'Black box' detector joins MH370 search

AFP

PERTH (AFP) - A US Navy "black

box" detector made its muchanticipated debut in the oceanic hunt
for flight MH370 on Friday but
Australia's search chief warned it was
crunch time with the box's signal set to
expire soon.
As the extensive search wore on,
Malaysian opposition leader Anwar
Ibrahim said he believed the country's
long-ruling regime was concealing
information on the crisis, saying "the
government knows more than us."
The Australian naval vessel Ocean
Shield arrived with a "towed pinger
locator" capable of homing in on
signals from the black box, as 14
planes scoured the remote Indian
Ocean search area for signs of a crash
site.
The plane disappeared March 8, and
Australian authorities coordinating the

search have rushed the device into

place with the black box's roughly
30-day location signal set to expire.
Angus Houston, Australia's former
military chief and now coordinator of
the eight-nation search, said "we're
now getting pretty close to the time
when it might expire."
The plane went missing en route
from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with
239 people on board, confounding
aviation experts and sparking criticism
of Malaysian authorities who have
been unable to explain how the jumbo
jet vanished.
Anwar said he was "baffled" by
the Malaysian military's failure despite
detecting the plane crossing back over
the country's airspace following its
mysterious detour.
"Unfortunately the manner in

which this was handled after the first

few days was clearly suspect," Anwar
said in an interview with Britain's
Daily Telegraph.
"One
fact
remains.
Clearly
information
critical
to
our
understanding is deemed missing. I
believe the government knows more
than us," he added, without
elaborating.
Malaysian
authorities
believe
satellite data indicates MH370 crashed
in the Indian Ocean, far off western
Australia.
Ocean Shield, which also bore an
underwater drone vehicle capable of
mapping the seafloor, joined in a
search with the British navy's
hydrographic ship HMS Echo, which
on Thursday began scanning for black
box transmissions.
But despite days of exhaustively
scouring the sea's surface with planes
and ships, no debris has been found to
prove MH370 went down in the area,
let alone pinpoint a crash site.
Australian
Commodore
Peter
Leavy admitted the undersea search
was a shot in the dark for hopes that a
ping can be picked up, adding that the
two ships would need to move at
excruciatingly slow speeds in the deep
waters to improve the chances.

Abbott welcomes Cambodian asylum help

CANBERRA (AAP) - The federal
government
would
welcome
Cambodia's support to resettle
refugees, Tony Abbott says.
Immigration
Minister
Scott
Morrison met with Cambodian Interior
Minister Sar Kheng in Phnom Penh on
Thursday, following Foreign Minister
Julie Bishop's visit in February.
A spokesman for the Cambodian
Council of Ministers told the Phnom
Penh Post on Friday a proposal had
been discussed by the two ministers
and the Cambodian foreign ministry
may release information at a later date.
It has been speculated the
agreement could be worth $40 million

and involve up to 100 refugees, but Mr

Morrison's office has yet to comment.
Prime Minister Tony Abbott told
reporters in Canberra on Friday that
people smuggling was a regional issue
that needed to be dealt with in a
regional way.
"Whether Cambodia were to
accept people (refugees) is really a
matter for Cambodia," Mr Abbott said.
"Any support and co-operation other
countries can give to Australia is
obviously very welcome."
Australia was constantly in talks
with regional partners under the Bali
Process, he said.

"We look forward to further

support from other countries in our
region including Cambodia," he said.
Mr Morrison's spokesman said the
minister was in Cambodia for further
discussions on regional co-operation to
combat people smuggling.
After Ms Bishop's visit to
Cambodia in February, her counterpart
revealed Australia had asked the
country to resettle some refugees.
At the time, Ms Bishop said they
had only discussed the Bali Process.
Australian Greens senator Sarah
Hanson-Young described the potential
deal as irresponsible.

Baby gift for George as

VATICAN CITY (AFP) - Pope
Francis gave Queen Elizabeth II a
royal orb for baby Prince George as
the monarch met him for the first time,
a low-key visit that is the 87-year-old
monarch's first foreign trip since 2011.
The visit took place on Thursday,
a day after the anniversary of the start
of the Falklands War between Britain
and Francis's native Argentina in 1982,
and also came at a thorny moment in
Anglican-Catholic relations - though
officials did not reveal the content of
the closed-door discussions.
The pair capped their talks with a
peculiar exchange of gifts that
included a hamper of food products
from the royal estates.

SA's pub laws survive court

challenge
ADELAIDE (AAP) - South Australia's
late-night lockout laws for pubs and
clubs have survived a Supreme Court
challenge. In a judgment on Friday, the
Full Court of the SA Supreme Court
ruled that the provisions, introduced
last year, were valid.
A group of venue owners had
taken the issue to the court arguing
that the government had overstepped
the mark with the new rules which
contradicted licence conditions.
The rules prevent patrons from
entering venues after 3am and anyone
who leaves a pub or club after that
time will be barred from re-entering.

