The place I worked at was the base maintenance in Shilo The jobs they do involved repairing or building weapons, vehicles, computers many more So like mechanics, welders, weapon technicians, computer tech etc. The working environment was good, people got along with each other just fine It was a job where you had to get your hands dirty all the time which was fun Everyone had a good working attitude, hardly complained about anything and trained me pretty well
Meeting the employees It was a privilege meeting some of the people at the base During my work experience I met multiple employees They always stay on task but they have their moments for fun as well Most of the people I met have been working there as a civilian Had my first conversation with a veteran who served 60 years in the military and his name was Tom Hicks
The Opening So what kind of work I did was mostly involved in changing the tires The tools I would use was a socket wrench to take off the lug nuts I would first remove the plate off the tire and I would use a bar to squeeze in between then lift the plate off the tire I had to mark the two tires and the back ones so we wouldnt get them confuse when compressing air in the tires They had a machine called the tire machine where it takes the rim off the tire completely Then we add new tires on the rim, finally we compress air into them and see if its the right amount of air needed
Wade taught me how to change the oil on a truck Learned how to change my own battery on a vehicle Also learned how to change the diesel on another vehicle We went underneath the truck and use the grease gun on a grease fitting or also called nipple I certainly loved working with wade because hes always confident, knows what he's doing and
This is a LAV 3 This is an light armoured vehicle used for assistance and can provide help in many ways The carrying capacity of holding infantry soldiers is around 8 personnel's This vehicle is equipped with a daytime optical thermal imaging system For the weapon system it is equipped with M242 Bushmaster, coaxial 7.62-mm machine gun, 5.56 mm or 7.62 mm machine guns is positioned on top of the turret. The LAV III also has eight 76-mm grenade launchers in two clusters of four launchers positioned on each side of the turret Next I worked with a guy name josh and he worked on bigger components Such as a Combine, Fire truck and Military trucks Again I just took the tires off with a socket wrench, change the battery and we took a look at some of the engines as well
Next Wade took me out on a tour of the base He shown me the PT base Their own little hospital There was place for soldiers that were provided therapy because some have been suffering from PTSD I go to see the HQ Seen the Shilo Military Museum
Later on when we finished wade took me to the ice rink We had to fix the Zamboni We found out that the battery needed to be replaced with a new one We grabbed a new one and put it back in the Zamboni Then we used a tool called a multi meter to measure the electric current, voltage and if it was stable enough After we finished with the Zamboni we headed back to base maintenance I went to go work with Josh again on the combine I couldnt really work on the combine because Im not experienced enough So I just washed it and went underneath to take out loads of dirt Replace the tires with new ones Fix the door Third Day on the Job Well in the morning mark took me out to the PT base I had the opportunity of meeting the RECCE battalion So we did morning PT We went biking for an hour or so during PT After we finished we headed back to RECCE HQ I talked to superior officer of the unit and his name was Michel I had a long conversation with him of how many years he served, what kind of training courses he had to take etc.
Him and his unit had to work on some stuff dealing with their equipment. So I was sent to the Sniper unit. I was given the tour of the their weapon system. Carried some of their weapons such as a brownie pistol, C6 assault riffle, m40O5 sniper rifle or a C9 sniper rifle. Even other equipment such as a ghillie suit, armour, grenades, smoke grenades, night vision goggles and thermal optic sights etc.
The man who was showing me everything was Cpl Hodgeson aka Hodge Hes been professional sniper over 25 years now A sniper can be a lone wolf or can be a two man unit, ones a shooter and the other a spotter Being a sniper involves stealth, accuracy, marksmanship and able to camouflage with their surroundings
So I went back to RECCE I got insight of how there unit works, what tasks they do daily mostly repairing their equipment, vehicles and weapons Doing PT What kind of chores they have to do Going over details about the mission Got to hear some unique stories about what it was like out on a mission
Well for one you have to be confident of what you are doing Have to understand what your main objective is You must be able to trust the other guy next to you Have to show them they can rely on you Be a leader if no one else is willing to
What I learned about myself during my work experience I learned that I dont want to be an officer anymore Im more interested in being the guy taken the orders then giving them Im a quick learner of doing hands on work I just need to work on listening more when given intel of the mission I know I am suited for this kind of work environment and career
