Introduction

The Project – “Font Page Layout of a News Daily” I have used the windows
version of QwarkXPress Passport 6.1 Version, and for the final delivery of the
project I had to use PDF creator for the ease of mailing and taking print out
from the Cyber Café as ‘Qwark’ is not a commonly used software

The materials that I have used have been sourced from the websites of
various national dailies and have been modified from their original versions
to suit the layout and also as test of my abilities.
Steps

1)
2) Getting Started: Open Qwark and click on file, thereafter click on new
and on to projects. The software would ask you the parameter of the
projects. For the ease of taking print out I have used A4 size sheet
with normal margin, 7 Columns, and gutter width of 3.5mm. It should
however noted a original newspaper generally contains 8 columns
with wider columns size.

4) Drawing the Top Part: You
would observe a page with
blue column strip would
open in font of you. The
next thing you need to do is
to draw out the top portion
of the newspaper.

columns it has blue

another column under
the Name Plate with
black background and
white ‘all caps’ fonts
giving the details of
Price, Date and any
other info. It also
spans the entire 7
columns with Arial 9
‘All Caps’ as font size.

2) Main News: For the purpose of the main news I have used up 6 out of
the 7 column of the newspaper. What one needs to do is to cross link
the various word column so that the news matter automatically flows
from one column to the other with ease. All one needs to make sure
that they all end at the same length. Also we can ad main picture as
I have done, but one needs to be sure that the picture also maintains
the column parameters. i.e. they start and end in a one or more
column. The Crosslink icon has been shown in the image 4. The
Headline has been drawn in Arial 24 font size and spans 5 columns.
The column text is of standard Arial 7 font size. The column size is
standard of 23.71 mm with varying length to accommodate the main
photo.

columns

3) The lower 2nd News: The Second news ‘Taliban attack’ news has been
shaped in 2 columns as this help breaking out the monotonous 6
columns of the main news. Over here we again use the ‘cross link’
tool to join the two columns. The headline of this particular news has
been done in Arial 9 bold font, the body has however been kept in the
standard Arial 7 font. The Column width is 37.18mm each with height
of 51.43 mm.

4)
5) Lower news: The last news material is of is again of regular column
size. It also has the picture sized out in the 4th column. Sizing out any
picture is easy as one needs only click ‘fit picture to box’ as shown in
the ‘image 5. The Column width reverts to the original of 23.37 mm
with the height of 70.56 in all the 3 columns. This also accommodates
the photographs in it as shown in the image 5. The headline font is of
Arial 12 but the body text is of standard Arial 7 font size.

the desired size.

6) Side News: The side News carries snap shot of various articles,
including “inside” stories and page address. This may include
business news, entertainment and sports information etc. It is
generally observed that most Newspapers tend to limit the size the
column to one only. The ‘Inside’ has been done with Arial 12 font size
to attract immediate attention with background being that of 30%
diluted yellow.

7) Adding lines: Adding lines between news has 2 main purpose, one
been that is helps the reader in indentifying the news and second is
of just beautification. However the middle line is drawn in red to
represent where the news paper folds. In the final out put the line is
not there.

8) Solus: Most papers carry font page Adds, it may be of half, quarter or
less than quarter in size. For our purpose we have less than quarter
size. The measurement of the add is 77 into 134 mm.

9) Converting to PDF: As mentioned in the introduction the documents

needs to be convertered to PDF for ease in printing and mailing.
However it should eb noted that converting any Qwark 6.1 version file
to pdf would reduce the original size to 95% for the purpose of
printing.
