Nearlyeveryadult(withtheexceptionofafewSenators)hasusedanATM,probablywithoutmuchthoughtabout
whoownsandoperatesit.ManyATMsbelongtoFinancialInstitutionsFIs(Banks,CreditUnions,etc.),andthese
FIstypicallyoffertheATMasaconveniencefortheircustomerbaseandevenfornoncustomers.Thisprovides
afterhoursaccesstoahostoftransactionssuchascashwithdrawals,deposits,andtransfers.Thisisaservicethat

Howdoestheprocessingwork?WhenanATMtransactionisprocessedthemachinemakescontacttobeginthe
authorizationprocess.TheATMmachinehasaTID(terminalIDnumber).Thisisthenumberthatidentifiesit
uniquelywithintheprocessingsystem.Thisishowthenetworksallowthetransactiontobecompleted.ThisTID

NowtheATMcanconnecttothenetworksthroughourprocessingcenterandthentothecardholdersbank.If
therearesufficientfundsintheATMcardholdersaccountforthewithdrawalrequest,thetransactionwillbe
completed.
OncetransactionsareapprovedtheATMreceivestheauthorizationanddispensesthecashrequested.TheATM
canalsobeusedifsomeonejustwantstochecktheiraccountbalanceortransferfundsbeforeorafter
