Rabbis Message
The Breadth of Israel
A Long-Distance Relationship. . . Israelis and American Jews have a long-distance rela-
tionship. But as you know, sometimes long-distance relationships can be a bit tricky.
Having spent significant time in Israel over the past thirty-five years, it is clear to me that
my involvement, comfort level, knowledge, and stake in what goes on there, all have inten-
sified a thousand fold as a result of my time there. Some say that familiarity breeds con-
tempt. With Israel I would say instead that familiarity leads to enhanced understanding,
connection, concern, and perhaps, even love; and yes, sometimes frustration as well, but it
is frustration out of love. At the very least, it is our hope for enhanced understanding that
has motivated us to arrange a congregational tour next spring that will carry us over the
"breadth of Israel" together.

The Breadth of Israel. . . The State of Israel is approximately the size of New Jersey - not exactly a massive
land area. Nevertheless, there are dramatic differences between the regions within Israel in topography, land
fertility, water proximity, population distribution, and cultural outlook. No matter where one might travel,
however, one will find beauty, fascination, history, and contemporary reality. Next year, May 2-15, 2015,
our congregation will embark upon an extraordinary journey to discover the breadth of Israel. Of course we
could never take in all that is there in two short weeks. Yet, we will be traveling to all four quadrants of the
country, and will get a taste, at least, of the breathtaking expanse that is Israel. We will visit areas of deep his-
toric and religious significance and fascinating geological wonders, and will immerse ourselves into the mod-
ern, sophisticated, exciting, and yes, at times tumultuous nation that Israel is. Perhaps among the most mean-
ingful opportunities for us will be our visits with Israels people - Jews, Christians, Arabs, representatives of
the Palestinian community, workers for intergroup understanding, brilliant scholars and idealistic students.

Keshet. . . The word keshet means rainbow. It is also the name of the tour company with whom we will be
traveling: Keshet: the Center for Educational Tourism in Israel. It is a perfect name for the company, be-
cause it is a group of educators in the best sense of the word. Steve and I have gotten to know them over the
years because they handle the tiyyulim (day trips) for the Shalom Hartman Institute. We have been extremely
impressed with the high level of their work, both in organization and sophistication. They coordinated the trip
that Steve and I led last year for our minister friends, and did a superlative job. My friend and colleague,
Rabbi Lester Bronstein, Rabbi of Bet Am Shalom of White Plains and VP of the New York Board of Rabbis,
offers this observation: The tour plan with Keshet is not an itinerary, it's a curriculum. No stop is a "site."
Rather, every destination is seen as an opportunity to understand. . . (The staff members) treat us not as cli-
ents but as hevre. They involve themselves with us as Jews on a search for the lessons Israel has to teach us.
After such a personal, caring, engaging experience for myself, my family, and my congregation, I cannot
imagine traveling in Israel with any group but Keshet.... Thank you Les. My sentiments exactly.

Our travels. . . The leadership of Keshet has been working closely with me, and with Bob Newhouser and
Mike Gliken of our Adult Ed Committee, to put together a journey of discovery and enjoyment, learning and
exchange of ideas, deep meaning and inspiration. I hope you will consider joining us for this adventure as we
travel through Israel - our land. What I look forward to the most is the personal relationships that will deepen
between us as we experience these two weeks together. I assure you, it will be a life-altering experience. The
land package is $3,275 (based on double occupancy), and gratuities, an additional $165. When the airlines re-

Every time I travel to Israel my relationship with it deepens, as well as my understanding of myself as an
American Jew. So, at our opening dinner in Tel Aviv I look forward to our raising our glasses with the toast:
B'ruchim Haba'im L'Yisrael -- Welcome to Israel!

