Introduction: Natural resources crisis and the emergence of various environmental issues and in
particular those related to energy saving led to concerns about sustainable development which
pursue the needs of the present without degrading the environment and thus to enable future
generations to meet their needs. Decreased energy consumption is an important goal of the
European Union countries, because fossil fuel reserves are diminishing and the climate changes
have given a warning, global warming and the rising of the sea levels increase the possibility of
catastrophic climate change that finally will have the effect of life disappearance.
Insulating materials should be carefully analyzed according to the impact they have on the
environment. During the life cycle some insulation materials can have a negative impact,
especially due to the chemical composition or expanded material, which will affect the air and the
water quality. Even though the main purpose of insulation is related to reducing energy
consumption, it should not be forgotten that the use of materials has an impact on the
environment throughout the life cycle of the building.
Aims: Construction is an area that should be carefully considered in the context of sustainable
development, as it is currently responsible for 40-45% of Europe's energy consumption and the
air heating in homes has the highest percentage of all energy activities with a rate of
approximately 40-45%. It is assumed that currently over 50% of the buildings in Europe are
thermally insulated and if this percentage increased, it would significantly reduce heat loss and
energy. Our goal is to find a prescription for masonry mortar based volcanic tuff which replaces
the aggregate completely or in some proportion with volcanic tuff. Also we want to replace the
sand with volcanic tuff in the cement recipe. This mortar should have also good thermal
properties to reduce the insulation requirements of the building.
Materials and Methods: volcanic tuff
Results: In the paper "Sustainable development and the efficiency of insulating materials and
their impact on the environment" we will resume the insulating materials in terms of sustainable
development and we will examine the new mortar bassed volcanic tuff in terms of reducing
energy consumption during manufacturing and will also specify the thermal advantage .
Conclusion: In the present research work we have demonstrated that this new mortar based
volcanic tuff has an advantage in terms of energy consumption required to achieve it and also has
a thermal advantage.
