read the manual, here is a asic overview of the game.

The Pit is a .ogueli#e game, which refers to a genre that

aout the Gourney rather than the destination. >hich is good,
ecause The Pit will do its est to #eep you from your
destination. $tBs aout how far you can ma#e it efore your
strategy and luc# run out.

The Pit has an end, ut ma#e no mista#e H The Pit is out to
get you. !o ta#e heart should you fall. You havenBt failed H
rather you made a spectacular attemptE 6ver time, youBll
egin to learn secrets in the game that H comined with a it
of luc# H can help you reach 5evel (9: -23 <6--6M 6F THE
PITE Prior to that, youBll have a lot of fun get into and out of
troule, all the while using all manner of craIy alien tools and
weapons.

The Pit is a turnCased .P1, which means that whichever of
the three character types you can choose to play will have a
different set of !tats and !#ills (p.16) compared to the other
two. -hese !tats and !#ills dictate how well you are ale to
carry out a wide variety of actions in the game, from fighting
a monster to repairing eJuipment and so on.

-hese actions ta#e time, which is measured in Moments
(p.15). As Moments pass in the game you will get hungrier,
so moving through and e'ploring The Pit is all aout finding
food to stave off hunger as well as $tems to help stave off the
creatures that will attempt to #ill you. You can watch your
2ealth and 2unger in the ottom left of the screen (p.25).

You move through the world using the >A!7 #eys (p.11) C
as you move, you will notice a shadow filling your surrounding

?

and even ehind you. -his represents the 5ine of !ight, what
you can and can"t see (p.22).

-hroughout the levels of The Pit are a variety of eJuipment,
storage loc#ers, and other miscellanea. <y wal#ing up to
them, or mouseCover them, you will automatically see what
they are, and depending on what they are, you can interact
with them y standing ne't to them and pressing the !PA+3
ar (p.32). >hat the interaction is can e as simple as rifling
a pile of garage to prying open a damaged loc#er, or as
comple' as opening up a +rafting -ale or pic#ing the loc# on
a door.

As you e'plore and search the levels, you will find $tems.
5ots of $tems. And $tems do lots of different things that we
won"t cover here in a Juic# start. You can even comine items
to craft them into a new item (p.42)E .ecipes for comining
items are found in encrypted messages on computer terminals
H you wonBt find them all in a single game, ut donBt worry,
they are stored in your profile and shared across different
characters in different playthroughs of the game, so you will
uncover them in time. And if you thin# you #now a recipe,
give it a try H if it wor#s, itBll e permanently stored for future
games. $f you ever want to #now what an item does, you can
read up on it in the !ot!7e'E

3ach character starts with some asic supplies C weapons,
food, perhaps a loc# pic# set or tool#it. You will see what each
character egins with when you ma#e your choice at the start
of the game, ut when you are in the game, you can chec#
your $nventory at any time y P.3!!$01 $ (p.35). From the
$nventory, you can move $tems around to ma#e room for
even more $tems y dragging and dropping them or you can
use them y .$12- +5$+,$01 on them. You can also find
more aout an item y selecting it using the A..6> #eys or
the M6*!3 P6$0-3..

!hould you find yourself in a fight Kand who are we #idding
C you are going to get into a lot of fightsL P.3!! F to attac#
the nearest target your weapon can reach. $f you want to
attac# a specific target, use the arrow #eys to move a

your action turns, don"t worryL, then P.3!! F (p.3) or clic#
the enemy with your mouse. $f you"re using a gun and it runs
out of ammo, P.3!! . to reload. And if you don"t have any
ammo to reload with, P.3!! -A< to cycle through your other
weapons.

+ompleting actions successfully gains you e'perience and
eventually that e'perience will add up until you have enough
to level. Your e'perience is displayed in a yellow ar at the
ottom of the screen. >hen you"re ready to level, P.3!! +,
and you will see all your !tats and !#ills, how much it will
ta#e to improve them, and how many points you have
availale to spend on those improvements (p.1). >hen you
level, you"re health will return to full C your hunger however
will stay the same.

As you e'plore, P.3!! M to ring up a map of the level you
are on. You will see a mar#er for where you entered. >hen
you find the e'it to the ne't level, it will also get a mar#er, in
case you want to #eep e'ploring the level a it more. >hen
you"re ready to leave to the ne't level, stand on the e'it hatch
and P.3!! !PA+3.

!ince the game is turnCased, you can easily wal# away
from the computer for a sandwich and not have to worry
aout anything attac#ing you. 2ec#, you can wal# away in the
middle of a fight if you want. .is#y, if you come ac# and
can"t rememer what your strategy for the fight was, ut #ind
of a thrill. $f you have to turn off the game or the computer,
P.3!! 3!+ to e'it to the main menu and then e'it the game.
-he ne't time you come ac# to the game, you can load up
your last game and continue (p.!).

STARTI"# T$% #AM%
$t"s e'tremely easy to get into troule in The Pit. 6ne might
thin# we"ve done this on purpose, that we ta#e some evil Goy
in helping you face off against A9 levels of horrors and
starvation. 6ne would e right.

>hen you start the game, the Main Menu gives you two
options C !tart or 3'it. 3'it is for cowards or a rave few who
have een playing the game, ut need to shut it down and go
have dinner.

