Drexel Lesson Plan Format:
I. Content and Standards: Standards for this lesson are aligned with the
content, the text and materials.
a. S11.B.2.1.4: Explain how natural selection can impact allele frequencies
of a population.
b. S11.B.2.1.2: Explain how genetic mutations may result in genetic and
phenotypic variations within a species.
II. Prerequisites: Prior to this lesson, students will have received direct
instruction via Powerpoint presentation on the principles of evolution by
natural selection. Students also will have worked in groups to gather
evidence for natural selection, creating a presentation to share with the class.
III. Instructional Objective: Students will complete the goldfish evolution lab
and respond to post-lab analysis questions with at least 70% accuracy.
IV. Instructional Procedures: BDA Before beginning the lab, I will discuss with
the class the expectations of the lab, as well as the lab protocol. I will also
give the students a Do-Now question to refresh their memory on what
theyve already learned about evolution. During the lab, I will circulate the
room, answering questions and providing guidance wherever necessary.
Finally, I will ask students to produce an Exit Ticket, where they will reflect
on their lab experience.
V. Materials and Equipment: Cheddar Goldfish crackers, pizza Goldfish
crackers
VI. Assessment/Evaluation: Students will record data, respond to analysis
questions, and reflect on the laboratory experience with at least 70%
accuracy.
VII. Differentiation: Prior to beginning this lab, ELLs will complete a homework
assignment in which they create flashcards for all relevant vocabulary terms.
Students will be asked to review flashcards for 15 minutes the night before
and will be allowed to have flashcards on their desk during the activity.
VIII. Technology: A Promethean board will be used to display the Do-Now,
agenda, and Exit Ticket.
IX. Self-Assessment I will evaluate the students responses to the Do-Now,
analysis questions, and Exit Ticket. If many of the students perform at a
success rate of lower than 70%, I will re-evaluate.

Standards: S11.B.2.1.4: Explain how natural selection can impact allele frequencies of a
population. S11.B.2.1.2: Explain how genetic mutations may result in genetic and
phenotypic variations within a species.

Content Objective(s): Students will record data and respond to post-lab analysis questions
with 70% accuracy.

Language Objective(s): Students will become familiar with vocabulary related to
evolution and natural selection, using this vocabulary to analyze trends in their data.

Key Vocabulary:
natural selection, predator,
population, generation, hypothesis,
adaptation

Supplementary Materials:
Vocabulary flashcards

Materials:
Cheddar Goldfish crackers
Pizza Goldfish crackers

Higher Order Questions:
What do you think will happen to each type
of fish over 10 to 20 generations? Why?

In 2-3 sentences, explain how the Goldfish
lab demonstrated the principles of
evolution and natural selection.

3. Lab
4. Post-lab analysis questions
5. Exit ticket
Assessment: Students will record data and respond to post-lab analysis questions with
70% accuracy.

Reflections/Self-assessment: I will utilize the results of student work on the Do-
Now, lab results and analysis, and Exit ticket to evaluate student performance. If
many students score below 70% on any aspect, I will re-evaluate.
