ETM 4096 DIGITAL SIGNAL PROCESSING

Trimester II Session 2013 / 2014

Assignment

Important Instructions:

1. This assignment consists of Five (5) questions. Answer ALL questions. Marks
allocation for each part of the questions is indicated in the questions. The total marks
of this assignment will be scaled to 15% of the total coursework mark of this subject.
2. Students are required to work in group of TWO (2). The members of a group MUST
be from the same lecture group/section.
3. Each student MUST submit his/her own assignment report INDIVIDUALLY. The
assignment reports MUST NOT be identical to any others even for the members of
the same group.
4. Students MUST type their solutions/reports and print them out for submission.
Untidy works and submission will be penalized at the instructors discretion. Start
each question on a fresh page. Include the cover page in the appendix. Staple all pages
securely.
5. Any form of PLAGIARISM identified will render the student to be penalized to
ZERO (0) marks.
6. The deadline to submit the assignment report is on (or) before 10 JANUARY 2014
(Friday), 5.00 p.m. Students may submit their works earlier than the stipulated
deadline. However, late submission will be automatically penalized to ZERO (0)
marks.
7. The submission will be time-stamped with official chop and signature of the receiving
instructor.

Question 1
Consider a Linear Time Invariant system (LTI) with frequency response

s O < O
O s O

| | , 1
) (
0
, 0
H

[2 mark]
(a) Find the impulse response for above response.

(b) Find the output of the linear invariant (LTI) system. Assume
0

signal is obtained by sampling x
a
(t) = 2 cos (50t) + 3 sin (150 + 6) with a sampling
frequency 8 KHz..

(c) If the sampling frequency is 16 KHz and all the other parameters are the same as (b),
nd the output of the system.

Question 2

transform of x
s

domain signals.

(a) X

(b) If T = 2.5 ms, plot X

(c) If T = 5 ms, plot X

(d) If T = 8 ms, plot X
s

(e) In order to avoid aliasing, what is the maximum value of T ?

Question 3

Consider the system shown in the following figure.

Figure 3-1

(a) Find the transfer function in z-domain.
(b) Find the difference equation.
(c) Plot the direct-form II representation.
[3 marks]
Question 4

FIR filters are digital filters with finite impulse response, which is known as non-recursive
digital filters as they do not have the feedback (a recursive part of a filter), even though
recursive algorithms can be used for FIR filter realization. The transfer function of FIR filter
approaches the ideal as the filter order increases, thus increasing the complexity and amount
of time needed for processing input samples of a signal being filtered. According to above
mentioned, design an 11-point FIR band-pass filter, with the sampling frequency 44 KHz,
and the pass band is from 2 KHz to 4 KHz.

(a) If rectangular window is used, write down the coefficients, and plot with Matlab the
amplitude and phase response.
(b) If the Hamming window is used, write down the coefficients, and plot with Matlab the
amplitude and phase response.
[4 marks]

Question 5

The purpose of a filter is to accept certain type of signals and reject others. A filter can be
characterized by its frequency response: low pass, high pass, band stop, band pass. For a low
pass filter, the detail frequency response characteristics are shown in Figure Q5. A low pass
filter is a circuit whose amplitude (magnitude) function decreases as increases, that is, the
circuit passes low frequencies (relatively large amplitudes at the output) and rejects high
frequencies (relatively small amplitudes at the output). Using Matlab, designs a 4th order low
pass butter worth IIR filter. The sampling frequency is 24 KHz, and the cutoff frequency is 2
KHz. Plot with Matlab the amplitude and phase response.