!electing !tart presents you with the option to start a new
game, load up your last game again, play the tutorial, read
your !ot!7e' Kwhich retains info on all the items, monsters,
and recipes you collect while playingL, set your game 6ptions,
chec# your high scores, or return ac# to the main menu you
Gust came from. +oward.

"e& #a'e H >hen you start a new game, you will first e
as#ed to select a level of difficultyM 3asy, 0ormal, 2ard,
$nsane, and !eriouslyN, each one harder than the last one. $n
addition to that you can choose $nfinite Mode Kprovided youBve
unloc#ed it y completing all A9 levels of the gameL which Gust
continues on without end, getting harder and harder until your
inevitale demise. You can also select )uic# Mode Kwhich
reduces the numer of rooms per floor, and you get a 19O
oost in ;P as you playL or Fast Mode Kwhich s#ips every
second floor, and you get a /9O oost in ;P as you play.L

6nce youBve choosen a difficulty, you can then select which
+haracter +lass you wish to play. 3ach class starts with
different s#ill stats and eJuipment, meaning each plays very
different from the rest, so if youBre good with one character,
e prepared to have to change your play style when you try
another.

(oa) #a'e H You can save one game per +haracter +lass,
meaning you can have more than one game on the go if you
li#e. $f you save a game with one +lass and then try and start
a new game with the same +lass, the game will warn you, so
you donBt lose your old saved game.

*IT TI*+ $f you are playing -he Pit on !team, you can
set the game to use !team +loud in 6ptions, which
allows you to play the same saved game on different

Tuto,-al C -he tutorial is an e'cellent introduction to
playing the game, going somewhat eyond the )uic# Play you
Gust read, ut still not as detailed as this full manual. $t is
worth it to play through it at least once. You will get to ma#e
things and shoot things and low a few things up, so it"s not

a full, new game.

After setting the difficulty level, you will get to choose one
of three !olForce character classes C Marine, 3ngineer, and
!cout. 3ach has their own specific set of stats and special
eJuipment loadCouts.

Ma,-ne C -ravis 2udson was honoraly discharged after the
!econd <attle of MGolnir. 2e chose to retire on the rough
frontier world of Aruda $=. >hile uilding his cain in the
Feldspar Mountains, he met and fell in love with -ami#o
2oshinara, a eautiful young scientist. As a former Marine,
2udson has high Might and average Finesse, ut he might e
a few marles short in the <rains department. 2is comat
s#ills are still sharp.

>hile not great at scavenging for $tems or pic#ing loc#s or
opening damaged storage loc#ers compared to the others,
-ravis 2udson is tough and comes prepared for a fight. 2is
#ey starting s#ills are all weaponsCased. 2is Psionic potential
is very low and he is a slow learner in general.

%n1-nee, H -ema Male is a 1round Forces 3ngineer,
assigned to help uild colonial infrastructure on Aruda $=.
2e is very good with technology, and e'cels at crafting,
computers and electronics. 2e has high <rains and good
Finesse ut low Might, which will limit how much eJuipment
and loot he can carry.

12

0ot nearly as tough as the Marine or !cout, -hema Male
is more adept at crac#ing open things that are loc#ed, from
computer terminals to food freeIers, particularly as he starts
with a loc#Cpic# set H there is little he canBt get into in -he Pit.
2e"s not ad in a fight, ut pic# your attles carefully. 2is #ey
starting s#ills are all geared towards conJuering the various
systems found in The Pit. >hile he has low Psionic potential,
his is very fast at improving his s#ills.

S3out H -oshi#o 2oshinara is a pilot in the !ol Force !cout
+orps. 2er twin sister -ami#o disappeared while doing
classified research on Aruda $=. As a trained !cout, -oshi#o
is fast and has high Finesse, good <rains and average Might.
!he has light comat s#ills and some asic training in
-echnology and Medical s#ills. 2er #ey s#ills allow her to
etter fight when guns and ammo are asent, ut she is most
dangerous with ranged weapons. !he is a superlative forager
and while physically nearly as good as sheBs going to get, she
is e'tremely efficient at improving her other attriutes.

*s-on H Psions are men and women who are specially
trained to use the powers of the mind. -hey are chosen for
Power, $ntelligence and sensitivity. 5ui 5ing is a military
psion, assigned y !ol Force to trac# down and recover the

and spy for the -ar#asian military caste. +hosen for speed,
intelligence and adaptaility, .angers are freJuently dropped
onto worlds, either solo or in small teams, to survey or gather
intelligence on alien colonies and military installations. !ol
Force"s file on >ara Pang contains little information eyond

>ara is ale to use her tail as a weapon, should things get
desperate. !he has low Psionic potential, ut is a very Juic#

veteran who was adopted y human colonists on Aruda $=
after his maternal clan was destroyed. 2e is searching for a
cure to the ;omie Plague which has afflicted his human
friends and neighors. 3'tremely tough, ut doesnBt adapt
well.

See5e, H A !ee#er is a reconnaissance agent for the <lac#
!wimmers, the military of the 5iir race. Ay was sent to
Aruda to investigate rumors of the <loodweaver, one of
seven war criminals still at large and actively hunted y the
