Fitness Clubs Celebrate National Health and Fitness Day on June 7

th
, 2014
EMBARGO Edmonton, Alberta, June 6
th
, 2014 Fitness Industry Council of Canada (FIC) is pleased to
announce our continuing participation in National Health and Fitness Day (NHFD) by having fitness clubs waive
their drop-in fees on Saturday, June 7
th
2014. NHFD is an initiative to increase Canadians participation in fitness
and sports activities which will contribute to good health and help tackle rising healthcare costs.
MP John Weston initiated NHFD in the fall of 2012 by working with his colleagues in the House of Commons. By
2013, Senator Nancy Greene Raine began to involve 100 Canadian Senators and introduced a Bill to create NHFD in
the Senate in fall 2013. Legislators are encouraged to support their local mayors and councillors across the country
to proclaim a day to promote health and fitness for their citizens. This enactment gets cities and towns to join the
national movement of proclaiming the first Saturday in June every year as National Health and Fitness Day.
Last year, FIC saw great potential in this initiative and got involved by having fitness facilities across Canada waive
their drop-in fees for the public on the first Saturday of June each year. Participating clubs encourage their
members to bring friends and family for a workout free of charge on NHFD to promote the importance of physical
activity.
Over 1000 clubs across the country will be waiving their drop-in fees on June 7
th
. Participating clubs will have NHFD
event promotions at their facility. Participating club locations can be found by visiting Gympass.ca.
This is a wonderful event for the fitness industry to showcase the benefits of exercise in a time where physical
participation rates have dropped. FIC has taken leadership in NHFD and provided a platform for less active
Canadians to get involved in a stress-free environment. In turn, we hope to encourage enough people to reach a
public health benefit by getting more Canadians more active, more often, says FICs President, David Hardy.
Its great to have a designated day where the Canadian fitness industry can come together to celebrate something
we all believe in the promotion of a healthy lifestyle, says FICs Executive Director, Trisha Sarker.
MP John Weston expresses his appreciation for the active support Fitness Industry Council of Canada has
demonstrated in marking NHFD in Canada. By working together from sea to sea to sea, with the public and the
private sectors, we can make Canada the fittest nation in the world.
