Dateline

This was mainly shown in older edition newspapers and magazines

to show the date of which the story was written, this is because it
used to sometimes take weeks for the story to get from the
journalist to the print. But now this process is much faster.
Sometimes they are shown on websites because they show older
stories as well as new.
Columns
Columns are nearly always used in
magazine and newspapers, instead of
stretching the tet across the page, there
are different reasons of why they do this.
Columns are created using the grid system
and are then filled in with tet or image.
!argins
The spaces around the page that are blank
are what are called "margins# these are
used to frame your work. $%oid putting
important pieces of tet in these spaces,
occasionally pieces of your work may
o%erlap but as long as it doesn#t in%ol%e
lettering then this isn#t a problem.
All magazines have margins around the page
to make it look professional and neat and are
a necessary for print media.
Crosshead
$ heading that is in the body
of the tet that separates
paragraphs to make the tet
simpler to read.
&e%erse
This is a techni'ue used for dark
backgrounds to print white tet on.
(hite Space
(hite space is actually a really important element of a magazine, because if
you cannot use this con%ection correctly, the page can look unfinished. )t is
space that is left unmarked, not actually always white. The term is sometimes
referred to as "negati%e space#. The portions of the page it can include are*
margins, gutters, and Space between columns, lines of type, graphics, figures,
or objects drawn or depicted.
+eadline
The main title of the page. ,sually in a
different font and sometimes either bold,
italic or underlined. $lso is enlarged to a
big etent
Cut out
These are parts of photographs that
ha%e been cut out and their
background remo%ed. These are good
for small images used to illustrate tet-
they are also easy to fit into the layout.
Drop capital
This is the first letter of a paragraph that is enlarged, made bold
and dropped a few lines.
Unlike the other example, this piece of text doesnt actually have a drop
capital surprisingly.
Spreads
Spreads are layouts that go across more than one page-
the most popular type that magazine#s use is a double
page spread- which this spread is. Usually a magazine will
put one celebrity on a front page, that celebrity then has a new
story out about them that is usually spread across 4 pages whilst
others are over .
.age /umber
.age numbers either appear
at the top of the page or
bottom of the page. .age
numbers are used so people
can easily na%igate to the
page they want.
Blobs and stars
Blobs ad stars are for
important parts of tet
that need to stand out.
They are bright and large
which usually consist of
white tet inside. They
are used for drawing
your eye to specific parts
of the page.
0rientation
0rientation is the layout of
information on the page. .ortrait
is standard for most newspapers
and magazines, but for some
magazines they like to use
landscape on some double page
spreads.
.ull 1uote
This is a part of the body, which is made to stand
out- it is usually placed into a bright coloured
shape and has larger speech mark round it. The
tet is usually of a different font, colour, size or
weight.
!his was in the other magazine article also" it is a
very important thing to add because again it
stands out so the audience is likely to see it first
Strapline
This is the line2paragraph of tet, which is usually
situated beneath the heading. )t is used to gi%e a
little bit more of information about what the article
is going to be about.
!his is usually in bold and always on magazines,
as it was in the other magazine as well because it
is the first bit of information the audience reads to
decide if they want to read the whole article or not.
3rids
.eople use grids to arrange elements on
their page so they look professional. 4or
eample, to get the main image in the
middle of a magazine page, such as the
one on the right, they would use grids,
also to make the columns symmetrical
they would ha%e used grids.
#f you have used grids before then you can
easily tell if a page spread has used grids,
because it aligns everything into place and
you can tell that this page has as everything is
in place.
Border
,sed around a piece of tet2paragraph
to form a bo or border. $ost magazines
have this to make the page look interesting and
when the audiences see it, it is usually the first
thing they read so the information needs to be
interesting.
Base line
This is an imaginary line that the tet is situated on.
%aselines are not actually something you can visually see but you
can imagine where they are, all of print media text is on a line you
can not see but is always straight to make it look professional.
