Guantanamo Bay

By: Leslie Medina

What is Guantanamo Bay?
Its a United States Military Prison
The prison was made to keep extraordinarily
dangerous prisoners(said by Secretary of Defense
Donald H. Rumsfeld)
The prison is mainly there to prosecute prisoners for
war crimes
People captured from the War on terror were sent there
most of them being from Afghanistan, Iraq, the Horn of
Africa, and Southeast Asia
Where is it Located?
Guantanamo Bay is located in Cuba

Background about Guantanamo
Bay
Since its opening it has held over 750 detainees
The U.S. has been leasing where the base is from Cuba
since 1903
The lease costs the U.S. $4,085.00 a year

Controversy About Guantanamo
Bay
Many of the prisoners are kept there without having a
fair trial
Because it isnt located in the US the prisoners arent
given the rights other people are
Prisoners have reported abuse and torture

Article Summary
Since Obama became president he has wanted to close Guantanamo Bay
In his plan he has said that prisoners who are too difficult to prosecute but
too dangerous to be released would be held somewhere else
Obama wants congress to lift the Statutory Ban so that prisoners could be
brought to the U.S.

The Problem
If brought to the U.S. there are chances that the
detainees would have to be released because the laws
of war no longer permit the U.S. to be able to keep them
in prison
The problem then would be that the detainees would
stay in the U.S. and not being able to return to their
home country because their government would torture
them
Obamas solution is to send them to another country
but, it would be unlikely that a country would be willing
to take them
Connection to Class
The U.S. has spent $5 billion since 2002 when it started
to accept prisoners
It costs the federal government $2.7 million per prisoner
per year
The government obtains its money from tax revenue in
2014 the government is said to project $3 trillion
dollars(Federal Budget 101 Packet)

Connection to Class
The U.S. is estimated to spend $415.8 million on the
prisoners in 2014
In my opinion this is the money that Americans are
paying that should be used on other programs that are
more important
I believe that instead of using the money to keep
prisoners unfairly the money should be used on on
other programs such as: education, health, or the
national debt
