Biology EOC Short Answer Section At a Glance

Application Question Expectations
Application Question Type What Theyre Looking For
Criteria and Constraint
1. Identifying two constraints other than cost
And
2. Describing how each constraint is a limitation.

Redesign
The response explains how the system would be
redesigned using the materials listed and any of the
original materials by:
1. Describing the redesign of the original system.
AND
2. Explaining how the redesign would solve the
problem better than the original system.

Scientific Design Process
1. Research the Problem: Information needed
to solve the problem is described or pertinent
questions are given
2. Scientific Research: Related scientific
information OR how to scientifically collect related
data is described
Test Solution
1.The response describes a plan for testing whether
solution 1 or solution 2 is more effective for
solving the problem by describing:
A method for testing each option

2.AND The data to be collected to determine
whether solution 1 or solution 2 is more effective
for solving the problem.

Biology EOC Short Response Inquiry Items Expectations
Inquiry Item: Conclusion
Whats Asked Answer the experimental question.
Include supporting data from the Manipulated
(Independent) Variable vs. Responding (Dependent)
Variable table.
Explain how these data support your conclusion.
Provide a scientific explanation for the trend in the data.
What They Expect in an
Answer
1. Conclusive statement correctly answers the experimental question
(or correctly states whether the hypothesis/prediction was correct):
As the manipulated variable increased, the responding variable
increased. (1 pt)
2. Supporting data should at least be over the entire range of the
conditions investigated. Thus the minimum reported data are the
lowest and highest conditions of the manipulated variable for
quantitative data (responding variable when the manipulated variable
information is descriptive).
Ex: Supporting data for lowest condition and supporting data for
highest condition (2 pts)
3. Explanatory language, separate from the conclusive statement, is
used to connect or compare the supporting data to the conclusive
statement: So changing the manipulated variable by X caused the
responding variable to increase/decrease by Y. (1 pt)
Inquiry Item: New Procedure
What They Ask Plan a controlled experiment to answer the question in the box.
You may use any materials and equipment in your procedure.
Be sure your procedure includes:
logical steps to do the experiment
two controlled (kept the same) variables
one manipulated (independent) variable
one responding (dependent) variable
how often measurements should be taken and recorded
What They Expect Controlled Variables: At least two controlled variable are identified or
implied in the procedure or the materials list (e.g., give examples).
Manipulated Variable: Only one manipulated variable (state variable from
question) is identified or implied in the procedure or data table (if given).
The manipulated variable must have at least three conditions to be credited
Responding Variable: The responding variable (state variable from
question) is identified or implied in the procedure or data table (if given).
Record Measurements: The procedure states or implies measurements are
recorded periodically or gives a data table.

Trials are Repeated: More than one trial for all conditions is planned, or
implied in a data table, to measure the responding variable.
Experimental Control Conditions: The procedure includes an additional
setup in which the manipulated variable is not changed and the responding
variable is measured for each condition in the experimental setup(s) (e.g.,
give example).
Writing Note: This attribute is only credited for complicated investigations in
which an experimental control condition is appropriate.
Extra Validity Measure: The procedure includes a validity measure not
included in the scenario experiment (e.g., more controlled variables, better
measuring technique, increased range of conditions, control for sample bias).
Logical Steps: The steps of the procedure are detailed enough to repeat the
procedure effectively (examples of illogical steps: no ending time indicated;
states Set up as diagrammed, but diagram is inadequate; recording vague
data or results).
Inquiry Item: New Field Study
What They Ask Plan a field study to answer the question in the box. You may use any
materials and equipment in your procedure.
Be sure your procedure includes:
logical steps to do the field study
conditions to be compared
data to be collected
method for collecting data
how often measurements should be taken and recorded
environmental conditions to be recorded
What They Expect Method for Collecting Data (Controlled Variable): The procedure states
or implies a consistent sampling strategy or technique (e.g., keep the
sampling area the same, count at the same time every day).
Conditions to be Compared (Manipulated/independent variable): Only
one independent variable (manipulated variable) is identified or implied in
the procedure or data table (if given). The independent variable must have at
least three conditions to be credited.
Data to be Collected (Responding/dependent variable): The data collected
to answer the experimental question (dependent/responding variable) is
identified or implied in the procedure or data table (if given).
Record Measurements: The procedure states or implies measurements are
recorded.
Attribute Notes:1.If artificial data for the responding variable is given, this
attribute cannot be credited. 2.The phrase take measurement or to count
cannot be used to mean recorded systematically.
Observations are Repeated: More than one observation for all conditions is

planned, or implied in a data table, (e.g. Go to each location 2 times, sample
multiple regions in the same area.)
