May Meeting Notes


Michelle Sidrane, President, welcomed everyone and
opened the meeting at 9:30am

Treasurer, Winifred Zubin reported that despite reduced
revenues for the Maple Breakfast, and membership re-
newals, the budget remains on plan. Michelle announced
that the Pasternak Family Foundation has renewed its
grant for the next fiscal year.
Michelle announced her decision to step down as Presi-
dent at the end of this term, June 30
th
, and intends to
remain involved. She believes that it is important to ro-
tate leadership as it allows for new energy and new ideas
to move the mission forward.
Peg Ellsworth, Nominating Chair, thanked Michelle for
her forthright approach to moving FF forward and estab-
lishing a roadmap for the future of the organization. The
slate for officers for FY 2015 is Yvonne Reuter, Presi-
dent, and Winifred Zubin, Vice President. Open officer
positions at this time include Secretary and Treasurer.
All are encouraged to step forward and contact Peg Ells-
worth.
The Leadership Committee recommended continuing
with the Pumpkin Patch and Pumpkin Festival for 2014.
FF thanks Ben Fenton for allowing the use of his back-
yard.
Community Garden Chair Carol Birnbaum is coordinat-
ing the garden with Lynne Collins. As of now there are
only a few plots left. If interested, please contact either
Carol or Lynne. On May 18
th
there will be a Community
Garden as well as Pumpkin Patch and Gazebo Garden
clean up. See calendar for details.

Largest Street Fair of the season is here in
Fleischmanns on Saturday May 24
th
.
On Memorial Day Weekend, May 24
th
10-4pm, Fleischmanns will
once again host a village-wide celebration and street fair. We ex-
pect good weather but if heavens open up as they did last year,
there is a rain date of May 25
th
.
Look forward to a day of music, food and shopping as well as fun.
As many as 50 vendors are expected and the sidewalks of Main
Street will be lined with enticing booths. New this year will be a
food court with tables and chairs placed in front of the Gazebo
where music entertainment will be in full force. Watch for our very
own Maple Princesses as they ride down Main Street in a spectacu-
lar vintage car. Then visit the display of other antique cars.
Songstress and MC Cat Blume will guide you through the day of
entertainment beginning with Connie Mohar and Jeanne Palmer on
accordion and fiddle, Country Music Express and of course, Cat
Blume herself covering the musical landscape from standard and
blues to country and Doo Wop.
A mobile health unit from Margaretville Hospital will be on hand
to provide you with all the information you need for healthy living.
Want a pet, then visit the Delaware Humane Society and check out
the pooches. The Pine Hill/Fleischmanns Rotary will be scooping
their delicious ice cream and the Belleayre Music Festival will
share all the good news about the upcoming concert series. Check
out the Fleischmanns Alliance for Business booth and oh yes, the
Fleischmanns First booth where you can make a donation and re-
new your membership or even buy a flashy Fleischmanns First Tee
Shirt.

Wagner Avenue Park News

The Village has received the FEMA Blue Book with an approved scope and esti-
mated total budget of $500,000 for the park restoration. This includes the tennis
courts, concession stand, playground, and other miscellaneous items. Bids for the
tennis courts are being solicited and are due back by May 19th. Once bids are re-
ceived and reviewed the Village will award the contract to the lowest responsive bidder and the construction can
begin. The bids for the concession stand and playground will go out separately once the plans and specifications approved by FEMA
are translated into bid packages. It is hoped that the newly renovated tennis courts with fencing, nets, and maintenance equipment
will be ready for play by the end of the summer. Tennis court construction is a complex process that takes time to do properly.

The soccer field is open and in use again this summer.

Although the Village's appeal nets us full reimbursement for the concession stand and tennis courts, the financial allotment for the
playground falls short of the submitted plans which included a fully ADA accessible playground. The Village is reviewing the plans
as well as the other funds that have already been raised through donations and grants to determine what the final design of the play-
ground will be.

Fleischmanns Then and Now
Fleischmanns Bank Building
Fleischmanns Main Street, from early in the 20th Century, has
always hosted at least one bank. The building at 1084 Main
Street that houses what is today the Community Bank was built
in 1911 as The First National Bank. Although there is no cor-
nerstone marking the construction date of the building which is
unusual, there is a capstone visible on the front and center of the
building at the very top. It simply reads '1911.' At various times
parts of the building had been used as medical and dental offic-
es and as a pharmacy. Although a number of different banks
have occupied the building over the years, it continues strong as
a financial institution and a cornerstone business for the com-
munity.

