Chemical engineers apply the principles of chemistry, biology, physics, and
math to solve problems that involve the production or use of chemicals,
fuel, drugs, food, and many other products. They design processes and
equipment for large-scale safe and sustainable manufacturing, plan and
test methods of manufacturing products and treating byproducts, and
supervise production. Employment of chemical engineers is projected to
grow 4% from 2012 to 2022.
Chemical Engineering
The most inspirational part of out world is art. A canvas of seemingly scribbles can
change a persons life... or completely bore them. Art is so versatile; interpretation is the
hands of the viewer. Art is expression, inspiration, perspiration. I strive to better the world
through art, specically by exploring new mediums of doing such. Currently I am
experimenting with casein binders and food pigments to make paint. Sharing my knowledge
with others will quite possibly inspire a chain reaction of casein paintings.
Many paints are made from harsh chemicals, and are purely factory produced. I want
to make paint from natural substances that will look just a good as factory paint, without all
the harsh chemicals. I would be experimenting with different dairy products, fruits,
vegetables, and plants to create natural pigments and binders that would be a feasible
options for painters.

My Inspiration
Magnablend in Waxahachie exploded my sophomore year, poisoning the air
and environment around it. If they had had a chemist or chemical engineer on staff, then
maybe Magnablends reputation and Waxahachies environment would be cleaner today. I
wish to help companies plan against catastrophes like this so that our world and our
economy will be a healthier place. Diseases are crippling populations today, and
pharmaceuticals are the future. Chemists and chemical engineers are helping nd new
combinations and concepts that are helping heal the world, and Im planning on taking my
major into one of these professions. My high school experiences have guided me thus far,
but now it is time for a new challenge. I am hoping the college classes and international
experiences I have at Texas Tech University will prepare me for this future.

! Define the Problem
I need to choose a long-term design project or
mentorship.
! Identify Criteria and Constraints
-Project must connect the theory and
application in a STEM related field
-Must be applicable to the Engineering Design
Process
-I MUST be passionate enough about the topic
that I will continuously work on it
throughout the year
-Should relate to either my future career or
future life
! Brainstorm Solutions
-Be a teachers aid at an elementary school
-TSA competition: Future technology teacher
-Start a Future Teachers Association Club at
Global High School
-Intern with a Botanist
-Build a greenhouse
-Cross breed plants
-Something with art?
-Something with piano?
-Make my own organic tea bags?
-Star Charting
-Make my own paint
My Journey & the
Engineering Design Process
! Do Background Research (Journal pages
with research)
-Teachers Aid pg. 8, 9, 10, 17, 24
-TSA Competition pg. 17
-Intern with a Botanist pg. 17
-Build a greenhouse pg. 19, 20, 21, 22
-Make my own organic tea bags pg. 22
-Star Charting pg. 33
-Make my own paint pg. 44, 47, 48
! Choose the Best Solution
Make my own paint and relate it to my
future career of Chemical Engineering

! Do Background Research
Upon researching, I found the major benefits of
making your own organic paint, and the
huge detriments of manufactured paint.
Inorganic manufactured paints contain
solvents that outgas Volatile Organic
Compounds (VOCs) as they dry. VOCs
can cause a range of health hazards, such
as drowsiness, headaches, dizziness,
feelings of intoxication, fatigue, mental
confusion, increased heart rate, nausea,
loss of coordination, convulsions, and
even death (Spandorfer, Curtiss, & Snyder,
2010). The VOCs in wall paint alone
contribute 9% of the pollutants in the air
that cause greenhouse gases and smog
(Casa Verde Paint, 2011).
! Define the Problem
I want to relate my passion for art to my future
career. I can make my own paint, and
research how much better it is for human
and environmental health than inorganic
manufactured paint.
! Identify Criteria and Constraints
-Project must connect the theory and
application in a STEM related field
-Must be applicable to the Engineering Design
Process
! Choose the Best Solution & Do
Development Work
I can paint with inorganic manufactured and
organic homemade paint and compare
the vibrancy, consistency, workability,
transparency, and texture (CWTTV).
