Electrical Load Calculator for Single Family Dwelling

of Less Than 50 Square Meter

Researcher
Michael B. Tomas
Master of Science in Electrical Engineering
Major in Power System

The significance of a safe electrical design could not be denied. In the Philippines alone,
hundreds of electrical related accidents were recorded and even took several lives and destroyed
properties.
Knowledge of determining the capacity of the main circuit breaker and size of wire are
required to prevent electrical accidents. More often the need to refer from appropriate handbooks
is necessary for knowing the correct sizes and capacity of electrical fixtures which from the fact
that certain individuals were not aware of the danger pond be installing additional electrical loads
in their houses or installing electrical wiring without any prepared electrical plans that were
designed, signed and sealed by a licensed professional electrical practitioner.
In the Philippines, preparation of electrical plan was one of the basic requirements for
any electrical wiring installations as mandated by RA 7920 or known as the New Electrical
Engineering Law. The details of the said electrical plans were also specified in Article 2 of the
Philippine Electrical Code (Part 1).
These electrical plans served as basis for cost of material estimates, a blueprint guide
during installation and safety precaution document before and during actual wiring installations.
Sophisticated software for electrical engineering applications particularly on electrical
plan preparation were made available in the international market but with a very high cost. An
alternative way was to use a simple excel format but it came with limited capacity in relation to
working on electrical load calculations, generating riser diagrams, determination of proper size
of wire, conduit, breaker, etc.
This technical paper was prepared with the aim of presenting computer-based software
entitled Electrical Load Calculator for Single Family Dwelling of Less than 50 Square Meters.
It also presents how the system generates an electrical layout plan having all the design aspects
for residential electrical installation such as computation and schedule of loads, riser diagram,
legend, size of feeder wire and rating of over current protection devices including wiring
inspection report similar to what TARELCO I requires.
The Research and Development cycle was employed in coming up with the computer-based
system. To realize its usefulness, an experts evaluation and validation of the system was
solicited. To assume of the legitimacy of the Registered Professional Engineer was sought.
The following presented the summary of the findings on the development of the proposed
system based on the ratings given by the users:
1. The system performs the computations automatically and shows summary of results
including the riser diagram. It has also the capability of saving, editing opening, and
printing of results.
2. The result of the study was found relevant and useful to the electrical engineering
profession.
3. The system has the capability to allow users to revise and retrieve data stored.

4. The system can do accurate computations.
5. Symbols for electrical fixtures are provided, making the system user friendly.
The report shows that the system performs excellent for low cost houses single dwelling
up 50 square meter floor area generating results, including saving, opening and editing. As
reflected in the Evaluation of Experts.
Based on the findings and conclusions of the study, the following recommendations are
offered:
1. Upgrading of the developed program for industrial applications.
2. A system should be developed to have it available in handheld device or integrate it
in mobile phones as an added feature to make it more available and handy.
3. The developed system is bound for small dwelling buildings only.