FF Meeting Notes Continued.
Plans for Memorial Day Event are shaping up. Ahead of last
year over 30 vendors have signed up. New this year will be
an antique car display and a food court. Entertainment will
feature the Catskill Mountain Boys, Jeanne and Connie and
all will be mcd by singer Cat Blume.
Carol OBeirne reported on the Fleischmanns Alliance for
Business. See article.
Fleischmanns Welcome Committee, Yvonne reported that
she has names of 24 new property owners. Plans are being
confirmed for a welcome basked including local product and
information to be personally delivered to new home owners.
Mayor Todd Pascarella reported on the FEMA commitment
for the Park. See article.
Biomass project follow up to the Fleischmanns Forum of
February will be a Village forum on August 2
nd
. More de-
tails to come from Todd Pascarella.
Carol OBeirne of Catskill Chamber of Commerce an-
nounced the annual awards dinner on May 21. This year
honorees are Michael Cioffi of The Phoenicia Diner, Mel
Bellar of Zone Landscaping Design, Susan and Jim Kelly of
Susans Pleasant Pheasant and the Catskill Mountains Club.
Peg Ellsworth gave an update on the theater where work will
begin soon on the storefronts and marquee with clean up and
gutting of the upstairs as well as the patching the roof. After
the work is completed, the committee will be called upon to
begin planning. Peg also reported that the NYS Office of
Historic Preservation is interested in the entire village of
Fleischmanns being listed on the state and national registry
of historic villages. She will invite OPRHP to present at a
future Fleischmanns Forum.
A brief discussion of the Board of Supervisors vote to im-
pose a 2% bed tax was discussed briefly and will be resumed
at the next meeting

Headwaters History Days
June 7 & 8, 2014
The historic organizations based in Rox-
bury, Andes and Middletown are working
together to highlight the historic sites of the
three townships. Fifteen museums, land-
mark structures and historic sites will be
open for tours, exhibits and special pro-
grams on June 7th and 8
th
when Headwaters
History Days celebrates the heritage, cul-
ture, folk life and landscape of the East
Branch Delaware River towns of Mid-
dletown, Roxbury and Andes.

In Fleischmanns, both the Museum of
Memories and Skene Memorial Library
will be open 10 - 4 on Saturday and 10 -1
on Sunday. Special displays focused on
Fleischmanns history will be highlighted.
On Sunday, June 8

, Congregation Bnai
Israel will be open their historic building
for visits 10-1. Both Congregation Bnai
Israel and Skene Memorial Library are on
the National and State Registers of Historic
Places.
Fleischmanns Alliance for Business (FAB) Means Business!
In November 2012, Fleischmanns First sponsored a networking event for business
owners in the 12430 community. The goal was to provide a forum for business own-
ers to share their experiences and concerns; the hope was the formation of a Fleisch-
manns business group. A few months later such a group was begun and today the
newly named Fleischmanns Alliance for Business (FAB) is gaining momentum with
its goal to contribute to the revitalization of Fleischmanns and to promote area busi-
nesses.

Kim OBrien is the acting Chairperson of FAB and welcomes all people with busi-
nesses in the 12430 zip code. Monthly meetings take place at 5:30 PM on the fourth
Thursday of each month at the Skene Memorial Library on Main Street in Fleisch-
manns. Some specific items on FABs recent agenda include cost effective group
advertising, a brochure highlighting FAB businesses which will be available at the
FAB table at the upcoming Memorial Day Street Fair and the creation of a Village
kiosk which will display information about local businesses as well as public notic-
es.

For the future, FAB using the fleischmannsny logo will explore creating a website
and improving local signs and billboards. The group is growing and wants to en-
courage more independent business owners and entrepreneurs to join them; and so
four mixers are in planning stages the this year with refreshments sponsored by
Fleischmanns First.

FAB is a great forum for sharing ideas and mutual support. The next meeting will
take place on May 22

Public Meeting Regarding the
Village Streams

The long awaited study of the Fleisch-
manns streams, known as the LFA (Local
Flood Analysis) is under way. The goal is
to study the streams
throughout the village and
make recommendations
for the residents to consid-
er that will result in a
more resilient Village as
regard to future flooding.
Your input is critical to the success of this
project. The consultants have held one
meeting in April and the next public out-
reach meeting will be on Monday May 19th
at 6p.m. at the Skene Library on Main
Street. Come find out about the study and
share your comments and concerns.
Greater Fleischmanns Museum of Memories
The Museum opens for the 2014 season on Saturday, May 24 in conjunction with the
Fleischmanns First Memorial Day Street Fair. There will be a new display of Then &
Now images of Fleischmanns, as well as the ever-changing display of recently do-
nated items. There will also be a Flea Market table, and Plant Sale to benefit the
Museum.

The Museum will be open Saturdays from May 24 until October 11; during July &
August, also Thursdays & Fridays. Regular hours are 11am - 3pm.

Summer Season
Zoom Gallery located at 1164 Main
in Fleischmanns will feature the
paintings of Martha Jean during the
course of the Summer, 2014 Sea-
son, as well as other local art-
ists. There will also be occasional
live music at the gallery as well as
crafts, gifts and cards in the outdoor
tent. The gallery is open Fri-Sun,
10am-5pm.
Due to the Memorial Day Street
Fair, Main Street will be closed
on May 24, 8am-4pm.

Dear Fleischmanns Community,

Memorial Day weekend is fast approaching and this is the biggest weekend of the year
for the Village. Thanks to all of the volunteers and to Fleischmanns First who have
worked year after year to make the street fair a real signature event for the area. And
thanks to the Fire Department and everyone involved for making the parade such a sta-
ple for the community as well. Last year's event was basically a rain out, so we need to
see even more folks there this year than usual to make up for it. See you all there!