China under Australian wing in military drill

SYDNEY (AFP) - China has asked to
operate under Australian command
when it takes part in a major
international military exercise led by
the United States later this year, a
report said on Friday.
The Sydney Morning Herald said
it understood that the request from
China's People's Liberation Army
(PLA) was expressed through defence
channels last week, without quoting
any sources.
Until recent years China rarely
took part in international military
exercises and the newspaper said it
was the first time the PLA would
operate under Western command in
such a drill.
Australia's
Defence
Minister
David Johnston would not comment on
the Chinese position but has welcomed
China's involvement in the Rim of the

Pacific exercise which involves more

than 20 nations.
"China has a central role to play in
contributing to regional stability," his
office said in a statement. "We
welcome the positive contributions it
has made to date, and look forward to
continuing to work together to enhance
mutual understanding and facilitate
transparency,
and
build
trust
throughout the region."
The RIMPAC exercise will be led
by the US and involve more than
25,000 personnel. In the previous
RIMPAC in 2012, Australia led the
maritime component of the war game,
coordinating some 40 ships and six
submarines.
It is not known which countries
besides the US will take leadership
roles this year, but nations taking part
include China's traditional rival Japan.

Labor defends WA senate candidate

CANBERRA (AAP) - Labor has gone

of its lead senate candidate in Western

assault, his record of voting for the
Liberal party and a 2013 speech in

which he railed against the dangers of

Labor following "every weird leftie

Tony Abbott weighed into the debate
on Friday, saying there was "division
and dysfunction at the heart of the
West Australian Labor senate team".
"It's proof from deep within the
Labor Party that the Labor Party is
simply not up to the job of
government," Mr Abbott told reporters
in Canberra. "I'm hoping that the
voters of Western Australia are
sufficiently engaged to be paying
attention to this."

Late rally pushes share market higher

BRISBANE (AAP) - Late gains have
pushed the share market slightly higher
ahead of the release of US job
numbers.
Investors are hoping the US nonfarm payrolls employment data for
March, due out on Friday night, will
clarify if harsh weather has been

"These figures are important. All
eyes are on that and the market tends

numbers," he said.

Boral, CSR to join forces in brick making

SYDNEY (AAP) - Building products
maker Boral warns it may have to
close some brick operations if the
consumer watchdog doesn't approve its
proposed joint venture with rival CSR.
The two companies plan to
combine their east coast brickmaking
and distribution businesses in a joint
venture designed to save between $7
million and $10 million a year.
Boral chief executive Mike Kane
said the joint venture was the best way
to ensure the future of Australia's brick
manufacturing sector, which has

suffered due to declining demand as

builders and developers opt for other
materials.
"Solutions like this, in my view, are
the only solutions possible in the face
of the headwinds we face," he said.
"We've got to get to the point where
we can manufacture bricks in
Australia at a return that can attract
capital."
If the deal doesn't receive approval
from the competition watchdog, Boral
would be faced with having to close
some of its operations, Mr Kane said.

Japan says 30 per cent.

Missile misfires at swim titles

Lights, action as Hamilton, Rosberg eye Bahrain

MANAMA (AFP) - Lewis Hamilton
and Nico Rosberg put Mercedes' early
season dominance to its first true test
on Sunday at the floodlit Bahrain
Grand Prix on a track where both
drivers have always struggled.
Hamilton,
the
2008
world
champion, swept to victory from pole
in Malaysia last week ahead of
Rosberg
who
clinched
the
championship opener in Australia.
But despite their lofty positions in
the 2014 title race, the dust and heat of
the troubled Middle East state have
often choked the pair's ambitions.
Hamilton's best finish at the
Sakhir track was second in 2007 while
Rosberg has never made the podium
with his storming drive to pole
position in 2013 yielding a poor ninth
place finish. His best result remains a
humble fifth.
"I've finished on the podium there

a couple of times but, for one reason or

another, I've never managed to get the
win," said Hamilton, whose victory at
Sepang followed a retirement in
Australia.
"Until last week it was the same
story for me with Malaysia, so fingers
crossed this can be the year of
breaking those cycles. We know it's
going to be tough to maintain our
current form, particularly at a circuit
where every team has had so much
running time in testing over the winter,
but I'll be pushing hard to keep those

results coming."
Rosberg is the championship
leader after two events and enjoys an
18-point cushion over Hamilton.
But he too is aware that Bahrain,
which rarely features standout duels,
has not been a happy hunting ground.
"The first two races have been a
great start to my season and I'm
already looking forward to being back
in the car and carrying on that
momentum in Bahrain," said the
German. "It's a great track and I really
enjoy driving it. I've never had much
luck on race weekends here, but it's
definitely the one I'm best prepared for
this year.
"We may be leading both
championships at the moment but our
rivals are breathing down our necks, so
we need to stay focused and keep
doing
our
job
calmly
and
professionally."