The Breadth of Israel
(Continued from page 2)
The evening of April 12th was very special for me as I got to emcee the Aztec Two-Step concert here at Union
Temple. As you probably know the concert was collaboration between our Temple and First Acoustics, a con-
cert series founded by my friend Coco Wilde. It was a thrill to work with Coco to bring the finest in contempo-
rary folk music to Union Temple. I have seen Aztec Two-Step perform a number of times and I can say that they
were at their best with us. I am very grateful to our congregation for supporting this event. The turnout was ex-
cellent and the band members told me they enjoyed being with us. I expect that they made some new fans.
Thank you to our congregants who volunteered to work at the concert. We could not have done this without
you: Dennies Gajadhar, Michael Glicken Arlene Greendlinger, Adam Sarkozy, Howard Simka, Linda Simka,
and Ellen Vanacore.
Thank you to John Golomb and his crew for the set up work they did to prepare for the show.
Thank you to Ellen Kolikoff for putting together the beautifully designed program.
Thank you to our President Bea Hanks for her help and support and for being a sounding board for my ideas.
Thank you to the Sponsors who so generously supported the concert:
And a very special thank you to the Anonymous Donor who has very generously offered a matching grant.

Putting the L in LGBT, UT June movie night:
Aime & Jaguar
Wednesday, June 18, 2014
Refreshments: 7 pm
Screening: 7:15 - 9:30 pm, 3
rd
Floor
Aime & Jaguar was made in 1998 and is in German with English subtitles. Based on a true story
about two women who fall in love in Germany during WWII in 1943 Berlin.
Lilly (aka Aime) is a married woman, mother of four sons, and an exemplar of
Nazi motherhood. For her, this affair will be the most decisive experience of her
life. For the other woman, Felice (aka Jaguar) a Jewess and member of the under-
ground, their love fuels her with the hope that she will survive.
A half-century later, Lilly Wust told her incredible story to writer Erica Fischer, and
the book, Aime & Jaguar, first published in 1994 immediately became a bestsel-
ler and has since been translated into eleven languages. Max Frberbck's debut
film, based on Fischer's book, is the true story of this extraordinary relationship.
The film was nominated for a 1999 Golden Globe Award and was Germany's submission for the
Best Foreign Language Film Oscar. Both actresses received Silver Bears at the 1999 Berlin Interna-
tional Film Festival for their portrayals of "Aime" and "Jaguar".
This is a program not to be missed!
Please make sure to RSVP the Temple office uniontemple@uniontemple.org to secure your first
come, first served attendance (no charge).
A word of thanks from Rabbi Goodman....
Earlier this spring I got up one Shabbat morning and went into the temple, as I do every Shabbat morning. I went up to the fourth floor to
meet our Hevre, we had our bagels and coffee, and continued our studies of the Book of Deuteronomy, as we have this whole year. I
went downstairs to the Service, put on my tallit (that morning it was my "Women of the Wall" tallit - the pink one), and walked to the
front of the room as usual. Then, I looked up, and there you were. One, after the other, after the other, I saw the women of our congre-
gation, sitting there in tallitot. And men too. It was "Yom Hatallit." So now, of course, I knew there had been -- a plan! I was so gratified
and delighted, I can hardly describe it. Of course, the minhag of our congregation has always been that the wearing of kippot and tallitot
was optional. And that is still the case. But we now have a tallit stand with several tallitot in the back of the room for morning services,
should anyone want to wear one. And to see so many women in their tallitot was particularly meaningful. As you know, I, along with
some of you, have been part of the fight for years in Jerusalem, to win the right for women to wear tallitot at the Western Wall. So to be
in my own congregation, among all my friends, with so many tallitot, was particularly wonderful.
I could say "dayeinu." But then, there was more! A delicious luncheon. Wonderful words spoken from the heart by several of you
whom I have known and loved for a very long time now. And, a videotaped greeting from our Honorary President, Hortense Hurwitz.
Dayeinu? No - not yet! The pice de resistance - your incredibly kind and generous collective gift to the Jewish National Fund of a garden
of 120 trees to be planted in Israel in my name and the name of our temple.
And what sparked this day of surprise? The end of my term as President of the New York Board of Rabbis. What a wonderful tribute.
You may recall that we say "Shehecheyanu" at the beginning of our holidays - like at the beginning of Passover week - but not at the end.
It's a mitzvah to begin the holiday, but not to end it. But in life, while we often celebrate beginnings, we also need to mark completions
as well. And this was a formidable completion, to be sure. I so much appreciate your support and participation in these two years of my
presidency of this organization. It has meant a great deal to me to hold the office, and an even greater deal to have your support.
I don't know yet if we will get to see the actual garden when we travel to Israel next year. But we will be able to see the official record of
it in the JNF office in Jerusalem if we go in there. Meanwhile, however, I speak for Stephen and Philip as well, as I offer you my most
heartfelt thanks.

