MY EXPERIENCE:
RHONA MccALLUM
MA Jewellery and Silversmithing
The Universitys Careers Service helped jewellery
designer Rhona, from Scotland, UK, win a place
on the shortlist for the Deutsche Bank Award
for Creative Enterprises.
I know that I want to have my own
jewellery business, but I think that
professional experience is also very
important, so its a long-term plan.
Im still doing exhibitions and selling
work alongside the masters. The College
[Edinburgh College of Art] really encourages
people to enter competitions and
exhibitions as part of the professional
practice side of the programme, which
is basically about running your work as
though youre already running a business.
Ive been quite worried about what Im
going to do after graduating, so I went
to see Maureen McIntyre in the Careers
Service who has worked with arts careers
for a few years. It was nice to have someone
to run through ideas and tell me its not
completely stupid.
With support from the Careers Service,
I applied for the Deutsche Bank Award,
which is a 10,000 business start-up
grant and I got shortlisted. I applied
to set up my own workshop, where
I can run my own business.
Im really glad I did it because Ive never
had to do a full budget before. I do my
own admin but Ive never had to calculate
or forecast proft or loss. It was challenging
but I now have a business plan I can use
to formalise what I really want to achieve
with my idea.

MY EXPERIENCE:
HARSH VAIDYA
PhD Stem Cell Biology,
Centre for Regenerative Medicine
Business skills training offered by the Universitys
Institute for Academic Development is helping
Harsh, from India, prepare for a career in business.
When I fnish my PhD I plan to get a job in
industry, maybe a pharmaceutical company
or a biotechnology company not in R&D
but more in business development.
Theres a lot of help available at Edinburgh
if someone wants to pursue a career in
industry or start their own business.
The Institute for Academic Development
(IAD) runs workshops throughout the year,
giving you basic knowledge of business
fnance, business plans and team building.
Last year I attended the Institutes
LEADER Summer School in Denmark.
It was really helpful because there were
sessions on entrepreneurship and business,
personality development, leadership and
communication, and intellectual property
and copyright. We also learned how to
communicate our research to the public.
I think its always important to have
additional skills because when you go
for a job its not only your theoretical
knowledge or how you work in the lab
that counts, but how you communicate
with others, or how you work in a team,
so all this training really helps.
I think Id be pretty competitive when
applying for jobs because employers
also look for what you do alongside your
qualifcation, and I can demonstrate skills
from these workshops and the other
things Ive done here.

MY EXPERIENCE:
JESSIcA PEREz SANTIVANEz
MSc by Research Integrative Neuroscience
Jessica, from Peru, has used her time
at Edinburgh to further her ambitions
to make a global impact.
Because the scholarship funds you for
three years, you have a commitment to
change or impact the lives of others. I can
do that through my research but I want to
go beyond that. Edinburgh has made me
aware of so many global issues and how
you can get involved.
I think this university has not only prepared
me academically and scientifcally, but has
helped me to develop as a person. Ive
pursued passions outside neuroscience
and have been involved in activities and
discussions regarding global issues. I feel
that coming to the University of Edinburgh
was one of the best decisions Ive ever
made its had such a positive impact
on my life.
I wanted to improve the quality of life
of patients, so I chose Edinburgh for its
extensive disease-related research.
The programme enabled me to become
better trained for a career in research and
gave me the confdence to apply for PhD
study. Ive not only secured a PhD position
at the University of Cambridge, but also
the prestigious Gates Scholarship.
I was really surprised to get the
scholarship because its very competitive.
To be successful you have to show
academic excellence, leadership skills
and that you are willing to help others,
but I have loads of volunteering
experience, which helped a lot.
Getting involved

Masters programmes are designed to
deepen knowledge in a subject studied
at undergraduate level, although some of
our postgraduate offering may be suitable
for students looking to change direction.
Students on our taught masters programmes
typically undertake a combination of taught
modules, coursework and supervised
research. Studies culminate in a dissertation
or equivalent project.
Most of our masters programmes, across
all subjects, lead to the award of MSc to
distinguish postgraduate masters from
our undergraduate MA degree. Other
qualifcations we offer include an MBA,
LLM, MMus, MEd and MTh. Edinburgh
College of Art students will fnd Master
of Arts and Master of Fine Arts (MAs
and MFAs) make up the majority of
postgraduate degrees awarded.
Full-time duration: one year
Research programmes
Masters by Research
The MSc by Research is designed to
prepare students for advanced research,
although it can be taken as a qualifcation
in its own right. An MSc by Research is
assessed by research coursework,
examination and a dissertation.
Full-time duration: one year
MPhil
The MPhil is ideal for students who need
to develop strong all-round knowledge of
their subject, in-depth understanding of a
specialised area, and the research skills to
carry out and present a piece of original
research for submission for a higher degree.
The MPhil is assessed by thesis. You may
extend your studies to PhD registration
subject to satisfactory progress.
Full-time duration: two years
PhD
A PhD is the highest academic research
qualifcation, entailing research training
and supervised research, either on a
one-to-one basis with a supervisor(s) or as
part of a research team. PhD students gain
the specialist background knowledge for
the projected research, and develop the
skills appropriate to research in that feld.
Their work culminates in a thesis.
The precise focus of the research will
be agreed between the student and the
supervisor and is likely to develop over the
course of the PhD. The PhD is assessed by
an oral examination in which the candidate
defends his or her research thesis.
Full-time duration: three years
Professional doctorates
Professional doctorates are specialist
qualifcations designed for professional
development in specifc areas, such as
engineering, education and psychology.
Professional doctorates combine
advanced research training, a substantial
contribution to knowledge through your
own research and a rigorous refection
on professional practice.
Full-time duration: varies between
three and seven years
Part-time study
Please note that although many of our
on-campus programmes offer part-time
options, these are only available to UK and
EU students due to UK visa regulations.
Online distance learning
As the largest provider of online
distance learning in the Russell Group,
we can offer an exceptional range
of online study more than 45 online
programmes across more than 10 subject
areas. Just like our on-campus provision,
all our online masters are delivered by
dedicated academics, many of whom
are leaders in their feld.
Our experience in delivering high-
quality online distance learning is
substantial. Our e-learning researchers
and practitioners are among the most
respected in the feld and one of our
early online programmes, the Edinburgh
Surgical Sciences Qualifcation, won an
E-Learning UK Gold Award in 2010. We
were the UKs frst university to offer
Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs),
demonstrating our ongoing commitment
to developing innovative online learning.
Our fexible and supportive online
distance learning programmes are an
increasingly popular choice for students
looking to balance further study with
professional or family commitments.
Duration: varying lengths of
programmes are offered
