Council Report
June 3, 2014
To: Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Council
From: Jason Stilwell, City Administrator
Submitted by: Sharon Friedrichsen, Public Services Director
Subject: Receive and file summary of Forest Theatre workshop
Recommendation(s): Receive and file summary of direction given to staff related to the Forest
Theatre workshop.
Executive Summary: City Council held a workshop related to the closure of the Forest Theatre
on May 5, 2014. The primary purpose of the workshop was to provide
direction to staff on whether any substantial redesign of the Theatre,
such as the development of a master plan, should be considered as part
of the effort to reopen the Theatre. Council confirmed that staff should
focus only on addressing the key life-safety issues needed to open the
Theatre as expeditiously as possible and the Theatre's design, layout and
structures should remain fundamentally the same as it currently exists.
Analysis/Discussion: Council confirmed the objective is to make the life and safety and
accessibility improvements needed to reopen the Theatre as quickly as
possible. Phasing of elements should be considered as needed such as
identifying the immediate items to correct now and then working on
additional items to address any additional deficiency after the users
groups' season ends in October.