Sisterhood
Between Two Eternities
What would you do if you learned that the person you love more than life itself was destined to
die soonand he or she asked you to help ease the inevitable end? Would you do it? Could you
do it? Join Sisterhood on Sunday, June 1st, at 10 AM, as we discuss BETWEEN TWO ETERNI-
TIES by Barbara Brett, a novel that explores that heart-rending question. Full disclosure: I'm the
author of this love story of a Jewish marriage, which is set right here in Brooklyn, and I'd love to
hear your views. Originally published by Avon to a rave review in Publishers Weekly, the novel
has recently been re-issued as an e-book and paperback and is available on-line. Haven't read the
book? Not to worry. You are sure to have a lot to add once the discussion gets going.

It's our last program of the season, and we'll be celebrating Rosh Chodesh Sivan, the month that brings us the
joyful holiday Shavout, with a sumptuous brunch and an exciting raffle. We'll also be holding a brief election
and asking for your ideas for future programs. We hope that you'll have lots of suggestions and that you will
want to submit your name or nominate someone as an officer or member of the board. Not yet a member of
Sisterhood? Not a problem. You can join on the spot or wait for the Sisterhood bill, which will be mailed out
this month. Just thinkfor only $40 you can be part of our warm circle of friendship and at the same time per-
form the mitzvah of bringing hope and help where they are needed by adding your voice, your heart, and your
hands to ours as together we reach out to help our temple, our community, and our world.

Sisterhood wishes everyone a happy summer. You can add to the pleasures of the long, lazy days of July and
August by reading THE SISTERS WEISS by Naomi Ragen. At our first program in the fall we'll be discussing
this intriguing novel about two sisters who flee from their Chassidic family. See you then!

As the school year drew to a close we turned our attention to our
annual Spring Benefit and auction. Krista Bogetich, the Preschool
Administrator headed up the committee and directed the efforts. We
had an amazing parent committee who volunteered their services,
their ideas, a lot of their personal time, in addition to donating wine,
video and photography, and performers.
The theme of this year's event was "Your Show of Shows", a retro
event in the spirit of the late fifties and early sixties. Our own
Stephen Dima served as the master of ceremonies. The evening's
entertainment included, a juggler, two comics, and a musical act, as
well as the "Vintage DJ", Jonathan Jacobs (also a preschool parent).
The event was held in the big room on Saturday night, May 17. Par-
ents enjoyed food provided by Aaron Unger former preschool par-
ent and owner of "Night Kitchen Catering".
Among the highlights of the live auction, which was held at the gala, were tickets to the Tonight Show with
Jimmy Fallon, four loge tickets to a Nets game, theatre tickets to "Mothers and Sons", and weekends at vaca-
tion homes in Amagansett and in Delhi, New York, in the Catskills.
The high point of the live auction were the five items created and contributed by our five classes. There were
two art canvases; the drop cloths used to cover the art table over the course of the school year, contributed by
the Chickadees (twos), and the Sparrows (threes). The result was a Jackson Pollock-like picture. We also auc-
tioned off a beautiful platter with a picture of a tree, contributed by the Robins (old twos and young threes
class). The leaves of the tree were the fingerprints of the children in the class. The Puffin (four year olds) con-
tributed their class mascot, a cuddly stuffed puffin. The class adopted a real puffin as a special class project.
They also purchased a stuffed animal puffin, who they named Feather. Feather would visit a different student's
home each weekend. He was sent home with a log. Each child would spend a weekend doing fun things with
Feather and record what they did in the log along with photos which helped document the weekend's events.
The highest bidder won Feather and the log. The Puffins also donated beautiful body cut-outs that were part of
an artist study. The cut-outs were done in the style of Keith Haring. The winning bidder won their child's cut-
out mounted on foam core. The Hummingbirds class (four year olds) contributed a beautiful framed series of
block prints.
The evening was a huge success and a
whole lot of fun. Many thanks to every-
one who helped plan and all who partici-
pated in this event. Most of all thanks to
Krista whose tireless work and amazing
energy made this such a memorable
event.
Have a great summer.
