STRUCTURAL DESIGN CERTIFICATE Solar Panel Mounting System

STA CONSULTING ENGINEERS, confirms that the structural design of the listed aspects of this
system comply with the relevant provisions of the applicable Australian building codes and standards
listed below and with accepted engineering practices and principles.

The project details are as described below:

Client: Blue Sun Group
Job no: CE-109184-G
Project Description: Solar Panel Mounting System (Commercial/Industrial Buildings)
Period of validity: 1 year from 09/01/2012

ITEMS COVERED BY CERTIFICATE
-Blue Sun Group Solar Panel Mounting System including Components; (Mounting Rails(56mm high),
Mid Clamps, End Clamps, L-Feet, Tile Brackets, Joiners, Tilt legs, Bolts and nuts)-refer drawings
referenced below

The abovementioned system and components, if installed reasonably in accordance with the
documentation provided to STA Consulting Engineers by Blue Sun Group, shall be capable of
providing a resistance greater than the design combination of actions as described by AS/NZ
1170.0:2002 considering the following loads:

Permanent Actions Self Weight of Solar Panels (Max weight 30kg per panel),
Imposed Actions Wind loads Regions A, B, C, TC2, Building heights up to 20m (As per AS1170.2)

The structural resistance of the system and components have been determined in accordance with
the following standards:

-AS 1170.0:2002 General Principles
-AS 1170.1:2002 Permanent, Imposed and other Actions
-AS 4100:1998 Steel Structures
-AS 1720.1 Timber Structures
-AS/NZS 4600:200 Cold Formed Steel Structures
-AS/NZS 1664.2:1997 Aluminium Structures, Part 2: Allowable Stress Design
-AS1684:2006 Residential Timber Framed Construction

Minimum Timber Batten requirement is MGP10, 35mm thick for Region A & B. Minimum
Timber Batten requirement is MGP10, 45mm thick for Region C. Screws must have full
depth embedment.
Ensure Battens are fixed to Trusses/rafters as per AS1684 Residential Timber Framed
Construction
*Minimum Steel batten/purlin size is greater than 1.2mm thick. If battens are between 0.55
BMT and 1.2 BMT fixings are to be doubled up or ensure minimum tiedown of 1.9KN
(Ultimate limit state) per fixing.

The resulting installation requirements for a TILE ROOF based on above Standards and loading is as
follows;
Tile brackets to be fixed at maximum 600c/c
Tile brackets to be fixed directly to timber rafters/trusses(not battens) with min 2/Type 17 -
12g screws. Min embedment into timber of 35mm
Tile brackets to be fixed directly to steel rafters/trusses with min 2/M6 Roof Zips.
Tile brackets are to be used only up to wind classification Regions A & B

DESIGN ASSUMPTIONS/LIMITATIONS
Maximum size of solar panels is 1580x1066mm and 1650x992mm
Roof Pitch must be between 10deg and 35 deg. Tilt frame can be used between 0deg to
10deg. If outside this range Blue Sun Group is to be contacted to provide design.
Building height is limited to 20m high
Maximum Mounting Rail overhang past fixing points at each end is 300mm
Solar Mounting system not to be mounted on roof within 1200mm of the roof edge or ridge
Installation is the responsibility of the installer. If in doubt Blue Sun Group is to be contacted
for clarification.
Deflections of rail have not been considered in this design. If deflection is critical for
installation Blue Sun Group is to be contacted for verification of suitable fixing spacings.
Tilt frame installation to have maximum height of tilt leg of 600mm (Max 900 for Region A)
Spanning Capabilities and recommended overhangs of panels to be provided by panel
manufacturer. Panels are not included in this certification.
