WAKAN VERSION HISTORY

1.67 (6/2/05)
- Full compounds (including reading & meaning) can now be printed on character c
ards. These compounds are taken from vocabulary by frequency thus enabling you t
o view x most frequent compounds for a given character. The behavior of this new
feature can be changed by new controls in the Settings -> Character cards print
ing.
- New shortcut: Ctrl-K: Add word to vocabulary. Works in Dictionary, Editor, Cha
r.compounds and Vocabulary mode.
- Editor: fixed kana mode, it no longer converts to kanji.
- New option: Editor->Auto-save on exit.
- New option: Editor->Auto-load on start.
- Removed double-click on vocabulary category check-list.
- Fixed several bugs with shortcuts.
- Fixed many other small bugs.
1.66 (2/24/05)
- Screen popup should be working now. It was defunct in 1.65.
- Search kanji by "Other" is now remembered.
1.65 (2/21/05)
- Fixed critical bug in the editor. If you answered yes to the "Document has bee
n changed. Do you want to save it?" prompt, which appears when you close Wakan,
wakan unfortunately erased the file instead of saving it.
- Fixed critical bug in the .USR upgrade procedure, which could lead to .USR fil
e corruption.
- '+A+' dictionary search mode ("inside" search). Supported for phonetic & clipb
oard searching. VERY SLOW (cannot use any indexes) and thus search-as-you-type i
s never active for this search (even when "Auto" is checked), you must always pr
ess the Enter key after typing the search string.
- Support for half-width characters within the editor. This behavior is by defau
lt turned on for ASCII characters (english text, etc.), thus when you mix Japane
se & English text it now looks much better. Future versions might support half-w
idth katakana, truly proportional fonts are not planned to be supported. This fu
ntion is not supported in vertical printing.
- Information from various dictionaries for the same word is grouped on one line
separated by / . The most important dictionary is listed first.
- User vocabulary entry is also visible when searching dictionary. It is listed
first, separated by // from the dictionary entries.
- JLPT level displayed for characters (needs new WAKAN.CHR).
- New option on Characters menu (Save characters to file).
- Wakan uses the word frequency chart by Charles Kelly & Alexandre Girardi - fil
e WORDFREQ_CK from Jim Breen's site. Information about frequency of words can no
w be included in .DIC files (if you have downloaded the WORDFREQ_CK file and con
verted it to WORDFREQ_CK.UNI - 16-bit Unicode). There is a new checkbox in Dicti
onary Import to turn this on.
EDICT.DIC has been newly converted with the frequency information. Please re-dow
nload it. The frequency information is not going to be included into the other .
DIC files.
- Kanji compounds can be ordered by frequency with the new "Freq" checkbox.
- New option in Settings->Character list: "How many most frequent compounds to d
isplay in "Freq" mode" which limits compounds display to n most frequent words.
- New option in Settings->Dictionary: "Order by word frequency (where available)
"
- New option in Settings->Dictionary: "Display word count for each word" (which
displays the frequency information if available)
- Dictionaries can now be loaded into memory only partially (only indexes) thus
saving about 60-70% of the memory (but searching is then slower). This behavior
is controlled by a new option in Dictionary manager which can be turned on for s
eparate dictionaries.
- You can select Japanese/Chinese text from Wakan by left-clicking & dragging. W
hen you release the mouse button, Popup Tool is displayed for the selected text.
From there you can copy the text to clipboard, etc. Text in grids, character de
tails window or examples are selectable in this way.
- Multi-select allowed for vocabulary entries.
- Editor auto-scroll removed.
- New editor hotkeys: Ctrl-PgUp and Ctrl-PgDn.

at. In Japanese mode the following encodings are supported: UTF-8, JIS, Shift-JI
S, NEC JIS, EUC (and Unicode). In Chinese mode: UTF-8, Big5, GB-2312 (and Unicod
e). No thorough testing has been made, so please be careful whether the imported
file is okay, report any problems to the forum.
- In Japanese mode, Wakan tries to auto-detect the format of the input file (and
select the default encoding accordingly). No such auto-detection is available f
or Chinese mode.

ile - semicolon delimited file - which can be created by many common DB applicat
ions. Supports the same range of encodings as for editor files.

- Exact example number is shown in random mode.
- You can go to specific example number (using the new hand button in the exampl

- Removed the "EXPERIMENTAL" warning box when running screen popup.

gory cannot be renamed nor deleted). None of former functions concerning learned
characters were changed.
- User file format is backward-compatible (only LEARNED category is displayed in
former Wakan versions).
- Auto-conversion between traditional and simplified characters in Chinese mode

mpounds were displayed. Unfortunately the .DIC files had to be rebuilt. To preve
nt users from accidentally using the corrupted files, version 1.50 does not work
with 1.47 dictionaries and therefore they must be downloaded anew. I apologize
for this inconvenience and I hope you can understand that. I would like to thank
people who noticed these bugs.
- Due to numerous requests, character stroke counts in Japanese mode are now tak
en from KANJIDIC - should be more accurate with modern kanji renderings.

(like "ki wo tsukeru") and minimizes the mistranslation of hiragana-only words (
like frequently assigning "field" for no particle.
- Completely rewritten particle recognition algorithm, it is now much more preci
se. The range of recognized particles is now much greater.
- When manually assigning a translation, the following particle is also assigned

- New feature: Dictionary displays example sentences with english translation fo

does not work with Jim Breen's EXAMPLE.GZ file (it lacks indexes).