was upstaged by McEvoy who
completed the 100-200 double.
Magnussen has admitted his
preoccupation with breaking the 100m
world record brought him unstuck.
McEvoy completed the 100-200m

Adelaide draw with Heart

ADELAIDE (AAP) - A last-minute
equaliser allowed Adelaide United to
pinch a 2-2 draw against Melbourne
Heart on Friday night and climb to
second on the A-League ladder.
The Reds lost a player to a broken
leg, a defender for headbutting, and
also appeared to be losing the game
until Fabio Ferreira's last-gasp goal
squared a feisty fixture.
The heated affair featured the
fifth-fastest goal in the league's
history, two penalties, 11 yellow cards,
a red card and 33 fouls.
After Adelaide's Marcelo Carrusca
scored in 25 seconds at Coopers
Stadium, the Heart hit back with David
Williams and Mate Dugandzic scoring.
And the visitors appeared set for
an upset win until one minute from
fulltime when Ferreira saved the Reds
in what looms as a costly match for
Adelaide.

Reynolds give Bulldogs

one-point win
SYDNEY (AAP) - A Josh Reynolds
field goal was enough to seal
Canterbury a hard-fought 9-8 win over
the Sydney Roosters at Allianz
Stadium on Friday night.
Reynolds calmly slotted the
match-winner from 20m out in the
70th minute a set after the Roosters
had first turned down a penalty shot at
goal and then halfback Mitchell Pearce
missed a relatively easy field-goal
attempt.
Reynolds' successful kick was the
only point in a tough, absorbing
second half in soggy conditions after
the two sides were locked at 8-all at
halftime.
The Bulldogs had the energetic
five-eighth to thank in the 57th minute
when he pushed Roosters winger
Daniel Tupou into touch just before he
got the ball over the tryline.

SYDNEY (AAP) - Golf's Australian

year be played on consecutive
weekends in November.
The PGA Tour of Australasia on

The Masters, won by Adam Scott at

from November 20-23 at Victoria's

Sydney from November 27-30.
A two-week gap has been left
before the season-ending Australian
PGA Championship, suggesting the

year.

Rebels lose to Highlanders

MELBOURNE
(AAP)
The
Melbourne Rebels' quest for their first
Super Rugby win abroad has fallen
tantalisingly close with a 33-30 defeat
to the Highlanders in Dunedin on
Friday night.
Fullback Jason Woodward scored
with only four minutes remaining,
which he converted to give his side a
chance of victory but they couldn't find
the points they desperately sought.
Rocked by the loss of five-eighth
Bryce Hegarty in only the second
minute, the Rebels scrambled to level
with the home side early in the second
half before the Highlanders again
kicked away.
Hegarty fell heavily and suffered
concussion while taking a high ball
and the Rebels were almost left
without a play-maker altogether when
his replacement, Angus Roberts, also
suffered a head knock.

CANBERRA (AAP) - A barnstorming

Man-of-the-match McCabe was
superb for the Brumbies in

It was the 26-year-old Test

Eels end NRL drought

BRISBANE (AAP) - Parramatta have
finally ended their two-year away
drought with a gripping 25-18 NRL
victory over Brisbane Broncos at
Suncorp Stadium.
Chris Sandow and Jarryd Hayne
led the resurgent Eels home in a
quality second-half where the lead
changed four times before Sandow
sealed the result with a 40m field goal.
It had been 21 matches since
Parramatta - wooden-spooners in the
past two seasons - enjoyed their last
success on the road, also against
Brisbane way back in 2012. But they

Hawks smash Dockers

MELBOURNE (AAP) - Hawthorn
have made an emphatic statement
about their AFL premiership defence,
belting Fremantle by 58 points at the
MCG on Friday night.
The Hawks' 21.11 (137) to 11.13
(79) win is the highest score kicked
against the Dockers under coach Ross
Lyon while Fremantle captain
Matthew Pavlich played a lone hand
with four goals.
After they lined up to watch the
unfurling of their premiership flag in a
pre-game ceremony, the Hawks turned
the grand final rematch into a
mis-match.
They opened the game with 6.1,
while the side widely expected to
challenge Hawthorn for this year's
premiership were kept scoreless.
Hawks midfielder Jordan Lewis
rebounded from a quiet game last
week to dominate at the stoppages,
while Sam Mitchell returned from a
calf injury to also star.
Cyril Rioli was outstanding,
providing the individual highlight of
the match with a screamer of a mark
and then playing on to kick a goal.
