Carleen Troup - Lesson Planning Template for INSYS 297A/101

Learning Goal: Students will learn about numbers and simple addition. Students will be
able to correctly identify and neatly color a ladybug. Students will be able to identify the
numbers 1-6 that appear on a standard die. After rolling the die and identifying the
number, students will be able to put the correct number of dots on the ladybug. They will
also be able to complete simple addition problems on their own, by using the number of
dots on each wing, getting a sum of the total number of dots.

Learning Objectives: I will first demonstrate the project by having the ladybug projected
onto a screen using an overhead. I will give the students an example of how they should
do it and then have them complete it for themselves. I will also go over addition facts and
a few simple problems before allowing the students to start their project. After receiving
a ladybug template, students will first color each wing of the ladybug red. They will then
roll the first die, read the number that appears, and put the corresponding number of black
dots on the left wing. The students will repeat the process for the right wing. Then,
underneath the picture of the ladybug, the student will write the number sentence that
represents the addition of the number of dots on each side of the wing. The student will
perform the addition problem and write down the sum on the piece of paper. When the
student is finished with his/her project, the teacher will check to see if the math problem
was completed correctly. If it is correct, the student will receive a sticker. If not, the
teacher will help the student until he/she gets it right, and then give the sticker to the
student. For extra practice, I will provide each student with a worksheet with some simple
addition problems to take home and complete as homework. I will also explain to them
why addition is important in their everyday lives using real world examples.

Audience: 20 Kindergarten students ages 5-6.

12:00-12:10 Teacher should clap
three times to get
students attention and
tell them to head to their
seats. Teacher should
pass out a printed out
picture of the ladybug, a
black stamper, two die,
and a red marker to each
student. The teacher will
demonstrate how to
complete the project
using an overhead and
explain to the students
how to do it. Teacher
will also make sure
students remember their
simple math facts and
go over addition
problems as a class.
- 20 ladybug
pictures printed
onto paper.
- 20 black
stampers.
- 40 die.
- 20 red markers.
- Overhead
machine.
- Transparency of
the ladybug.

12:10-12:13 Using the marker that
the students should
already have, they will
color each wing of the
ladybug red.
- Red maker

already have
both)

12:13-12:16 Students should roll the
first die and stamp the
corresponding number
of dots onto the left
wing. They should
repeat the process for
the right wing. I will
monitor the childrens
progress for this stage
and help them along if
they seem to be lost.

12:16-12:20 Students should record
the math sentence under
the picture of the
ladybug. They should
take the number of dots
on the left wing, write it
down, put a plus sign,

add the numbers and
record the sum. Teacher

students performance
during this stage, giving
them helpful hints along

12:20-12:25 Once a student is
finished with his/her
project, he/she will raise
his/her hand. The
teacher will check each
students work. If they
completed the task
correctly, they receive a
sticker. If not, teacher
will re-direct and help
the student complete the
project correctly, and
then receive a sticker.
- 20 stickers
Enhancing retention
and transfer

12:25-12:30 Teacher should explain
to the students how this
fun activity helped them
with their math facts,
addition, numbers, and
coloring. The teacher
should also explain how
math and addition could
be related to the
students real lives using
real world examples.
The teacher could then
assign a worksheet with
more simple addition
problems for the
children to take home
and complete on their
own.
