Teaching Students
How Teir Brains Work
Sonja Franke, grade 4/5 teacher at JV Humphries School,
Kaslo, has been inspired by the Mind Up program, a prov-
incially sanctioned program that helps students with their
own personal resiliency. Mind Up teaches students about
how their brain works. It also teaches students ways to
calm themselves down, to better understand their own
emotions and to create a stronger link between their
body and their mind. Tis is what is called Mindfulness.
It involves connecting and anchoring to your own breath,
thereby cultivating a calm and alert mental state. Te result
is that the best conditions for learning and self-regulation
are achieved.
Ms. Franke has presented this program to students from
grade one to grade eight. Please call her at school, 250-353-
2227 if you want more information about her program.

Laura Landsberg At Te Langham
Laura Landsberg celebrates her new recording, A Simple
Twist, in concert at the Langham Teatre on Tuesday, June
10 at 7:30 pm. Laura is accompanied by a group featuring
the great talents of Tom Neville on violin, Miles Black on
piano, Paul Landsberg on guitar, Doug Stephenson on bass
and Tony Ferraro on drums. Landsbergs voice leads the
way, taking us on a magical musical adventure.
Take one part rock n roll, one part jazz, and one part
country, shake it up with a gorgeous and dynamic voice
and call it A Simple Twist. Tis new recording from
Laura Landsberg sees her changing up tunes by artists
like Bob Dylan, CCR and Van Morrison.
Laura leads a busy life as a mother to six children, plus
shes a teacher and a jazz singer. She has been performing
her unique blend of jazz, blues, and gospel music
throughout North America for over twenty years. As
well as leading her own groups, she has performed with
Chucho Valdez, Te Brubeck Brothers, Neil Swainson,
Hugh Fraser and VEJI, and the Spokane Jazz Orchestra.
Although Laura has been described as, A remarkably
fresh and unpretentious singer (Spokesman Review),
perhaps Paul Grant (CBC Hot Air), put it best when he
stated, With so many singers trying to sound like some-
one else, its a treat to hear Laura Landsbergs fresh and
original voiceshes a natural.
James Lamb, singer-songwriter from Nelson, will begin
the evening with a short set.
Tickets are $18 and are available at Sunnyside Naturals,
Willow Home Gallery and at the door.

Slocan Ramblers At Te Langham
Finger pickin good times await everyone who comes
out to see the Slocan Ramblers at the Langham in Kaslo on
Sunday, June 22. Te band started turning heads in early
2009 while playing casual gigs on the Toronto roots scene.
With a weekly lo-
cal pub gig becoming
a staple of the citys
thriving acoustic music
scene, the Slocans quick-
ly earned a reputation
throughout Canada for
their energetic live per-
formances, impressive
musicianship and un-
canny ability to convert
anyone who stands in
their path into a fan.
Some career highlights
include standing ova-
tions at the legendary
Mariposa Folk Festival,
an opening show for
Steve Martin on the main
stage at Toronto Jazz
Fest, and tours across
Canada. Te raw inten-
sity and drive forged in
their years playing the
bar scene continues to
set them apart. With
their debut album Shaking Down the Acorns receiving
wide acclaim (Sing Out! Magazine, Huf ngton Post etc)
and a sophomore release in the works, this fearless four
piece is sure to keep garnering attention beyond the trad-
itional bluegrass fan base.
Te Slocans are:
Frank Evans, banjo,
Adrian Gross,
mandolin, Darryl
Poulsen, guitar and
Alastair Whitehead,
bass (another Kaslo
kid making great
music!)
A whole new gen-
eration of bluegrass
is being born along
with a whole new
generation of fans.
Make sure to mark
your calendar, Sun-
day June 22 at 7 pm
at the Langham.
Tickets $15 at

Nelson Students Promote
Pollution Awareness
Columbia Basin Trusts Know Your Watershed Pro-
gram and Friends of Kootenay Lake teamed up with
Nelson youth to paint yellow fsh by storm drains in the
Rosemont area. Claire de la Salle from Friends of Koo-
tenay Lake said By preventing pollution from entering
storm drains students are helping to keep Kootenay
Lake healthy. Many people dont know that the storm
drain system empties directly into the lake. Painting
yellow fsh by storm drains is done across the country
and can really have a positive impact to reduce pollut-
ants entering our waterways.
Te Trafalgar Leadership class helped to organize the
event with support from teacher Kelly Anast and Mon-
ica Nissen, from Know Your Watershed. Te goal was to
teach fellow students about the importance of keeping
only rain in the drain. In total, there were 67 students
from Trafalgar, South Nelson, and Rosemont schools,
5 teachers, and 11 volunteers, a total of 83 people who
painted 99 storm drains.
Te organizers wish to thank the Columbia Basin Trust
and all the hard working students and volunteers for mak-
ing this day possible!

Got Bats?
Want to learn more about the unique world of bats?
Do you want free mosquito control? Whether you want
to promote bats in your garden or need advice to safely
evict them from a building, the Kootenay Community Bat
Project can help.
Te KCBP provides educational programs on bats,
works with landowners who have bats in buildings and
promote the annual bat count to monitor bat populations.
Of the sixteen species of bats in BC, over half are red
or blue-listed, meaning that their populations are declin-
ing and they could become endangered. Tere are many
threats to these amazing creatures of the night including
habitat loss, intentional extermination (which is illegal
under the BC Wildlife Act), wind farm development,
and most recently, White Nose Syndrome which is a
devastating introduced fungus that has already killed ap-
proximately 6 million bats in North America. Basically,
bats need all the help they can get.
Funded by the Columbia Basin Trust, the KCBP seeks
information from the public on where bats roost, pro-
vides site visits and advice to residents with bats in build-
ings, and requests help from the public to act as Citizen
Scientists to help count bat populations. A local biologist
can visit your property to assess your bat situation, iden-
tify the bat species and provide you with information on
safe evictions and bat-houses.
One of the focuses this year is on the BC Bat Count
where residents are encouraged to count bats leaving
a roost site on their property for four nights in order to
monitor populations. Tis long-term monitoring infor-
mation is very valuable since there is very little known
about local bat species and their population numbers.
If you have bats living in your buildings, would like to
join the BC Bat Count, or need information on how to
build a bat-house visit www.kootenaybats.com or call
1-855-9BC-BATS, (1-855-922-2287).

Leocadio Juracn
Kaslos Amnesty International group is pleased to spon-
sor an evening with Leocadio Juracn at the home of Dan
Miles and Shelley Stickel-Miles on Friday, June 13 at 7:30
pm. Leocadio Juracn is the internationally acclaimed
co-ordinator of Campesino Committee of the Highlands
(CCDA) in Guatemala. Tis organization has been work-
ing for decades to address the immediate needs of water
and land protection, economic development and educa-
tion within the rural Mayan communities. As well it sup-
ports the broader struggle for social justice, land reform,
and labour struggles with plantation owners. Te CCDA
funds this work through the production and export of
Cafe Justicia, a gourmet cofee produced by cooperatives
and individual farmers belonging to the organization.
Various threats on the life of Leocadio and his family
forced them into temporary exile in Canada in 2010. Leo-
cadio is the elected representative of CCDA in the Central
American campesino coalition.
During the day on Friday, Leocadio will be participat-
ing in the BC Rural Communities Summit in Kaslo. Te
