
Sonoma County region. Over the past several years, they
began creating their own wine brands from their vineyard
to produce truly unique wines.
The Wong family provides a pleasant atmosphere in
their tasting room with an Asian influence through the art
and dcor. Linger at the granite bar and you will learn from
their friendly staff about their wine varietals to help narrow
the field and find your favorite wine to bring home with
you.
The JJ Custom Wines brands produced are Chateau
Ador, L
Amanda Hills and Alyssa Cellars. The Chateau
Ador Chardonnay, Alyssa Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon and
Pinot Noir are produced from their own vineyard in
Sonoma County. Chateau Ador has a Vintage Red blend
and Vintage White blend of select wine varietals produced
from high quality grapes at a value based price. The
L
Amanda Hills brand is a value-priced wine offering
Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Pinot Noir
and Merlot from California grapes. Custom private label
wine services are available upon request.
Award-winning Wines
The Alyssa Cellars brand of wines were given the San
Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition Silver Award for the
2009 Merlot, the Pinot Noir, and the 2010 Chardonnay. At
the 2013 Finger Lakes New York Wine Competition, the
2009 Alyssa Cellars Merlot received the Double Gold
Medal, the 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon, received the Gold
Medal, and the 2010 Chardonnay received the Silver
Medal. Purchase these award-winning wines for your
summer celebrations.

If youre looking to spend the day on a lush green piece of heaven, then Schug Winery is the
place for you. The Schug Carneros Estate is just 10 minutes from the town of Sonoma, off
Bonneau drive and takes you up a beautiful winding road through vineyards and bordering rose
gardens. At the top, you will spot their quaint German-Style winery tucked into a hillside
containing underground barrel caves. Behind the European building, there is a 360 degree vista
of the surrounding vineyards and breathtaking hills, a view to die for!
Starting in June, you can enjoy Schugs Pinot Noir Best of Class wines while listening to music
in the courtyard! Local artists will play every Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. through September,
where you can relax, taste Schug wines in the courtyard while listening to acoustic duos, such as
Larry Otis, (June 14th and 28th), with an eclectic sound on multiple stringed instruments, KellyJekel, (July 28th), performing folk music with vocals and instrumentals, and many more.
As you enjoy the good music in the warm Sonoma sun, you will sip four delicious varietal
wines, including Schugs prestigious award-winning, 2011 Pinot Noir Carneros, which offers a
wide range of flavors and aromas in the tradition of the finest red Burgandies of France. This
wine pairs nicely with lamb, duck, even grilled fish and will improve with additional cellaring for
two to five years. They will also pour their Schugs 2013 Sauvignon Blanc, newly released, crisp
summer wine, and much more. Schug produces small lot productions, so as they say, Get em
while you can!
To have a full appreciation of these hand-crafted wines, you have to understand the founder
and owner of Schug Carneros Estate Winery. Founded in 1980, Schug Carneros Estate Winery
was and is the life-long dream of Walter Schug, one of Californias most celebrated winemakers.
Walter built his reputation on talent and experience, as founding winemaker for Joseph Phelps
Vineyards in the 1970s where he made Californias first proprietary Bordeaux-Style blend,
Insignia and legendary vineyard designated Cabernets (Backus and Eisele Vineyards).
Over the years, he gained experience from the production of fine wines in both Europe and
California, where he combined old world tradition with modern winemaking techniques. In
1995, with the help of Sonoma-born winemaker Michael Cox, (who is still in charge today), they
WINERY
used the finest grapes from the cool, marine climate of the Carneros
Apellation.
Here, he focused on the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay varietals that
were his greatest passions. These wines have received accolades
worldwide as true contemporary classics and are offered at the
winery.
Come and taste Schugs finest creations in their relaxed and
friendly tasting room, open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Private
tours and tastings and groups of 6 or more people are available by
appointment.
The Schug Carneros Estate Winery should be high on everyones
bucket list. This open, hidden gem is truly a slice of heaven, a must
see spot when visiting the wine country!

the barrel and one in the bottle before the world is permitted to taste
them. Even then, no one can sip until all of the winemakers in the
Consortium have blind-tasted every wine and determined that the
wine is worthy of the Coro label.
2014 marks the 11th vintage of the Coro Mendocino label,
established in 2000 by a collection of liked-minded Mendocino
County winemakers. The reviews for previous years have been
effusive, calling the wines smooth, lush, intense; sophisticated, fun;
fat, rich, long and stylish with hints of fruit such as blackberry and
ripe plum.
Of course, no two Coro wines are ever exactly alike. Oenophiles
will have the opportunity to be the first to taste the 2011 vintage at
the official Coro Release Party, to be held at the historic Little River
Inn property located on the Mendocino Coast. Each vintner will pour
a sampling of their white and sparkling wines during the cocktail
hour, then attendees will feast on a gourmet dinner, prepared by
Executive Chef Marc Dym of Little River Inn. Each course will be
paired with one or more of the 2011 Coro wines. Afterwards,
attendees will receive a complete collection of 2011 Coro wines to
take home and enjoy.

TEDESCHI FAMILY
WINERY
2779 Grant St, Calistoga, CA 94515
(707) 501-0668 | www.tedeschifamilywinery.com
ABout: Mario Tedeschi grew up on the family farm in Calistoga, where his grandparents settled in 1919 as Italian immigrants. A third-generation winemaker, Marios
passion for wine began in the vineyards, while working alongside his father in vineyard management. Mario helped build his familys winery from the ground up,
and soon began overseeing production with his brother. Making wines our grandparents would be proud of is what we are aiming for; traditionally made oldworld wines. Today, Mario continues to be heavily involved in farming his familys vineyards with his father, and making the approachable, fruit-driven wines
that the Tedeschi Family is known for. Their flagship wine is the Tedeschi Estate Cabernet Sauvignon.
WCtW: Whats your favorite local restaurant and what do you like to order?
rM: Its a toss-up between Ume Japanese Bistro where I would order the Hamachi Collar and the
Old Redwood Roll or the Russian River Pub I can go in there during harvest covered in
grape juice and relax with a beer and a burger.
WCtW: Where do you go for coffee and a pastry?
rM: Wherever the wife takes me shes the one drinking the coffee. Probably the Flying Goat,
Parish Caf or Chloes French Caf.
WCtW: If you are meeting a friend for cocktails, where do you go?
rM: Healdsburg has some nice bars with great cocktails Willis Wine Bar, Mateos Cucina Latina
for margaritas or SpoonBar.
WCtW: What do you do for fun?
rM: Boating on the lake, fishing, hiking and mushroom hunting.
WCtW: Wheres the best place to relax in Wine Country?
rM: I like to relax at the coast sipping Sauvignon Blanc and slurping oysters after a walk along the
shore or on a picnic after a hike with a cold bottle of ros.
WCtW: Whats an interesting fact that most people dont know about you?
rM: I taught math for 26 years.

(707) 433-5499 | www.moshinvineyards.com
ABout: Rick Moshins fascination with fermentation began with homemade beer, but he soon turned his attention to wine. A former San Jose State
University math instructor, Rick made prudent use of his math skills to design a four-tier gravity flow winery for small-lot wine production at
Moshin Vineyards. Acquiring a vineyard was a dream that became a reality for him in 1989 when he and his family decided to purchase a 10-acre
Pinot Noir vineyard in Sonoma County. His goal for producing the highest quality wines inspired him to grow this endeavor into a full-fledged
winery.
