Today will help us better understand the ideas and values in the film, within
the context of the movies time & place (assess. task)
Study Guide- Kings Speech (questions and royal family activity)
Definition of Adversity (n): condition marked by misfortune or distress
LESSON LEARNING OBJECTIVE SYLLABUS OUTCOMES
To be able to understand the role of the marriage relationship in The Kings
Speech, and how this relates to the films context and representation of
adversity.
1. A student describes and explains the relationships between composer,
responder, text and context in particular texts.
TEACHING AND LEARNING ACTIVITIES
1. Mark roll settling activity: Deep understanding barometer (15 mins)
Students to rate their response to the following statement, on a barometer were 0-absolutely disagree and 10-absolutely agree
Teacher to write up barometer and statement the royal family of England has significant power and ruling responsibility. Also write up that 3 dot
points explaining choice need to be included underneath.
Students to copy down barometer, then complete and explain their answer. Some will be shared with the class.
2. 11:15 writing task from study guide (35 mins) viewing focus questions for key scenes in the movie.
Teacher to distribute viewing questions worksheet. Dont go through the questions. screen the scene sequence (Clipped moments of Bertie & wife Elizabeth)
Students to answer the questions while watching the scene montage.
3. 11:50 Deep understanding barometer 2 (15 mins)
Teacher to write up barometer and statement Bertie overcame his adversity through the relationship/s he had with his wife (and Lionel). Also write
up that 3 dot points explaining choice need to be included underneath.
Students to copy down barometer, then complete and explain their answer. Some will be shared with the class.
CLOSURE 12:05 Teacher to instruct students that they need to convert their three dot points to the second barometer into an answer to this question:
Discuss how the film represents King George VIs relationship with his wife and how it helped him overcome his adversity. Refer
to the significance of the royal context to this relationships in your answer.
ASSESSMENT Assess student ability to critically analyse aspects of a text independently (by using focus questions to create extended responses)
